Gary's Family Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me"? Consider Gary's Family Campground, located at 44 Cox Ln, Great Cacapon, WV 25422, USA. This campground offers a variety of accommodation options, from self-catered cabins to RV hookups, tent sites, and even a lodge rental, aiming to cater to different camping preferences. To help local users decide if Gary's Family Campground is the right choice for their next outdoor adventure, let's delve into what the available information suggests about its environment, services, and features, based on real customer reviews.
Accommodation Variety
One of the notable features of Gary's Family Campground is the diverse range of accommodation available. According to a positive review, they offer "small self-catered cabins" that are described as "perfect," "clean and cozy." These cabins come equipped with amenities such as a "lovely porch with a swing overlooking a lake," a "fire circle," and a "picnic table." This suggests a comfortable and convenient option for those who prefer a bit more shelter than a tent. The reviewer also mentioned that "cabins are only the beginning of the offerings," indicating that the campground caters to various camping styles. Indeed, the review further states that you can go from "truly roughing out" (presumably tent camping) to "hooking up your big ol rv" or even "renting out a lodge," highlighting the versatility of this campground.
Environment and Ambiance
The environment of Gary's Family Campground seems to have both positive and negative aspects based on the reviews. One reviewer described their cabin experience as "very quiet, safe and homey," suggesting a peaceful atmosphere, at least in the cabin area. The presence of a lake view from some cabins adds to the appeal of the natural setting. However, another reviewer painted a less idyllic picture of the campsite itself, describing it as "peaceful but run-down" with "decaying picnic tables and overgrown camping areas." This discrepancy suggests that the quality and upkeep might vary across different parts of the campground.
One camper who brought a tent had a negative experience with their assigned site, which was on "hard-gravel" that prevented the use of tent stakes. This resulted in a wet tent interior during a rainy night. The location of this tent site was also described as being "by a run-down home and right by the entrance," leading to noise from passing cars and trucks, albeit "thankfully only a few." This indicates that not all campsites may offer the same level of peace and suitability for tent camping.
Services and Management
Regarding services, one positive review praised the owner, Gary, for his attentiveness and care. The reviewer who stayed in a cabin mentioned that when they were a "little chilly," Gary "personally delivered" a heater and even "built up my fire." This personal touch suggests a friendly and helpful management style. The reviewer concluded by saying, "Gary will take good care of you," indicating a positive interaction with the campground management.
However, the experience of the tent camper reveals a potential issue with site assignment and perhaps a lack of consideration for tent suitability. The camper was placed on a gravel site despite bringing a tent, and when they raised this issue later, the explanation provided ("he thought it best for me to be by the lodge") did not align with the camper's preference or the availability of other tent sites. This suggests a possible inconsistency in customer service or campsite allocation.
The review mentioning the lodge also provides some insight into the shared facilities. It notes that the lodge has "one single-toilet bathroom for men and one for women," as well as "one shower for each." For a lodge setting, these limited facilities might be a consideration for larger groups or during peak times.
Features and Offerings
Based on the reviews, the features of Gary's Family Campground include:
- Self-catered cabins with porches, lake views (for some), fire circles, and picnic tables.
- RV hookup sites.
- Tent camping areas.
- A lodge available for rent, with limited bathroom and shower facilities.
- Potentially a lake accessible from some cabins.
The availability of different types of accommodation is a significant feature, catering to a broad range of camping needs. The personal assistance from the owner, as highlighted in one review, could also be considered a positive feature of the service.
However, the reported issues with overgrown camping areas, decaying picnic tables, and unsuitable tent sites on gravel are aspects that potential visitors should be aware of. The limited bathroom and shower facilities in the lodge might also be a consideration for those interested in renting it.
Promotional Information
There is no explicit promotional information provided in the reviews. However, the positive experiences shared by some customers, particularly regarding the cozy cabins and the owner's helpfulness, could be seen as indirect endorsements. The variety of accommodation options itself could also be considered a selling point, appealing to different types of campers.
On the other hand, the negative feedback about the condition of some campsites and the unsuitable tent site serves as a cautionary note. Potential local users searching for "camping near me" will need to weigh these contrasting experiences.
