My friend and I just returned from 3 night stay. We were unable to get a site the first night, returned early next morning to get one as we observed people were packing up. I get that it's a first come basis. My concern is that there was a site that had a tent set up with no other sign of being utilized with a registration expired. The next day we seen the people come and take down the tent only to put up another pup tent. They then left again and put up another registration covering a few more days. Can't figure out what that is all about! It seemed very wrong considering so many people came through and not being able to get a site. If they paid, I guess there isn't much that can be done. The question is ,did they pay for a site they were not using. The only way to know is if a ranger came daily to confirm payment. Did not see one ranger the whole time we were there. When they were past due and only their tent was there, I feel their tent should have been removed to open up that site for someone else to enjoy.Other than that a beautiful campground, well maintained with clean outhouses and spectacular views and access to the lake. - Cordelia Ouellette

This indicates that campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient and bring all necessary camping gear. The campground provides essential sanitation with "3 vault toilets for the whole campground," highlighting that flush toilets and running water are not available at the campsites. This aligns with the nature of many state forest campgrounds that prioritize a natural setting over extensive amenities. The lack of internet service, specifically mentioned for AT&T customers, further reinforces the remote and unplugged nature of this "camping near me" option. The vault toilets offer a basic sanitation solution in the absence of more developed facilities. The first-come, first-served site availability is a key feature of the campground's operation, requiring campers to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot. The vastness of the surrounding Lake Superior State Forest offers ample opportunities for hiking and exploring beyond the immediate campground area.
