Scheck's Place State Forest Campground

6069 Brown Bridge Rd, Traverse City, MI 49696, USA

4.0
Convenient location for accessing the river. There are a total of about 30 sites, 10 on one side of the road where the main boat/canoe launch is, and 20 on the other side. Only the water pump on the side of the main boat/canoe launch was working when I visited. There's minimal privacy between the sites, most of them are very open with no vegetation between or hiding them from the road. Would've rated it higher if the sites were more private and if both water pumps were in service. There are also a few places to fish or put in a canoe/kayak between this campground and the forks state forest campground. - Yuliang Hu

Scheck's Place State Forest Campground Introduce

For local users in search of "camping near me" that combines convenient river access with exciting opportunities for off-road vehicle (ORV) riding, Scheck's Place State Forest Campground, located at 6069 Brown Bridge Rd in Traverse City, offers a unique blend of natural resources and recreational activities. Situated within the state forest, this campground provides a basecamp for exploring the scenic beauty of the area and engaging in various outdoor adventures.

The environment surrounding Scheck's Place State Forest Campground is characterized by its proximity to the river, likely the Boardman River given a review mention. This location offers convenient access for a variety of water-based activities. The campground itself is divided into two sections situated on either side of the road. One side, where the main boat and canoe launch is located, features approximately 10 campsites. The other side offers around 20 additional sites. This division suggests different camping experiences might be available depending on which side you choose, with the boat launch side perhaps being more geared towards those planning to spend time on the water.

A key feature of Scheck's Place is its direct access to the river, making it a convenient spot for launching canoes and kayaks. The presence of a main boat launch further indicates suitability for small motorized boats as well. For those interested in fishing, the campground's location on the river provides opportunities to cast a line. Additionally, the reviews mention that there are a few other places to fish or put in a canoe/kayak located between Scheck's Place and the Forks State Forest Campground, suggesting a wider area rich in water access points for exploration.

Beyond the river, Scheck's Place State Forest Campground is particularly appealing to enthusiasts of off-road vehicles. One reviewer enthusiastically shares that their family camps here every spring specifically for the "ton of trails for riding" their quads and dirt bikes. The extensive trail network even allows riders to travel all the way to Kalkaska, indicating a significant and well-maintained system of ORV trails accessible from the campground. This makes Scheck's Place a prime destination for those seeking "camping near me" that caters to ORV adventures.

Adding to the unique character of the area, campers should be aware of the possibility of encountering horses from the nearby Ranch Rudolph, suggesting a local equestrian presence and potentially shared trails or road usage in the vicinity. This adds a touch of the local rural landscape to the camping experience.

A notable natural feature enjoyed by visitors is the rope swing located in the Boardman River. This provides a fun and refreshing activity, especially on warmer days. Another popular activity mentioned is tubing down the river from the "horse camping part of Scheck's" (presumably a section further upriver catering to those with horses) to the main campground. This float trip is described as a short 10 to 15-minute journey, with the cold water being a welcome refreshment on hot days. This highlights the river as a central element for recreation and enjoyment at the campground.

In terms of services and amenities, the information is somewhat limited. A water pump is mentioned as being available on the side of the road with the main boat/canoe launch. However, during one visitor's experience, only this one was working, with the pump on the other side being out of service. This is an important consideration for campers, as access to potable water is essential. It's advisable to check the current status of amenities when making reservations or upon arrival.

One potential drawback mentioned in the reviews is the minimal privacy between campsites. Most sites are described as very open with no vegetation to separate them or shield them from the road. This lack of privacy might be a concern for campers who value a more secluded and intimate camping experience. It's something to be aware of when choosing a site, as the openness could impact the overall feeling of immersion in nature.

Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the key features themselves can be seen as the primary draws:

  • Direct access to the Boardman River: Ideal for boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.
  • Extensive network of ORV trails: Offering significant opportunities for quad and dirt bike riding.
  • Unique recreational activities: Including a rope swing in the river and the possibility of tubing down to the campground.
  • Location within a state forest: Providing access to a larger natural area for exploration.

While the lack of privacy between sites and the potential for only one working water pump might be considerations, the unique combination of river access and ORV trails makes Scheck's Place State Forest Campground a noteworthy option for local users seeking "camping near me" with a focus on active outdoor recreation. The opportunity to ride ORVs on extensive trails, coupled with the enjoyment of the Boardman River for boating, fishing, and swimming-related activities, offers a distinctive camping experience near Traverse City.

For those planning a visit, it would be beneficial to inquire about the current status of all amenities, particularly the water pumps, and to consider the open nature of the campsites when selecting a location within the campground. Despite these potential drawbacks, the access to adventure and the natural beauty of the state forest make Scheck's Place a destination worth considering for your next "camping near me" getaway.
