Imperial Meadows Campground Introduce
Looking for "camping near me" that offers stunning meadow views and access to some of Yellowstone National Park's remarkable geothermal and natural wonders? Imperial Meadows Campground, located within Yellowstone National Park at WY 82190, USA, might be the place for you. Based on recent visitor feedback, this campsite offers a unique experience with both notable positives and a few environmental factors to be aware of.
The environment of Imperial Meadows Campground is primarily characterized by its open setting. As one camper described, "The campsite is really out in the open and there aren’t a whole ton of trees around." This lack of significant tree cover means that you can likely expect expansive views across the surrounding meadow. This open environment could be particularly appealing for those who enjoy panoramic vistas and stargazing opportunities. However, it also implies that shade might be limited, so it's wise to come prepared with sun protection and potentially shade structures if desired.
A significant environmental factor mentioned by the reviewer is the presence of "a ton of buffalo pies," which are bison droppings. While these are a natural part of the Yellowstone ecosystem, the reviewer noted that they likely contributed to a problem with flies, stating that the flies were "pretty damn bad" during their early August visit. This is an important consideration for potential campers, especially during the warmer months. Being prepared with insect repellent and possibly netting could be crucial for a comfortable stay.
Despite the fly issue, the visitor did highlight a major positive: the "great view over the meadow." This suggests that the open environment does indeed offer scenic vistas, allowing campers to appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Imagine waking up to the sight of a vast meadow stretching out before you, potentially with the sounds of nature all around.
In terms of services and features, the review specifically mentions the presence of a "bearbox," which is a significant amenity in bear country like Yellowstone. Bear boxes provide a secure place to store food and scented items, helping to prevent bears from being attracted to campsites and ensuring the safety of both visitors and wildlife. The availability of a bear box at Imperial Meadows Campground is a notable advantage and a testament to the park's commitment to safety.
While the reviewer did not encounter any buffalo during their early August stay, they did mention the abundance of buffalo pies, suggesting that these majestic animals do frequent the area at other times of the year. They speculated that "I’m sure there’s more buffalo at different times of the year." For wildlife enthusiasts, the potential to see buffalo grazing in the meadow near the campsite could be a major draw. However, it's important to remember that wildlife sightings are never guaranteed and to always maintain a safe distance from any animals you may encounter.
One of the key features of Imperial Meadows Campground is its proximity to some of Yellowstone's renowned attractions. The reviewer noted that it is "very close to Imperial Geyser." Imperial Geyser is a significant and often active geyser in the Upper Geyser Basin, known for its impressive eruptions. Staying at Imperial Meadows Campground offers convenient access to witness this geothermal spectacle. Additionally, the campsite is also a "close hike to a massive waterfall." This presents an excellent opportunity for campers to explore another of Yellowstone's stunning natural features, adding a recreational element to their stay.
The reviewer's stay was brief, only one night, but they concluded that it was "pretty cool" overall, despite the fly issue and lack of buffalo sighting during their visit. This suggests that the other aspects of the campground, such as the views and proximity to attractions, outweighed these drawbacks for them.
As for promotional information, none is explicitly provided in the review. However, the implicit promotion lies in the description of the "cool campsite" with "great view over the meadow" and its convenient location near Imperial Geyser and a "massive waterfall." For local users seeking "camping near me" that combines scenic beauty with easy access to popular Yellowstone features, Imperial Meadows Campground offers a compelling option.
Given the open environment, potential for flies (especially in warmer months), and the presence of wildlife like buffalo (at times), it is crucial for potential campers at Imperial Meadows to come prepared. This includes bringing effective insect repellent, sun protection, and being aware of and adhering to all Yellowstone National Park regulations regarding wildlife safety, particularly concerning bears and buffalo. Proper food storage in the provided bear box is essential.
To plan your stay at Imperial Meadows Campground, local users should consult the official Yellowstone National Park website for information on reservations, fees, and any specific advisories or conditions for this particular campsite. Backcountry or less-developed campgrounds may have specific regulations or recommendations that are important to be aware of. Checking the park's website or contacting the park service directly can provide the most up-to-date information on potential insect activity during different times of the year and the likelihood of wildlife sightings in the area.
In conclusion, Imperial Meadows Campground offers a "camping near me" experience in Yellowstone National Park characterized by open meadow views and convenient access to Imperial Geyser and a nearby waterfall hike. While potential issues with flies (especially in summer) and the open, potentially shadeless environment should be considered, the presence of a bear box and the opportunities for scenic enjoyment and exploration of nearby attractions make it a noteworthy option for those seeking a unique Yellowstone camping adventure.

Imperial Meadows Campground Reviews
Was actually a really cool campsite but the flies were pretty damn bad. There was a ton of buffalo pies which I’m sure is what attracted them but we didn’t even get to see any buffalo 😪. Otherwise great view over the meadow. The campsite is really out in the open and there aren’t a whole ton of trees around. There was a bearbox which was pretty nice. I’m sure there’s more buffalo at different times of the year but in early august we did not see any unfortunately. Very close to imperial geyser. Also a close hike to a massive waterfall. Only stayed here one night but it was pretty cool.
