Swan Lake Trading Post Campground Introduce
Looking for a distinctive "camping near me" experience in Montana? Swan Lake Trading Post Campground, located at 22998 MT-83 in Swan Lake, offers a blend of rustic accommodation and natural beauty that sets it apart. While not a traditional amenity-filled campground, it provides a memorable and down-to-earth escape for local residents seeking something different. You can reach them at (406) 272-3500 or +1 406-272-3500 for inquiries and bookings.
Based on recent customer reviews, Swan Lake Trading Post Campground offers a unique environment characterized by its natural surroundings and the hospitality of its owners. The area boasts a picturesque setting with a small creek, a footbridge crossing it, and a pond, all contributing to a generally great landscaping that creates a tranquil atmosphere. The presence of these water features adds to the charm and provides a soothing backdrop for your stay.
Accommodation options at Swan Lake Trading Post Campground include rustic cabins. It's important to note, as one reviewer experienced, that these cabins might be basic, potentially without electricity or private bathrooms. Nearby shared bathrooms and showers are available, but access might involve crossing the aforementioned footbridge over the creek. This rustic setup appeals to those who appreciate a more traditional and less commercialized camping experience, focusing on the simplicity of nature.
One of the unexpected highlights mentioned by a recent guest is the availability of homemade food, specifically pizza and coffee, at a reasonable price. This is a significant feature, especially for those who prefer not to cook entirely from scratch or who appreciate a warm meal after a day of exploring. The presence of a store, which may have included a kitchen (possibly under renovation at the time of one review in June 2022), adds a layer of convenience that goes beyond typical primitive campgrounds.
The camp hosts at Swan Lake Trading Post Campground consistently receive high praise for their cordiality, helpfulness, and friendly demeanor. One reviewer recounted a particularly challenging rainy period where the hosts went above and beyond to ensure their safety and comfort, offering firewood and extra lighting. This level of personal care and attention can significantly enhance the overall camping experience, making guests feel welcome and looked after.
The location of Swan Lake Trading Post Campground is also a significant draw. Situated near the stunning Swan Lake, it offers opportunities for lakeside walks and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. Furthermore, it's noted to be approximately an hour away from Glacier National Park. This makes it a viable and potentially more affordable option for those planning to visit the park and explore its breathtaking landscapes. While there is a town about 20 minutes away for groceries and other amenities, one reviewer cautioned against a nearby gas station for being overpriced, suggesting that planning for fuel and supplies in the more distant town might be advisable.
For local users considering "camping near me" with the intention of visiting Glacier National Park, Swan Lake Trading Post Campground presents an appealing alternative to staying closer to the park itself. The slightly longer drive is potentially offset by the unique charm of the campground, the homemade food, and the welcoming atmosphere. It offers a chance to experience a different side of Montana's beauty, away from the more crowded tourist hubs directly surrounding the park.
It's worth noting, as one reviewer pointed out, that mosquitoes can be present during certain times of the year. Therefore, bringing insect repellent is highly recommended to ensure a comfortable stay, especially during warmer months. This is a common consideration for many outdoor locations in Montana and should be factored into your packing list.
The overall sentiment from the reviews suggests that Swan Lake Trading Post Campground offers a memorable experience, even if it's not what one might typically expect from a campground. The rustic charm, the beautiful natural setting with the creek and pond, the delicious homemade food, and the exceptional hospitality of the owners all contribute to its unique appeal. For those who appreciate a more down-to-earth and personal camping experience, this could be an ideal local getaway.
In terms of promotional aspects, the campground's unique features—the rustic cabins, the homemade pizza and coffee, the proximity to Swan Lake and reasonable access to Glacier National Park—serve as strong selling points. The positive reviews, highlighting the friendly owners and the beautiful environment, act as testimonials to the quality of the experience offered. For local residents seeking a "camping near me" option that goes beyond the ordinary, Swan Lake Trading Post Campground provides a charming and memorable alternative.
Whether you're looking for a basecamp to explore Glacier National Park or simply a peaceful retreat in the Swan Lake area, the Swan Lake Trading Post Campground offers a blend of natural beauty and rustic charm. The combination of basic yet cozy accommodations, unexpected culinary delights, and warm hospitality makes it a noteworthy option for your next local camping adventure. Don't hesitate to call them to learn more about availability and to plan your unique Montana getaway.

