Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites Introduce
For local adventurers seeking a more rustic and potentially secluded camping experience within the "camping near me" category, Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites near Isabella, MN, presents a mixed bag of features and environmental considerations. Located at Wanless Rd, Isabella, MN 55607, USA, and reachable by phone at (218) 323-7722 or mobile at +1 218-323-7722, this campground in the Superior National Forest offers both drive-in rustic sites and more remote backcountry options. While some aspects have received positive feedback, others, particularly the environment of the drive-in sites, warrant careful consideration for those browsing "camping near me" for their next outdoor adventure.
The environment of the drive-in portion of Hogback Lake Rustic Campground is notably described as being "built in a bog." This unique characteristic has significant implications for the camping experience. According to a reviewer, there are only three designated campsites, which are "very spread out," offering a degree of privacy. However, the camping is limited to "gravel elevated drive-in spots," with "no grass for tents." This suggests that tent campers might find these sites less than ideal or may need to adapt their setup. The bog environment also leads to the presence of "standing water," which, as highlighted in a review, is conducive to mosquito breeding, potentially making insect management a significant factor, especially during warmer months.
In terms of services, Hogback Lake Rustic Campground offers a few basic amenities. A key advantage mentioned for camping in Superior National Forest, in general, is the ability to "gather your own firewood" (subject to regulations), potentially saving on costs compared to state parks where firewood is often sold. The campground also features a boat landing and a fishing dock, which are noted as "nice." A picnic area is also available lakeside, making it a potential spot for day trips even if overnight camping at the drive-in sites is not preferred. For those interested in exploring beyond the immediate campground, a "nice walking trail around half the lake" is mentioned, although it is "interrupted by the channel between the two lakes." This suggests the possibility of scenic walks with some limitations. The toilet facilities are present but have been noted by one reviewer as needing "better cleaning."
The features of Hogback Lake Rustic Campground are varied. The spaciousness of the campsites is a positive aspect mentioned, with sites described as "fairly roomy." The ability to gather one's own firewood is another potential benefit for those comfortable with this practice. The presence of a boat landing and fishing dock caters to those interested in lake activities. However, the primary feature that stands out is the availability of a "paddle-in campsite on the connecting lake (Canal Lake)," which is described as "beautiful" and the "only campsite on your own private lake." This backcountry option offers a significantly different experience, promising solitude and a more immersive natural setting. For those specifically seeking remote and private camping within the "camping near me" category, this paddle-in site could be a major draw.
Currently, no specific promotional information for Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites is available in the provided reviews. Local users exploring this option through the "camping near me" category should look for information regarding camping fees, permit requirements for both the drive-in and backcountry sites, and any seasonal restrictions. It would be advisable to contact the Superior National Forest or the specific management for Hogback Lake Campground directly using the provided phone numbers to inquire about any current promotions, special rates for local residents, or information regarding guided tours or canoe rentals that might be associated with the backcountry sites. Information about firewood gathering regulations and any potential fire restrictions would also be important to obtain.
The reviews also highlight some potential drawbacks of the drive-in campsites. The proximity to a county road with a 50 mph speed limit, which was noted as being closer behind campsite #1 than the lake was in front, could be a concern for noise levels and the overall sense of tranquility. The experience of one angler who fished for three days using worms and artificial lures and caught "nothing but perch" despite the lake being known as a "dedicated rainbow trout lake" suggests that fishing success might be variable. The bog environment and associated mosquito issues are also significant factors to consider, especially for camping during the warmer months. One reviewer suggested that the first campsite "could use some tree thinning to get some breeze to help keep the bugs down," indicating that airflow might be limited in some areas.
For local users browsing "camping near me," Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites offers two distinct types of experiences. The drive-in sites provide a spread-out layout and access to a boat landing and fishing dock but are situated in a bog environment with potential insect issues and proximity to a road. The backcountry paddle-in site on Canal Lake, however, promises a more secluded and potentially more rewarding experience for those willing and able to undertake the paddle. Hikers might also appreciate the walking trail around part of Hogback Lake. When considering this campground, it's crucial to weigh the pros and cons based on individual preferences and preparedness for the specific environmental conditions.
In conclusion, Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites near Isabella, MN, presents a rustic camping option within the Superior National Forest. The drive-in sites offer space and some amenities but are located in a bog environment with potential drawbacks like mosquitoes and road noise. The highlight appears to be the paddle-in backcountry site on Canal Lake, offering a more private and scenic experience. Local users exploring "camping near me" should carefully consider these factors, inquire about permits and fees, and be well-prepared for the specific environment they choose to camp in. Contacting the campground directly for the most up-to-date information and any potential promotions is highly recommended.

Hogback Lake Rustic Campground & Backcountry Sites Reviews
This is built in a bog! There are 3 sites, and they are very spread out, but only the gravel elevated drive-in spots are available for camping, (no grass for tents). The great advantage for camping in Superior National Forest vs. a state park is the ability to gather your own firewood instead of paying for it, (Approx $5/day). But in this bog, you couldn’t venture even a few feet off the campsite. Because it was a BOG!The other things that bogs have? Standing water, which is where mosquitoes hatch. The lake prided itself on being a dedicated rainbow trout lake. In the three days I fished it, worms and artifice lures, I caught nothing but perch and talked to others with as little success.Campsites were across the road from the lake, and the county road (50 mph speed ) was closer behind us than the lake. In campsite #1 it was 25 yards through the bog to get to the lake. Two stars because it was spread out and did have a boat landing and fishing dock. I won’t be returning. The picnic area (lakeside), and fishing dock were nice for a day trip. There was a nice walking trail around half the lake, (interrupted by the channel between the two lakes), and other than the infrequent road traffic it was very peaceful. The paddle-in campsite on the connecting lake, (Canal Lake) was beautiful. Only campsite on your own private lake.
Aug 10, 2022 · Stephen - Not SteveCampsites are nice and fairly roomy. The 1st site could use some tree thinning to get some breeze to help keep the bugs down. Toilet could use better cleaning. Lake is beautiful and really nice trails to other lakes. Fishing was fair.

Oct 21, 2024 · Tyler DayLoved this campground so much! It's only got 3 spots but the hiking trails are amazing and the solitude can't be beat!
Oct 02, 2021 · Jennifer Fitzwater (Jen F)Great free campsites with easy water access. There are 3 drive in campsites, 3 water access campsites and 2 hike in campsites. There are a chain of 4 lakes that can be accessed by paddling and short portages. It is a quiet place during the week, but heavily used on the weekends. I did not have any luck catching any rainbow trout.
