Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday Introduce
Looking for a convenient "camping near me" option in the Fort McCoy area? Consider the Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday, located at 15991 NE 243rd Place Rd, Fort McCoy, FL 32134, USA. As part of the well-known KOA (Kampgrounds of America) network, this location aims to provide a range of camping experiences for local users. However, based on initial customer feedback, it's essential to approach this introduction with an objective perspective, highlighting both potential positives and reported negatives to help you make an informed decision.
Location and Environment:
Situated in Fort McCoy, Florida, the Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday benefits from its proximity to the natural attractions of the region, most notably Lake Oklawaha. Lake Oklawaha is a significant body of water in north-central Florida, known for its recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The campground's location "Right on a river!" as mentioned in one review, suggests potential waterfront access, enhancing the natural appeal for campers. The environment around Lake Oklawaha typically features a mix of forests, wetlands, and open water, providing a diverse backdrop for outdoor activities. For local users seeking "camping near me" with access to water-based recreation and the natural beauty of the Lake Oklawaha area, this KOA could offer an appealing setting. However, one review also suggests a strong presence of ATV enthusiasts, which might influence the overall atmosphere and noise levels depending on your preferences.
Services and Amenities:
As a KOA Holiday campground, Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA likely offers a range of services and amenities catering to different types of campers. One positive review highlights "super clean showers and bathrooms" and a "big recreational building with a kids corner and two pull tables," along with a "big screen tv to watch what you want and a lot of sitting space." This suggests the presence of well-maintained communal facilities and a recreational area for guest use. The mention of a "dog walking area" is also a significant amenity for pet owners. However, a contrasting review paints a less favorable picture, mentioning issues like "dog crap all over a campsite" and a "broken picnic table," which could indicate inconsistencies in site maintenance. To get a clear understanding of the services offered, local users should contact the campground directly at (352) 546-5500 or +1 352-546-5500. Inquire about the types of campsites available (RV, tent, cabin), hookups (water, electricity, sewer), laundry facilities, Wi-Fi availability, and any other amenities that are important for your stay. Understanding the full scope of services and the condition of the facilities is crucial for a comfortable camping experience.
Features and Unique Aspects:
One of the key features highlighted in the reviews is the apparent popularity of ATV riding at or near the campground. One reviewer explicitly states, "if you don't have an ATV then you don't belong here," suggesting a strong ATV culture within the campground community. This could be a major draw for local users who are ATV enthusiasts looking for "camping near me" with direct access to riding trails. However, it also implies that the atmosphere might be geared towards this activity, potentially leading to noise and traffic that might not appeal to all campers seeking a more traditional and quiet camping experience. The mention of being "Right on a river!" in a positive review suggests waterfront access, which could be a unique and desirable feature for fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the scenery. The presence of a recreational building with amenities like a kids' corner and pool tables indicates an effort to provide entertainment and social spaces for guests. Local users should consider whether the ATV-centric environment aligns with their camping preferences and inquire about the extent of waterfront access and other recreational facilities.
Promotional Information:
The provided information does not include any specific promotional details for the Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday. As a KOA campground, they may have national or regional promotions available. Local users should check the official KOA website or contact the Fort McCoy location directly to inquire about any special offers, discounts for Florida residents, or seasonal promotions. KOA often has loyalty programs (KOA Rewards) that could provide savings for frequent campers. Asking about potential deals or packages for local stays might make this "camping near me" option more attractive.
Customer Reviews and Considerations:
The two provided customer reviews offer starkly contrasting experiences. One review expresses extreme dissatisfaction, citing a feeling of not belonging without an ATV, property damage (a stolen side view mirror), poorly maintained campsites ("dog crap all over," "cigarette butts," "broken picnic table"), and a decision to leave after only one night. This review also mentions that "99.9 of the people" appeared to be long-term residents with fenced-off sites, potentially creating a less welcoming atmosphere for short-term visitors. This negative feedback raises significant concerns about the overall environment and management of the campground. Conversely, the second review is overwhelmingly positive, praising the waterfront location, clean facilities (showers and bathrooms), a well-equipped recreational building, a dog walking area, and exceptional service from someone named Wendy. This positive feedback suggests that some guests have had very enjoyable experiences at the campground. As a local user considering this "camping near me" option, it is crucial to weigh these contrasting reviews. The negative review points to potential issues with site maintenance, security, and the overall atmosphere for non-ATV campers, while the positive review highlights appealing amenities and cleanliness. Further investigation and potentially more recent reviews from other sources would be beneficial to get a more balanced perspective.

Consider also looking at alternative "camping near me" options in the Fort McCoy or Lake Oklawaha area to compare amenities, reviews, and overall suitability for your needs.
In conclusion, the Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday offers a "camping near me" option with potential access to Lake Oklawaha and a strong apparent focus on ATV riding. While one review praises its cleanliness and recreational facilities, another raises serious concerns about site maintenance, security, and the welcoming atmosphere for non-ATV campers. Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday Reviews
I'm not sure how KOA called this place a holiday. But if you don't have an ATV then you don't belong here. They also treat you that way has someone took my side view mirror off my Class A motorhome while we were sleeping. We were wondering why all the better looking campsites have fences around their site the people that live there. Which was 99.9 of the people except for the residence. Dog crap all over a campsite cigarette butts broken picnic table. This place was so amazing instead of our 3-day stay we left the very next day after we pulled in that afternoon. I lost the rest of our money along with a side view mirror
Apr 09, 2025 · Rahn Monrea'LThis is a wonderful place to get away from life! Right on a river! Has a big recreational building with a kids corner and two pull tables. Also has super clean showers and bathrooms!! A big screen tv to watch what you want and a lot of sitting space. Wendy was exceptional! She keeps it clean and nice! There is also a dog walking area! Highly recommended to stay here!
Jan 18, 2025 · Leanne FiveashLiterally criminal. The majority of the lots are owned and all owners were promised the world with an "investment opportunity". Everything was going fine until John left and then embezzlement happened. Our last check was mailed February 2024 and it bounced. We have not been paid since then. They don't return phone calls and are literally causing financial hardship and they do not care.
Mar 24, 2025 · Ali NguyenElizabeth was very kind and helpful. Waiting for aFedEx delivery and she was very understanding about how upset I was. Erica was nice too. This was a campground. The location was too far into the forest for our liking. Most of the time, there was no internet.
Jan 13, 2025 · Kim BommaritoGreat place to camp away from it all, and it's also right next to the forest, so bring your jeep, atv, side by side, or dirt bike
