Leesville Lake South Fork Campground Introduce
For local users seeking "camping near me" in the Bowerston, Ohio area, Leesville Lake South Fork Campground, located at 4131 Deer Rd SW, Bowerston, OH 44695, USA, presents a lakeside camping option with a focus on access to Leesville Lake for fishing and boating activities. Based on recent customer reviews, the campground offers scenic views and a good location for lake-related pursuits, but it also has some limitations regarding campsite types, amenities, and availability that potential visitors should be aware of.
Several reviewers commented on the cost of camping at Leesville Lake South Fork Campground. One camper described it as the "most expensive campsite I've been to since hiking 500 miles from the Atlantic in Delaware a month ago," suggesting that the pricing might be higher compared to other primitive camping options in the region. Another reviewer specifically mentioned a cost of "$42 for primitive tent site only," further emphasizing the relatively higher price point for a basic tent camping experience. This reviewer also noted the absence of "shower facilities," which is a significant consideration for those planning longer stays or those who value on-site hygiene amenities.
Despite the cost concerns, one reviewer acknowledged the "very good view" and the "good location for those wishing to go fishing," highlighting the scenic appeal and the campground's suitability for anglers. However, this reviewer, who identified as a thru-hiker on the Buckeye Trail, advised fellow hikers to "suggest finding alternative accommodation options for value for money," reinforcing the perception that the campground might not be the most economical choice for all types of travelers, particularly those on a tight budget or simply needing a basic overnight stop.
Another reviewer provided more detailed insights into the campground's layout and availability. They described it as a "very small campground" with a "first come, walk-in" policy primarily catering to "travel trailers." This reviewer noted that "most of the sites were occupied by seasonal campers," which significantly limits the availability of short-term spots for transient visitors. Their experience of driving down with the expectation of finding a spot only to be disappointed underscores the importance of understanding the limited availability and the prevalence of seasonal residents. However, this reviewer did observe that "there are some great tent sites" and noted "signage that a permit is required" for these sites, suggesting that tent camping is an option, albeit likely with specific regulations.
On a more positive note, the same reviewer highlighted the excellent facilities at the adjacent marina. The marina offers a "kayak launch and a 2 lane boat ramp," providing convenient access to Leesville Lake for boating enthusiasts. The lake itself is described as "beautiful and quiet" with a "10 hp max" motor restriction, indicating a focus on peaceful, non-motorized water activities and slower-paced boating. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking tranquility on the water rather than high-speed water sports like water skiing. The reviewer also noted that the marina is a "nice family place" and offers rentals for "kayaks, paddle boards and pontoon boats," making it accessible even for those who do not have their own equipment. Sharing their personal experience, they "really enjoyed our 10 mile paddle along the south shore" in their own kayaks, further attesting to the lake's suitability for paddling activities.
Based on these reviews, the environment of Leesville Lake South Fork Campground is primarily defined by its proximity to the beautiful and quiet Leesville Lake. The campground offers scenic lake views and provides a convenient location for accessing the lake for fishing and non-motorized boating activities such as kayaking and paddleboarding. The surrounding area likely features the natural landscapes typical of southeastern Ohio.
The services and features of Leesville Lake South Fork Campground, based on the available information, appear to include:
- Primitive Tent Sites: Available, but potentially limited in number and requiring a permit. Priced relatively higher compared to other primitive options and lacking on-site shower facilities.
- Travel Trailer Sites: A small number of sites primarily occupied by seasonal campers, with a first-come, walk-in policy. The availability for short-term stays may be limited.
- Lake Access via Marina: Convenient access to Leesville Lake through the adjacent marina, which features a kayak launch and a 2-lane boat ramp.
- Fishing Opportunities: The location is noted as being good for fishing in Leesville Lake.
- Marina Rentals: The marina offers rentals for kayaks, paddle boards, and pontoon boats, providing options for water-based recreation.
- Quiet Lake Environment: Leesville Lake has a 10 hp motor restriction, ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for boating and paddling.
Key limitations and points to consider include:
- Higher Pricing: Primitive tent sites are reported to be relatively expensive.
- No Shower Facilities: A significant lack of on-site hygiene amenities for tent campers.
- Limited Availability for Travel Trailers: Most sites are occupied by seasonal campers, making short-term spots scarce.
- First-Come, Walk-In Policy: No reservations appear to be accepted, increasing the risk of not finding a site.
- Small Campground: The overall size of the campground is small, further contributing to potential availability issues.
Information regarding other common campground amenities such as restrooms, fire rings, picnic tables, water access at campsites, or waste disposal is not explicitly provided in the reviews. Tent campers should be prepared for a more rustic experience given the "primitive" designation and the lack of showers.
There is no promotional information available in the provided reviews. Local users interested in staying at Leesville Lake South Fork Campground should contact them directly by phone at (740) 269-5371 or +1 740-269-5371 to inquire about current rates, availability for both tent and travel trailer sites, permit requirements for tent camping, and the status of any amenities not mentioned in the reviews. Given the limited short-term availability for travel trailers and the first-come, walk-in policy, it would be wise to call ahead to gauge the likelihood of finding a spot, especially during peak seasons or weekends. Tent campers should also inquire about restroom facilities and water access at the primitive sites.
In conclusion, Leesville Lake South Fork Campground offers a scenic lakeside setting with good access to Leesville Lake for fishing and non-motorized water activities. While the location and lake views are appealing, potential visitors should be aware of the relatively higher cost for primitive tent sites, the lack of shower facilities, and the limited availability for travel trailers due to the prevalence of seasonal campers and the first-come, walk-in policy. The adjacent marina provides valuable amenities such as boat rentals and a launch ramp. For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience focused on lake activities, Leesville Lake South Fork Campground and its marina offer a gateway to enjoying the beautiful and quiet Leesville Lake, but careful planning and direct inquiry are recommended to ensure a suitable and satisfactory stay.

Apr 24, 2024 · Aimer From OrkneyVery small campground. It is first come, walk-in, only for travel trailers. Most of the sites were occupied by seasonal campers. We made the mistake of driving down believing we would find a spot...nope! Looks like there are some great tent sites,; there was signage that a permit is required. On a huge positive note: the marina here has a kayak launch and a 2 lane boat ramp. The lake is beautiful and quiet. 10 hp max. So it's not a place you can water ski. Nice family place. The marina rents kayaks, paddle boards and pontoon boats. We had our own kayaks and really enjoyed our 10 mile paddle along the south shore!
Jun 13, 2019 · Michelle ReeseMike the camp manager was very helpful. Actually lots of season campers were. Gave us a plug to take the 30 amp service down to a 15 amp extension cord for phone charger. You can camp despite what sign says about covid and seasonal campers only. Docks are seasonal campers only. You can tie your boat to a tree and beach it. Launch is very close with a steep ramp. 38 for site with electric and only found bathroom with no shower.
