Guernsey Lake Campground

Kalkaska, MI 49646, USA

4.0
Quiet peaceful and in need of care. The camp sites are larger, very large. The campground sits on the shores of Gurnesy Lake located on the county line between Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties. The real plus, this is the only campground that boarders the Sand Lakes Quiet Area and its many miles of hiking and biking trails traversing over 4 square miles of lakes, woods and solitude with no motorized vehicles. The campground is managed by the Michigan State Parks system. Like many of the state forest campgrounds it suffers from basic maintenance and care. The Michigan State Park system puts it's efforts and budget into the more popular and heavily used State Parks. The state forest campgrounds are given minimal attention. The campground does offer gravel roads and large sites that are less than level. The sites were designed for an era of tent camping and not for modern RV's. There is no electricity. Water is supplied via hand pumps and the bathrooms are pit toilets. For the modern RV none of this matters as most are self contained. For the camp fee you do receive a fire pit and a picnic table. What you really receive is a lot of wildlife, peace and quiet and beautiful views of the lake and woods. If the state took better care of the place it would get 4 stars our of 5. In the present condition 3 stars are generous. - Micheal Whelan

Guernsey Lake Campground Introduce

Looking for a "camping near me" experience that immerses you in the tranquility of Northern Michigan's wilderness? Guernsey Lake Campground, situated in Kalkaska, MI, offers a rustic escape for those seeking peace, quiet, and direct access to stunning natural landscapes. Located on the northern shores of Guernsey Lake, this state forest campground provides a unique opportunity to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature.

Guernsey Lake Campground's prime location on the county line between Grand Traverse and Kalkaska counties offers a significant advantage for outdoor enthusiasts. It is the only campground that directly borders the expansive Sand Lakes Quiet Area, a remarkable natural preserve spanning over four square miles. This proximity provides unparalleled access to a network of hiking and biking trails that wind through diverse terrain of lakes, woods, and open spaces, all within a motorized vehicle-free environment. Imagine stepping directly from your campsite onto miles of trails, perfect for leisurely strolls, challenging hikes, or invigorating bike rides, surrounded by the solitude and beauty of Northern Michigan.

Managed by the Michigan State Parks system, specifically Keith J. Charters Traverse City State Park, Guernsey Lake Campground offers a more primitive camping experience compared to some of the larger, more developed state parks. As highlighted by visitor reviews, the campground, like many state forest campgrounds, operates with a focus on preserving the natural environment, which means basic maintenance and care may be less intensive than in more heavily utilized parks. This contributes to its rustic charm and appeal for those seeking a more authentic outdoor experience.

The campground features gravel roads leading to large campsites, which reviewers note are particularly spacious, a remnant of an era more focused on tent camping. While the sites may be less level than those designed for modern RVs, they still accommodate both tents and smaller trailers. It's important to note that Guernsey Lake Campground operates without electrical hookups. Water is provided through hand pumps, adding to the self-sufficient nature of the camping experience. Bathroom facilities consist of pit toilets, further emphasizing the rustic and back-to-nature feel of the campground.

For modern RV campers who are self-contained, the lack of electricity and reliance on hand-pumped water and pit toilets may be less of a concern. The significant benefits of the large campsites, the unparalleled access to the Sand Lakes Quiet Area, and the serene environment often outweigh these basic amenities. The modest camp fee includes the provision of a fire pit and a picnic table at each site, essential elements for enjoying the classic camping experience.

What Guernsey Lake Campground truly offers is an abundance of wildlife sightings, a profound sense of peace and quiet, and breathtaking views of Guernsey Lake and the surrounding woodlands. The opportunity to immerse oneself in nature, away from the noise and distractions of modern life, is the primary draw for many visitors. The tranquility of the lake, the rustling of leaves in the wind, and the calls of local wildlife create a truly restorative atmosphere.

The Sand Lakes Quiet Area Pathway, which connects to the renowned North Country Trail, offers 8.5 miles of looped trails with varying levels of difficulty, from flat sections suitable for easy walks to more hilly terrain for a challenging hike. This extensive trail system is a major attraction for hikers of all skill levels, providing endless opportunities for exploration and discovery within the quiet and undisturbed natural environment.

Beyond hiking and biking, Guernsey Lake and the surrounding area offer a range of other outdoor activities. Fishing enthusiasts can try their luck at catching largemouth bass, brown trout, and perch in the 50-acre Guernsey Lake. A boat launch is available for those wishing to explore the lake by boat. During the winter months, the area transforms into a haven for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, offering a different perspective on the beautiful landscape. Hunting is also permitted in designated areas, catering to those interested in pursuing this activity.

Guernsey Lake State Forest Campground provides 35 campsites suitable for tents and small trailers, including eight walk-in sites that offer an even more secluded camping experience. It's important to note that campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, as reservations are not accepted. Camping is limited to a maximum stay of 15 days, allowing many visitors to experience the beauty and tranquility of the area throughout the camping season. Potable water is available from a hand-pump well, and vault toilets are provided for basic sanitation.

In conclusion, if you are searching for "camping near me" that prioritizes natural beauty, peace, and access to exceptional hiking and biking opportunities, Guernsey Lake Campground is an excellent choice. While it offers a more rustic experience with basic amenities, its unparalleled location bordering the Sand Lakes Quiet Area, its large campsites, and the stunning natural surroundings provide a unique and rewarding camping getaway in Northern Michigan. For those who appreciate the tranquility of nature and the opportunity for outdoor adventure, Guernsey Lake Campground promises a serene and memorable escape.
