Little Pool Campground Introduce
For local users in the Hancock, Maryland area and those exploring the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park, Little Pool Campground offers a unique "camping near me" experience. Located in Hancock, MD 21750, this free campsite along the C&O Canal towpath caters primarily to hikers and cyclists traveling the historic route. You can reach the National Park Service, which manages these sites, at (301) 739-4200 or +1 301-739-4200 for general inquiries about the C&O Canal and its campsites, although specific reservations for these free, hiker-biker sites are typically not taken.
Based on the available reviews, Little Pool Campground presents a somewhat rustic and basic camping option. One reviewer humorously notes that if you are looking for a flat campsite, a silent train-less evening, and readily available firewood, this might not be the place for you. This suggests that the terrain could be uneven, train noise might be a factor (common along the canal due to nearby railway lines in some sections), and campers should not rely on foraging for firewood and should plan to bring their own or a means to purchase it elsewhere.
However, the same reviewer indicates that the site "worked for us," albeit requiring "a bit more work to make it comfortable than we wanted after a 65-mile day." This implies that while not perfectly manicured, the campground is functional and can serve as a suitable overnight stop for weary travelers, particularly those on long-distance cycling or hiking trips along the C&O Canal.
Another visitor who stayed at Little Pool in the fall of 2024 as part of a long bike trip provides a more detailed description of the site itself. They found the site to be "reasonable" with a "lot of large open space" and a couple of large trees situated in the center. This description suggests that the campground offers ample room for multiple campers and provides some shade from the trees. For tent users, the reviewer notes that the sites are "simple," implying a relatively undeveloped ground for pitching tents. Hammock users might need to spend some time locating suitable trees with the right spacing and strength to hang their hammocks safely.
The reviewer also points out that Little Pool is "one of the larger ones" among the C&O Canal hiker-biker campsites, offering "plenty of room for a lot of campers." This is a significant advantage, especially during busier times along the towpath, as it increases the likelihood of finding a spot. However, it's important to remember that these are free, first-come, first-served sites, so availability cannot be guaranteed.
A crucial piece of information highlighted in the review is that, like all C&O Canal free sites, the water available is "non-potable." However, the positive aspect is that "the pump worked and can be converted simply to potable water without much effort." This likely refers to a hand pump available at the site, and campers will need to have a water filter or purification method to make the pumped water safe for drinking. This is a standard consideration for those utilizing the free campsites along the C&O Canal.
A significant feature of Little Pool Campground is the "good access to the river at the site," which likely refers to the Potomac River that runs alongside the C&O Canal. The reviewer also mentions that "the views are pretty nice," suggesting a pleasant natural setting with the river as a prominent feature. This access to the river could offer opportunities for fishing (with appropriate licenses and regulations), enjoying the riverside scenery, and the soothing sounds of flowing water.
In terms of services and amenities, as a free, hiker-biker campsite along a National Historical Park towpath, Little Pool Campground is expected to have very basic facilities. Typically, these sites include a water pump (non-potable), a chemical toilet (often a pit toilet), and possibly a picnic table or two. Fire rings might be present, but as noted by one reviewer, firewood is not guaranteed and should be brought in or sourced responsibly outside the immediate campsite area, adhering to park regulations.
Promotional information for free, public-use sites like Little Pool Campground is generally not applicable. These are maintained by the National Park Service as a service to those using the C&O Canal towpath for recreation and travel. Users should consult the official National Park Service website for the C&O Canal National Historical Park for the most up-to-date information on the status of campsites, any temporary closures or advisories, and regulations regarding camping along the towpath.
For local users looking for "camping near me" and seeking a no-cost option with riverside access, Little Pool Campground provides a basic but functional choice. It is particularly well-suited for those engaged in activities along the C&O Canal, such as biking and hiking. However, potential campers should be prepared for potentially uneven terrain, the possibility of train noise, the need to treat the water from the pump to make it potable, and the requirement to bring their own firewood. While not a luxurious or amenity-rich campground, Little Pool offers a convenient and scenic place to rest for those embracing a more self-sufficient outdoor experience along the historic C&O Canal.

Little Pool Campground Reviews
Are you looking for a flat campsite, a silent train less evening, and plenty of firewood to forage? If so, then keep looking because this isn’t the place for you. It worked for us, but was a bit more work to make it comfortable than we wanted after a 65 mile day.
Nov 01, 2024 · Kumar JensenI stayed at Little Pool in the fall of 2024 as part of a long distance bike trip. The site is reasonable with a lot of large open space with a couple of large trees in the center. Tents are simple, hammock users may have to search around a bit. The site is actually one of the larger ones with plenty of room for a lot of campers. Like all C&O free sites the water is non-potable, but the pump worked and can be converted simply to potable water without much effort. There is good access to the river at the site and the views are pretty nice.
Oct 06, 2024 · Brad SpencerWe were about to have a seat on a log, but there was what I think is called a copperhead in a branch above the log.
May 30, 2024 · Christopher ViarPlace is nice clean and level. I improved river access somewhat, but would love to see the NPS set these up for better from water access. Views are great, lots of firewood for now, great hammock trees and the pond next to it is fun to fish. Really a great site. Only 4 stars because I feel water access could be better.
Jun 09, 2017 · Joel NelsonNice campsite. Plenty of space. Far enough away from roads / parking to keep the weekend warrior party crowd and obnoxious National Lampoon's Summer Vacation Clark Griswold types away.
