The environment of Lake Superior State Forest Campground is undeniably its primary draw. Located directly on the shores of Lake Superior, campers are treated to spectacular views of the expansive lake, often characterized by its dramatic and ever-changing moods. The "nice big rocky beach" mentioned by a reviewer suggests a shoreline where visitors can enjoy the unique beauty of Lake Superior's coast. Being situated within the Lake Superior State Forest, the campground is surrounded by dense woodlands, offering a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. This vast forest is known for its diverse flora and fauna, providing opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the natural landscapes of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The "beautiful area" noted by a reviewer underscores the scenic appeal of this "camping near me" location for those seeking a true wilderness experience.
The services and features at Lake Superior State Forest Campground are described as basic, emphasizing a more rustic camping experience. According to a review, each campsite is equipped with "nothing but a fire ring and picnic table." This indicates that campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient and bring all necessary camping gear. The campground provides essential sanitation with "3 vault toilets for the whole campground," highlighting that flush toilets and running water are not available at the campsites. This aligns with the nature of many state forest campgrounds that prioritize a natural setting over extensive amenities. The lack of internet service, specifically mentioned for AT&T customers, further reinforces the remote and unplugged nature of this "camping near me" option. Whether this lack of connectivity is viewed as "good" or "bad" is a matter of personal preference, but it underscores the opportunity to truly disconnect and immerse oneself in the natural surroundings.
The features of Lake Superior State Forest Campground are centered around its natural setting and the basic provisions for camping. The direct lake access is a significant feature, allowing for activities like swimming (though Lake Superior's waters can be cold), fishing, and simply enjoying the breathtaking views. The "nice big rocky beach" offers a unique landscape for exploration and relaxation. The presence of a fire ring at each site facilitates campfires for cooking and warmth, while the picnic table provides a designated area for meals and gatherings. The vault toilets offer a basic sanitation solution in the absence of more developed facilities. The first-come, first-served site availability is a key feature of the campground's operation, requiring campers to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. The vastness of the surrounding Lake Superior State Forest offers ample opportunities for hiking and exploring beyond the immediate campground area.
For local users in the Upper Peninsula looking for "camping near me" that offers a genuine escape into nature, Lake Superior State Forest Campground provides a prime opportunity. Its location directly on Lake Superior offers unparalleled access to the lake's beauty and recreational potential. The rustic nature of the campground, with its basic amenities, caters to those who prefer a more traditional and self-sufficient camping experience. The vastness of the surrounding state forest invites exploration and a deeper connection with the natural environment. While the first-come, first-served policy requires some planning and flexibility, the reward is a campsite in a stunning and relatively undeveloped area. The lack of internet service can be seen as a feature for those wanting to disconnect from technology and fully immerse themselves in the tranquility of the Northwoods and the grandeur of Lake Superior.
Promotional information for Lake Superior State Forest Campground is not provided in the reviews. As a state-managed campground, information regarding fees, seasonal availability, and any specific regulations is typically available on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website. Lake Superior State Forest Campground Reviews
My friend and I just returned from 3 night stay. We were unable to get a site the first night, returned early next morning to get one as we observed people were packing up. I get that it's a first come basis. My concern is that there was a site that had a tent set up with no other sign of being utilized with a registration expired. The next day we seen the people come and take down the tent only to put up another pup tent. They then left again and put up another registration covering a few more days. Can't figure out what that is all about! It seemed very wrong considering so many people came through and not being able to get a site. If they paid, I guess there isn't much that can be done. The question is ,did they pay for a site they were not using. The only way to know is if a ranger came daily to confirm payment. Did not see one ranger the whole time we were there. When they were past due and only their tent was there, I feel their tent should have been removed to open up that site for someone else to enjoy.Other than that a beautiful campground, well maintained with clean outhouses and spectacular views and access to the lake.
Sep 13, 2024 · Cordelia OuelletteNice campground right on lake Superior.Nice big rocky beach.Nothing but a fire ring and picnic table at each site. 3 vault toilets for the whole campground. If you want to get away from it all this is the place. No Internet service at least for at&t customers.Good? Bad? You decide.Beautiful area.
Jul 18, 2024 · Barry BladesBeautiful place to rough camp. Just off the beach of Lake Superior. $20 a night. Comes with a very nice fire pit and picnic table. Clean. Be sure to get ice and firewood before you get to your campsite as the prices for the nearest are insane. Example: $8.00 for a small bag of ice. These sites also have two outdoor potties to share, these are very clean.
Jun 02, 2024 · Sarah BienfangThe location is absolutely amazing however, there is currently a horse fly infestation in the campground. Stayed long enough to pay and put up a tent then had to tear down and leave. Had my wife, son and two dogs with me. In the hour we stayed both dogs have blood dripping from their nose and ears. My wife's arms and ankles looks like a topographical map or Utah. My son's left eye is currently swollen shut from the flys bitting around his eye. Beautiful scenery and we will be coming back again. Just not anytime in July.P$. Current date is 07/13/24If you do decide to stay here. The water is nice but the flys are horrible. Best of luck to you
Jul 13, 2024 · Seth EhingerWe didn’t stay..the road was only one way thru and if you met someone going the other way you had to pull over in someone’s site for them to get thru. Most of the sites are small and really made for tents only. Very disappointing after the drive out there.☹️
