Hermit Island Campground stands out as a destination that promises a blend of wild, unspoiled nature and a welcoming, family-oriented atmosphere. Situated on an island, it offers a distinct camping experience characterized by its majestic sunsets and beautiful beaches. This unique island setting contributes significantly to its environment, providing campers with opportunities for beachcombing, enjoying coastal scenery, and experiencing the tranquility of an island getaway. The positive reviews highlight the enduring natural charm of the location, with one visitor noting its "wild and gorgeous" state even after many years.
The environment of Hermit Island Campground is undoubtedly one of its key features. Being an island campground, it offers a sense of seclusion and a direct connection to the coastal ecosystem. Campers can expect to be surrounded by the sounds of the ocean, the sights of the shoreline, and the natural beauty of the island landscape. The mention of "beautiful beaches" suggests opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and simply relaxing by the water. The "majestic sunsets" further enhance the appeal, promising breathtaking evening views that can be enjoyed from various vantage points across the island.
In terms of services and features, the reviews provide some valuable insights. The emphasis on a "family oriented atmosphere" suggests that the campground is designed to be welcoming and safe for families with children. This often translates to a supportive community environment and potentially organized activities or amenities catering to families. The mention of "the team at Hermit Island works hard to maintain a friendly, inviting, and wholesome camping experience" underscores a commitment to guest satisfaction and a positive social environment within the campground.
One crucial piece of information highlighted in the reviews is the importance of adhering to the campground's rules for gaining entry to the island. This likely pertains to specific check-in procedures, transportation guidelines, or regulations designed to protect the island's environment and the safety of its visitors. Potential campers should proactively inquire about these rules when making reservations to ensure a smooth arrival and access to the campground.
Another critical advisory concerns the tides and the potential for the road to flood. This suggests that access to Hermit Island might be tide-dependent at certain times. Campers planning their arrival and departure should be aware of the tidal schedules and make necessary arrangements to avoid any inconvenience or potential hazards. This unique aspect of an island campground requires careful planning and attention to the natural rhythms of the coastal environment.
The positive feedback, such as the "little slice of paradise" description and the high recommendation, indicates that many visitors have had exceptional experiences at Hermit Island Campground. The combination of the stunning natural environment, the welcoming atmosphere fostered by the staff, and the unique island setting appears to create a memorable camping destination for those seeking "camping near me" with a coastal twist.
For local users in the Phippsburg area, Hermit Island Campground offers a distinct alternative to mainland camping options. The allure of camping on an island with direct beach access and the promise of beautiful sunsets are significant draws. However, the necessity of following specific entry rules and being mindful of tidal flooding adds a layer of planning that mainland campgrounds might not require. Potential visitors should view these not as deterrents but as part of the unique adventure that Hermit Island offers.
While the provided reviews are overwhelmingly positive, focusing on the environment and atmosphere, they do not offer specific details about the types of campsites available (e.g., tent sites, RV hookups), the amenities offered (e.g., restrooms, showers, fire pits), or any specific promotional information. Local users interested in these details should contact the campground directly using the provided phone numbers to inquire about site availability, amenities, fees, and any current promotions or special offers.
The enduring appeal of Hermit Island Campground, as suggested by the reviewer who visited after 40+ years, speaks to the lasting quality of the location and the experience it offers. The potential motivation for a former camper to consider camping again highlights the positive impact of the island's environment and atmosphere. This long-standing positive reputation, coupled with the recent positive feedback, suggests that Hermit Island Campground consistently delivers a high-quality camping experience for those who appreciate natural beauty and a welcoming community.
In conclusion, for local users searching within the "camping near me" category, Hermit Island Campground in Phippsburg, Maine, presents a compelling option for a unique coastal camping experience. Its stunning environment, characterized by beautiful beaches and majestic sunsets, combined with a family-oriented and friendly atmosphere, makes it a highly recommended destination. However, potential visitors must be aware of and prepared to follow the rules for island entry and to consider the impact of tides on road access. Direct contact with the campground is advised to gather specific information about campsites, amenities, and any promotional offers to ensure a well-planned and enjoyable island camping adventure.

Hermit Island Campground Reviews
Only there for an event and walk on the beach. Still wild and gorgeous campsite 40+ years later! I may be motivated to try camping out again. Be advised- follow the rules to gain entry into the island, tides do flood the road.
Sep 23, 2024 · mary birdMajestic sunsets, beautiful beaches, and a family oriented atmosphere make this campground a little slice of paradise. The team at Hermit Island works hard to maintain a friendly, inviting, and wholesome camping experience. Highly recommend!!!
Aug 10, 2024 · Richie TraversI don't even know where to start; this was our first time staying at a private campground and we loved everything about it! Booking a site here means either calling or mailing a letter so a little more effort than your typical online booking process, but kinda charming. The sites are beautiful and clean, and are well spaced/private. The views at the sites around the exterior of the "island" are incredible and listening to the waves is a great way to fall asleep. Head Beach is easily accessible and is also a nice clean spot to walk around. The camp store sells everything you would generally need (including fresh lobsters) and everyone we spoke to was very friendly! Snack bar was closed during our stay since it is still early in the season. The toilets and shower were clean and the showers are free. Cell service is unreliable at the campground so it's a great place to unplug. Overall one of our favorite camping experiences and locations so far - looking forward to visiting again!
Mar 19, 2023 · Briana StefaniskoOne of the best camping experiences. Camping with multiple beaches, picturesque views. There’s a really cool pavilion area with 10-12 picnic tables with a roof top and fire pit in the middle, amazing view and a path to a small beach area. We made breakfast there one morning. Your able to buy lobsters right on site and they cook them for you if needed as well as steamers.
Aug 03, 2023 · Eileen Hays-Bonaccolto (Andrew & Eileen)Tent camping Fri., Sat, and Sun. nights in early June 2021 with two tweens at Cross Island 4 site. The view was excellent and most sites are clean, large, and well spaced. The campground was quiet and not crowded, but we visited early in the season. Plenty of vault toilets. Free, warm showers and flush toilets within walking distance from most sites and are relatively clean. Roads are narrow, very bumpy, curvy, some are steep, and not well marked. I would NOT recommend bicycling here, especially for children as difficult to see ahead. Water available but not always easy to get large containers back to site. Our picnic table was gross with both the table and seats covered with oily spots, but other sites may be better.
