Harpers Ferry Campground

1816 Potomac St, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, USA

3.0
We had a two night reservation, but left after one night because it feels like the trains are on top of you all night long. Also, the road leads to a dead end fishing spot so there were random cars driving up and down the road, speeding by at all hours of the night...Has the potential to be so nice being right on the river, the sites are a bit close together so privacy won't be a thing mid-summer. If you stay here, be ready to not sleep much because the trains run all night long. We counted 13 from 10:00pm until 6:00am... Bathrooms are okay, basic but sufficient. Cars honking their horn at all hours for the tunnel at the end of the campground rather than just looking for traffic.... Also the check in is about 2 miles away. There is so much potential... - Joshua Powers

Harpers Ferry Campground Introduce

For local residents in and around Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, who are searching within the "camping near me" category, Harpers Ferry Campground, located at 1816 Potomac St, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, USA, presents a camping option with a notable location. They can be contacted at (304) 535-2663 or +1 304-535-2663. Based on recent customer reviews, the campground offers a unique setting but also has some drawbacks that potential visitors should be aware of.

One of the most frequently praised aspects of Harpers Ferry Campground is its location. It is described as being "right on the Potomac River," offering a potentially beautiful waterfront environment. Its proximity to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park, mentioned as "just a few minutes" away, is also a significant advantage for those wishing to explore the historical and natural attractions of the area. One reviewer with extensive RVing experience rated the location as "5 stars," highlighting its beauty.

However, despite the appealing location, several reviewers mentioned significant noise issues. The presence of trains running "all night long" was a major concern, with one reviewer counting 13 trains between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM. This level of train noise could severely impact the sleep quality of campers. Additionally, the road leading to a nearby fishing spot results in "random cars driving up and down the road, speeding by at all hours of the night," further contributing to noise disturbances.

Another source of noise mentioned was cars honking their horns "at all hours" for a tunnel located at the end of the campground, rather than checking for traffic. These consistent noise issues from trains and vehicular traffic appear to be a significant negative aspect of staying at Harpers Ferry Campground.

The condition of the bathhouse also received critical feedback. One long-term RVer described it as the "worst" they had encountered out of over 60 campgrounds. The bathhouse was described as "filthy dirty," with concerns about when it was last cleaned, and it reportedly smelled horrible. Furthermore, the showers were described as "cool at best" even when overnight temperatures were in the 40s and daytime temperatures were in the 60s. There was no temperature control, and the push-button operation resulted in the water starting cold after each push. The camp host's suggestion to use a specific shower and run the sink hot water did not resolve the issue, leading to a "miserable cold shower" for one guest. This suggests that the bathhouse facilities may be a significant area of concern for the campground.

One reviewer noted that the campsites are "a bit close together," which could reduce privacy, especially during peak season in mid-summer. This is a common characteristic of some campgrounds and might be a consideration for those seeking a more secluded camping experience.

Another practical point mentioned is that "the check in is about 2 miles away" from the actual campground location. This could be an inconvenience for arriving guests who might not expect to travel a distance to register before settling into their campsite.

In summary, for local users searching for "camping near me," Harpers Ferry Campground offers a potentially beautiful location directly on the Potomac River and in close proximity to the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. These are significant advantages for those wishing to explore the natural and historical attractions of the area.

However, potential campers should be prepared for significant noise pollution from trains and local traffic, which many reviewers found disruptive to sleep. Additionally, the bathhouse facilities have been described as extremely dirty with inadequate and cold showers. The campsites being close together might also impact the desired level of privacy.

Given these points, local users considering Harpers Ferry Campground should weigh the prime location against the reported noise and the poor condition of the bathhouse. If you prioritize being close to the river and the National Park and are less sensitive to noise or plan to use your own facilities, this campground might still be an option. However, if a quiet environment and clean, functional restrooms and showers are important, alternative campgrounds in the area might be more suitable.

It might be beneficial for interested local campers to contact the campground directly to inquire about recent improvements or any mitigation efforts regarding the noise and the bathhouse conditions. Asking about the proximity of campsites to the river and the layout of the campground could also help in making a decision.

In conclusion, Harpers Ferry Campground boasts a fantastic location for exploring the natural beauty and history of Harpers Ferry. However, potential local visitors should be well aware of the likely presence of significant noise from trains and traffic, as well as reports of a very dirty and poorly functioning bathhouse. If these drawbacks are not a major concern, the location could make it a worthwhile stay. Otherwise, exploring other "camping near me" options in the Harpers Ferry area might be advisable.
