Harlequin Campground Introduce
Are you a local adventurer in Washington State seeking a distinctive camping experience listed under the 'camping near me' category? Harlequin Campground, situated in the remote and scenic Stehekin area (address: Stehekin, WA 98852, USA), offers a unique walk-in camping opportunity accessible via ferry up Lake Chelan. You can reach them for inquiries at (360) 854-7200 or their mobile number, +1 360-854-7200. Based on feedback from fellow campers, Harlequin Campground presents a blend of natural beauty and rustic amenities, with some considerations for noise levels.
The journey to Harlequin Campground is part of its unique appeal. As a walk-in campground, it requires a ferry ride up Lake Chelan, followed by a shuttle to reach the vicinity of the campsite. This mode of access ensures a degree of seclusion and immersion in the natural environment from the moment your adventure begins. One reviewer highlighted the enjoyable experience of taking the ferry with their gear and then having lunch at the restaurant in Stehekin before boarding the blue shuttle to the campground. This suggests that while the campground itself is somewhat remote, there are accessible services and conveniences in the nearby Stehekin community.
The shuttle ride to Harlequin Campground appears to be more than just transportation. According to a review, the shuttle makes a 10-minute stop at a bakery and gift shops, offering a chance to grab refreshments and souvenirs – a delightful bonus for campers. The shuttle route also provides scenic views, including Rainbow Falls, and the driver is described as a fantastic tour guide, enhancing the overall travel experience to the campground. Campers disembark at the steel bridge for a short walk to their chosen campsite, further emphasizing the walk-in nature of this camping destination.
Once at the campground, the environment is described as being right next to the Stehekin River. One reviewer noted that the river is full of fish, making it an attractive location for anglers. Another camper mentioned bringing their fishing rod or waders/fly gear and successfully catching cutthroat salmon, highlighting the excellent fishing opportunities available. The proximity to the river also contributes to the natural ambiance of the campground.
The campsites themselves are characterized as sandy, leading one reviewer to describe it as "beach camping with all the sand/water." This type of terrain could offer unique opportunities for setting up camp and a different feel compared to more traditional forest floor campsites. Hammock camping is also reportedly easy at Harlequin Campground, providing flexibility in accommodation options.
In terms of services and amenities, Harlequin Campground provides essential facilities for a comfortable backcountry experience. Campers have access to bear boxes for secure food storage, pit toilets, and trash/recycling services – a significant convenience for a walk-in campground. Fire pits are also available at the campsites, allowing for campfires and cooking. It's important to note that, based on the reviews, the primary source of water is the stream, and campers are advised to bring a water filter, such as a Sawyer filter, to ensure safe drinking water.
While the natural setting and amenities are appealing, potential visitors should be aware of some environmental considerations mentioned in the reviews. One camper who stayed at the end of October noted that while it was nice to wake up to the sound of bald eagles at the river, the campground is close to an airport, resulting in daytime noise. Additionally, they reported hearing loud motors, possibly generators, until late at night. Another reviewer mentioned that the smell from the toilets could be noticeable from a distance. These points are important for local users to consider when planning their stay, especially if they are sensitive to noise or odors.
A notable feature mentioned in one review is that camping is free during the off-season. This could be a significant draw for local campers looking for budget-friendly outdoor experiences during the quieter times of the year. However, it's essential to verify the specific dates and conditions for free off-season camping by contacting the campground directly.
In summary, Harlequin Campground offers a unique and adventurous camping experience for local users willing to embrace a walk-in format. The journey via ferry and shuttle, with scenic stops and a knowledgeable driver, adds to the overall appeal. The campground's proximity to the fish-filled Stehekin River and the sandy, beach-like campsites provide a distinctive environment. Essential amenities such as bear boxes, pit toilets, and trash/recycling are available, though campers should be prepared to filter water from the stream. While the sounds of nature, like bald eagles, can be enjoyed, potential daytime noise from the nearby airport and nighttime motor sounds should be taken into account. The possibility of free off-season camping presents an additional incentive for local outdoor enthusiasts. For those seeking a blend of natural beauty and a slightly more rugged camping experience near Stehekin, Harlequin Campground is worth considering.

Harlequin Campground Reviews
Amazing walk-in campground! Caught the ferry up the lake with our gear, then had lunch at the restaurant in Stehekin before catching the blue shuttle to Harlequin campground. Shuttle stops at the bakery and awesome gift shops for 10 min - grab an ice cream and oat bar!! You can see Rainbow Falls from the shuttle and the driver is a fantastic tour guide! Get off the shuttle at the steel bridge for a short walk to your campsite. There are bear boxes, pit toilets, and trash/recycling here (amazing right?!). Bring your fishing rod or waders/fly gear for some amazing fishing! Caught a few nice cutthroat salmon! The fire pits are great and the lots are sandy - think of it like beach camping with all the sand/water. You can easily hammock camp and water is available from the stream (bring your Sawyer filter!).
Jul 19, 2023 · Mickey WaltonA large campground right next to the Stehekin river. Camped at the end of October. River is full of fish. Close to airport, noisy in the daytime. Can hear loud motors until late at night, possibly generators. Nice to wake to the sound of bald eagles at the river. The toilets can be smelled very far away. Free to camp in the off season. Fire rings. No water besides the river.
