King Lake State Forest Campground

Covington, MI 49919, USA

4.0
Fantastic campground in the UP of Michigan. There are I believe 6 or 8 total sites and it is first come first serve. I arrived after dark on a Saturday night in mid September and luckily there was one spot available. It is right on King Lake. You drive about 5 miles or so down a one lane dirt road but it’s easily traversed with any vehicle. There is a boat ramp and the spaces are quite large and very private. It is quite primitive but each spot has a picnic table and fire pit. There is a vault toilet bathroom and water pump along with each site having its own trash receptacle. It’s super quiet and peaceful and secluded. 3 of the sites have a lake view but even though mine didn’t it was still a great spot in the woods. - Michael “Wolfy” Howes

King Lake State Forest Campground Introduce

For local users in Michigan's Upper Peninsula searching for "camping near me," King Lake State Forest Campground, located near Covington, MI 49919, USA, offers a unique opportunity for a tranquil and more primitive camping experience. Based on the available customer reviews, this small, first-come-first-serve campground on the shores of King Lake provides a secluded getaway in a natural setting.

One reviewer described it as a "Fantastic campground in the UP of Michigan," immediately highlighting its appeal. The campground is noted to be relatively small, with one review mentioning "I believe 6 or 8 total sites" and another confirming "Nice small campground with 6 sites." This limited number of sites contributes to its secluded and quiet atmosphere. The first-come-first-serve policy means that reservations are not taken, so local users considering a trip should plan accordingly, especially during peak seasons.

The campground's location directly on King Lake is a significant draw. One reviewer who arrived on a Saturday night in mid-September was fortunate to find one spot available right on the lake. This lakefront access suggests opportunities for water-based activities such as boating, kayaking, and canoeing, as noted by one reviewer who wished they had brought their kayaks or a canoe. The presence of a boat ramp further supports the accessibility for those wanting to enjoy King Lake.

Reaching the campground involves a bit of an adventure, as it requires driving "about 5 miles or so down a one lane dirt road." However, the reviewer assures that this road is "easily traversed with any vehicle," making it accessible despite being unpaved. This slightly off-the-beaten-path location contributes to the campground's quiet and secluded ambiance, ideal for local users seeking a peaceful "camping near me" experience away from more crowded areas.

While described as "quite primitive," the campground still offers essential amenities for a comfortable stay. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire pit. There is also a vault toilet bathroom and a water pump available for campers' use. Additionally, each site has its own trash receptacle, making it easier for campers to keep their areas clean. This balance of natural seclusion with basic amenities makes it appealing for those who enjoy a more rustic camping style but still appreciate some conveniences.

The atmosphere of King Lake State Forest Campground is consistently described as "super quiet and peaceful and secluded." This is a major feature for local campers looking to escape the noise and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature. While one reviewer found their site "a bit open for my taste," they also noted that since only three sites were in use, it wasn't a problem. This suggests that even the less private sites benefit from the overall low occupancy, enhancing the sense of peace and quiet.

Three of the campsites are mentioned to have a lake view, which would undoubtedly be highly desirable. However, even the sites without a direct lake view are still described as "great spot in the woods," indicating that the entire campground benefits from a pleasant natural setting. For local users seeking "camping near me" with scenic beauty, the combination of the lake and the surrounding woods offers an attractive environment.

Considering the "environment," King Lake State Forest Campground is situated in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, known for its natural beauty, including forests and lakes. Being right on King Lake provides a waterfront setting with opportunities for boating and enjoying lake views. The secluded location, accessed via a dirt road, enhances the sense of being immersed in nature. The primitive nature of the campground suggests a less developed area, focusing on the natural surroundings rather than extensive facilities. Local users looking for "camping near me" within a pristine forest and lake environment will find this appealing.

In terms of "services," while primitive, the campground offers essential services for a comfortable experience: individual picnic tables and fire pits at each site, a vault toilet bathroom, a water pump for water access, and individual trash receptacles. The presence of a boat ramp is also a significant service for those wishing to use King Lake for boating. Given its nature as a state forest campground, the focus is on providing basic necessities while allowing visitors to enjoy the natural setting. Local campers who prefer a more self-sufficient camping style will appreciate these services.

The "features" of King Lake State Forest Campground include its small size (6-8 sites), its first-come-first-serve availability, its direct access to King Lake with a boat ramp, the large and relatively private campsites, the quiet and secluded atmosphere, and the basic amenities provided at each site (picnic table, fire pit, trash receptacle) along with a vault toilet and water pump. The lake views from some sites are an additional feature. For local users, these features combine to offer a peaceful and nature-oriented "camping near me" option.

Regarding "promotional information," there are no specific promotions mentioned in the reviews. As a state forest campground, information about fees, rules, and regulations would likely be available through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Local users interested in camping here should check the DNR website or contact them directly for details on any required permits or fees. The phone number provided, (906) 353-6558 or +1 906-353-6558, might also be useful for general inquiries, although booking is not available due to the first-come-first-serve policy.

In conclusion, King Lake State Forest Campground offers local users in the Upper Peninsula a fantastic "camping near me" option for a quiet, secluded, and primitive experience right on King Lake. Its small size, lake access, and basic amenities make it ideal for those who appreciate a more natural and less developed camping environment.