Swan Lake Trading Post Campground Reviews
This is a review from June 2022 that I forgot to share with everyone. I’m sure after reading my review there will be many out there scratching their heads as to why I gave 5 stars. My wife & I took off on a 5 state 3 week motorcycle trip from Southern California through the Pacific Northwest & back. We actually had made reservations for another campsite but since it had been raining all day & wasn’t going to let up we decided to look for a more permanent structure to lay our heads at night for the next 3 days.Upon our arrival the husband & wife camp host team were extremely cordial, helpful and friendly. The small rustic cabin we stayed in had no electricity or bathroom. Bathrooms were nearby but to get to both the cabin & bathrooms/showers we had to traverse a small footbridge that went over a creek. It rained so hard that evening that the small bridge was completely covered with running water. So serious did it rain that the camp host came to us from an overgrown road to show us how we could get out in case of an emergency & to let me know that my motorcycle was in jeopardy of being swallowed up by the rising raging creek. Also I believe this creek ran into a small pond which also was getting full fast. For the next few days my wife and I played cards, built a small campfire in front of our cabin when the rain let up for a few hours & took walks to Swan Lake nearby. Again the camp host were extremely helpful & offered us some firewood & extra lighting. Also we brought water, food & snacks with us along with a small Jackery power supply that kept our phones & lights charged. Also I believe the front store which I believe also had a kitchen was being renovated at the time. It’s funny how life works especially as one gets older, hopefully more mature & overall is grateful every day they’re alive. Yes I would’ve loved to enjoy some sun, fishing, hiking & or to venture out a bit more & explore but all in all it was a such a great memorable experience that I wouldn’t trade for the world. The bond that was built upon between my wife & I during our stay here is everlasting & still giving us benefits.Thank you to the camp hosts that were there in June 2022. I will try & share some photos of our memorable experience here @ Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground.
Mar 13, 2025 · D.A. CorderoStayed in a cabin for a week in July of 2024 and absolutely loved it. The owners seem like quirky and super down to earth-type of people. The area is super beautiful with a little creek, bridge, pond, and generally great landscaping. The food! What a wonderful surprise to find that they had homemade pizza and coffee at a very reasonable price. There's a town about 20 minutes away with groceries, bars, food, etc. I would stray away from that closest gas station that states "last gas station for 25 miles," because they were way overpriced. This place is 1 hour away from Glacier national park and it was well worth it to stay there rather than anywhere closer.I will HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone going to Glacier National Park or the surrounding area. They do have mosquitos, so bring spray during that time of year, but that was literally the only bad thing I could say about the place.
Aug 11, 2024 · Ben RomeroIt was a campground. Very unorganized on the camping side of the business. They give you a key for the bathrooms and shower rooms. There were no instructions on returning said key after hours. The wifi does not work throughout the campground. Distance was a few feet off of the back deck. That was it.Seemed to be overbooked. They try to put you in spots that don't have a designated site, in order to make extra money. Now, the trading post store was great. They had it well stocked and had a lot of great items at great prices.
Jul 23, 2024 · JC KirkI had a wonderful and relaxing experience at the Campground, the camp host Kelly & Johna are very kind and helpful. This is the perfect place to get away and connect with nature. The amenities were really nice to have with some campgrounds offering none. I would recommend Swan Lake Trading Post & Campground to anyone passing through the area.
Jun 10, 2024 · Esperanza RodriguezAmazing place and grateful I stayed. Kind folks, great amenities, showers, shaded areas, little convenient store.Last summer, June 2023, I was at a point where I was bikepacking the Great Divide alone. I didn’t start alone but my riding partner came to the conclusion that she wasn’t going to continue after 5 days of riding. I trekked along. However, I was TERRIFIED of grizzlies. After a day of cycling through dense forest roads, I hopped on the freeway to camp at an established campground. Rather than going to Swan lake camp I stopped at the trading post campground. At the time Jim and Pam were the camphosts. Surprisingly, they hadn’t watched Parks & Rec haha. The folks there talked me through the fear of grizzlies. Someone running the Trading Post Camp, I believe her name is Lisa, invited me for coffee the morning of checkout. She was the person I didn’t know I needed at the time. She gave me the confidence I needed to continue on, trust myself, and feel good about whatever decision it be. Because of our chat I continued on with an open mind. She was right, after just one day the scenery changed and I continued to bikepack until I reached Steamboat Springs, Co. I tried to send a post card but idk if it arrived. Lisa, if you see this thank you so much for your kind and warm interaction and invitation (: PS if your name isn’t Lisa please kindly correct me .
