GREAT family campground! Have spent MANY weekends here. The road to it is challenging but I have had no problem with towing my tent trailer in. JUST GO SLOW! The best campsites are on the south side of the campground up against the HUGE granite rock! Avoid the campsites on the east side near the meadow. Too many mosquitos in these sites! - John Boylan

Welcome to Jackass Meadow Campground, a truly remarkable destination for those seeking an authentic outdoor experience in Lakeshore, CA. Situated in the heart of the majestic Sierra National Forest, this campground, managed by recgovnpsdata, offers a serene escape amidst stunning natural beauty. For local users Browse “Camping Near Me,” Jackass Meadow presents an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature, offering a range of activities and an environment that fosters relaxation and adventure.

The environment at Jackass Meadow Campground is defined by its breathtaking setting. Nestled below Florence Lake, the campground is enveloped by the rugged peaks of the John Muir Wilderness. Towering Aspen and Lodgepole Pine trees provide ample shade, creating a cool and inviting atmosphere. The South Fork of the San Joaquin River meanders through the campground, adding to its picturesque charm and providing a soothing soundtrack to your stay. Guests often describe the landscape as incredibly beautiful, a place where sapphire skies meet craggy peaks. The presence of huge granite rocks, particularly on the south side of the campground, adds to the dramatic scenery and offers unique backdrops for campsites. It's a place where you can truly breathe in the views and feel a profound connection to the wilderness. However, it's worth noting that the east side, closer to the meadow, has been reported by some visitors to have more mosquitoes, so choosing a campsite away from the immediate meadow area might enhance your comfort.

When it comes to services and amenities, Jackass Meadow Campground provides essential facilities to ensure a comfortable, albeit rustic, camping experience. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring, and a grill, perfect for enjoying meals outdoors and gathering around a campfire under the stars. Bear-proof food lockers are provided at each site, which is crucial given the active wildlife in the Sierra National Forest, including bears. This ensures the safety of both campers and animals. While potable water is available, some past visitors have noted that the quality can vary, and recommend bringing extra water or purchasing it from nearby facilities. Accessible vault toilets are also on site, catering to convenience without compromising the natural feel. It’s important to note that electric hookups and showers are not available, reinforcing the primitive and immersive nature of the camping experience here. For supplies and groceries, the Florence Lake Store is conveniently located approximately half a mile from the campground, offering necessities like bug repellent and marshmallows, though prices may be higher than in town.

Jackass Meadow boasts an array of features that make it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The campground offers various recreational activities that cater to different interests. Fishing is a popular pastime, with opportunities to cast a line in the South Fork San Joaquin River for trout. The nearby Florence Lake is also renowned for its trout fishing. For hikers, there are numerous trails providing stunning views and access to the vast backcountry of the John Muir Wilderness. A 0.7-mile accessible hiking trail is located near the campground, and nature walks are often held on Saturdays during the summer. A particularly popular activity is taking a ferry from Florence Lake to access the John Muir Trail, which is part of the extensive Pacific Crest Trail. This offers a gateway to some of California’s most iconic wilderness. Boating is also possible at Florence Lake, with boat ramps and rentals available at the Florence Lake Store. Beyond these specific activities, the overall feature of Jackass Meadow is its profound sense of tranquility and remoteness. It's a place where one can truly unwind, disconnect from the daily grind, and reconnect with nature. Wildlife viewing is also a common occurrence, with the forest being home to various species of animals and birds.

For those considering a trip to Jackass Meadow, it's worth noting some practical and promotional information. The road leading to the campground, especially Kaiser Road, can be challenging. It's described as an 18-mile single-lane road with blind curves, huge boulders, minimal pullouts, and rocky or rutted sections. While tent trailers have successfully navigated it by going slow, RVs and motor homes over 25 feet are generally not recommended. Drivers should be prepared for a slow and careful journey, which can take up to two hours for that 18-mile stretch. The campground typically operates from June through September, though exact dates can vary based on weather and snow conditions. It's always advisable to check current conditions and road closures before planning your visit. Fees are generally $26.00 per night for a single site and $52.00 for a double site, with additional vehicle fees for second vehicles and beyond. Jackass Meadow operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are typically not taken, so it’s best to arrive early, especially during peak seasons. The maximum length of stay is 14 days, and group sizes are limited to 6 per site.

Customer reviews highlight the campground's unique appeal. Many families have spent countless weekends here, praising it as a "GREAT family campground" despite the challenging road. The stunning natural beauty, particularly the South Fork San Joaquin River for floating and fishing, and the opportunities for mushroom hunting and hiking, are frequently mentioned as highlights. For some, it’s a place of deep nostalgia, described as "the most beautiful place on earth" and a significant part of their childhood memories. While the natural setting receives overwhelming praise, some common points of feedback include the dustiness of the campsites, the presence of mosquitoes, and the cost of basic amenities like ice and water at the nearby store. Despite these minor inconveniences, the overall sentiment is one of profound appreciation for the peace, beauty, and recreational opportunities that Jackass Meadow offers. It is a place that promises a memorable and immersive wilderness experience for those willing to embrace its rustic charm.