Local User Consideration
For local users in the Great Cacapon, WV, area, Gary's Family Campground offers a nearby option with a range of accommodation choices. If you are looking for a cabin with a lake view and appreciate personal service, the positive review suggests a potentially pleasant experience. However, if you plan to tent camp, it would be wise to inquire specifically about the type and condition of the tent sites beforehand, based on the negative experience reported. Similarly, those considering RV camping or lodge rental might want to seek more information about the specific amenities and the overall condition of those facilities.
The contrasting reviews indicate that the experience at Gary's Family Campground might vary depending on the type of accommodation and the specific campsite or area within the campground. Local users might find it beneficial to contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers ((301) 641-5070 or +1 301-641-5070) to ask specific questions about site availability, amenities, and current conditions before making a booking.
In conclusion, Gary's Family Campground offers a diverse range of camping options "near me" in Great Cacapon, WV, with some guests reporting positive experiences, particularly in the cabins, and praising the owner's service. However, there are also reports of run-down areas and issues with specific campsites, especially for tent campers. Local users should consider these mixed reviews and potentially seek more detailed information before deciding if this campground meets their needs for a local camping getaway.

Gary's Family Campground Reviews
I can't say enough good things about my experience here! I stayed in a small self catered cabin which was perfect. Lovely porch with a swing over looking a lake. Fire circle and picnic table. Clean and cozy. I was a little chilly so the owner personally delivered me a heater, and then built up my fire for me! I felt at home and like family. Very quiet, safe and homey.Cabins are only the beginning of the offerings. Every thing from truly roughing out to hooking up your big ol rv or even renting out a lodge. Gary will take good care of you. So pleased.
Jun 09, 2024 · bethany cPeaceful but run-down campsite with decaying picnic tables and overgrown camping areas. Lodge has one single-toilet bathroom for men and one for women. One shower for each as well.I brought a tent but campground manager placed me on hard-gravel site that would not accept tent stakes and it poured that night. Without a pulled-tight rain fly, my tent area inside got wet. When I asked him about this later, he said he thought it best for me to be by the lodge. I disagree, and there were tent sites on the other side of the lodge.Plus my spot was by a run-down home and right by the entrance, so I'm lying on the ground as cars and trucks roll by; though thankfully only a few.Now back, I see there are other well-kept campgrounds within 30 miles.
Jun 01, 2024 · David Family: DoctorHaving spent quite a lot of time walking around the campground all weekend, I was able to see all of it. It is a beautiful location and isolated. West of Berkeley Springs on rt 9, coming down the mountain was harrowing for my sister and bil pulling a large-ish camper. The camper sites are nice and primarily wooded. I rented a cabin (the only one available, I was told). I feel the need to educate about cabin B. It has a half bath, no shower. No hot water. No towels, washcloths, soap, shampoo or conditioner. Bring your own sheets and pillows(s). There is a "bath house" on property, which consisted of a tiny room behind the office kno, thank you). I used my sister's shower in her camper. There was an incredible amount of dust in the room. It obviously had not been dusted in preparation for my visit. I realize all the roads are dirt, and things get dusty, but they knew for weeks I would be checking in and neglected to clean it. There is a full-size refrigerator and microwave in the room. I hope the larger cabins are cleaner and have more amenities.
Jul 24, 2024 · Mommy TrioWonderful remote campground. Localed on beautiful mountains of WV. It's a wooded campground with plenty of shade. They have cabins, tent and RV sites. We rented a cabin the first time we went and brought our new RV the second time. Grounds are well maintained. Cabin was very clean & was fully stocked for cooking. It's located near historic Berkeley springs. We really enjoyed seeing the natural hot springs and visiting the small shops. The campground has a small camp store & an adult and kids game room. Fully loaded with pool tables, darts, air hockey, ect, as well as library/sitting room. We had a lot of fun there, cooling off from the summer heat. They also have a small pond for catch and release. Facilities are clean. Staff friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!
Dec 28, 2022 · Marion CookBy far my favorite place to go camping. Even from the first time my husband and I went we were treated like friends, not customers. Gary and Nadine go out if their way to make sure everyone is happy and comfortable, they are very warm and inviting. The campground is very clean, and the sites are very spacious. My favorite is the lodge, it offers games, pool table, darts and a super cozy and super cute reading room or even just hanging out on the top deck with a spectacular view.
