Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite

Big Pool, MD 21711, USA

3.0
I stayed at Licking Creek in the fall of 2024 as part of a long distance bike trip. The site is on the larger side with a large grass area and trees around the edge. There is a pretty steep hill that you have to go up and down to get to the site and that was hard in a fully loaded bike. There is a lot of privacy from the trail even in the open area. There is some noise from I-70, but I honestly liked the place. The pump worked as expected, but like all free sites on the C&O the water is non-potable. - Brad Spencer

Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite Introduce

Looking for a convenient and potentially free "camping near me" option along your hiking or biking adventure? Consider the Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite, located in Big Pool, MD 21711, USA. This campsite caters specifically to those traveling the C&O Canal Towpath, offering a place to rest and recharge. Based on recent reviews from fellow travelers, Licking Creek provides a unique trailside camping experience with its own set of characteristics.

The Trailside Environment:

Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite is situated directly along the C&O Canal Towpath, making it an ideal stop for long-distance hikers and cyclists. One reviewer who stayed there during a bike trip in the fall of 2024 described the site as being on the larger side, featuring a significant grassy area bordered by trees. This suggests a relatively open camping space with some natural shading and potentially defined boundaries. The proximity to the trail offers easy access for those on foot or bike. However, one important environmental note is the presence of a "pretty steep hill" that one must navigate to reach the site. This was specifically mentioned as challenging for a fully loaded bicycle, so hikers and bikers should be prepared for this elevation change when accessing the campsite. Despite being near the trail, the site reportedly offers "a lot of privacy," even in the open grassy area, which is a significant plus for those seeking a degree of seclusion during their overnight stop.

Another environmental factor to be aware of is the noise from nearby I-70. One reviewer explicitly mentioned that "the sound from the Interstate bridge is extremely loud." While one camper noted this noise but still liked the place, others sensitive to such sounds should take this into consideration. On a more positive note, the presence of Licking Creek itself likely adds to the natural ambiance of the area, although specific details about its accessibility or features from the campsite are not provided in these reviews.

Services and Basic Amenities:

As a free campsite along the C&O Canal, the amenities at Licking Creek are expected to be basic. One reviewer mentioned that "the pump worked as expected," referring to a water pump. However, it's crucial to note the caveat: "like all free sites on the C&O the water is non-potable." Therefore, users should not rely on this water source for drinking without proper treatment. This is a standard condition for the free hiker-biker campsites along the C&O Canal Towpath. Beyond the water pump, the reviews do not specify other amenities such as restrooms, picnic tables, or fire rings. Typically, these hiker-biker sites offer very minimal facilities, focusing on providing a designated space for overnight camping for those traveling the trail.

Given this, hikers and bikers planning to stay at Licking Creek should be self-sufficient, carrying their own shelter, cooking equipment, and water purification supplies. The large grassy area suggests ample space for setting up tents.

Features for Hikers and Bikers:

The primary feature of Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite is its direct accessibility from the C&O Canal Towpath, making it exceptionally convenient for those on multi-day hiking or biking trips. The larger size of the site, with a grassy area and surrounding trees, offers a degree of flexibility in choosing a camping spot. The reported privacy from the trail is another valuable feature, allowing campers to relax without feeling overly exposed. While the steep hill leading to the site presents a challenge, particularly for cyclists with loaded bikes, it also contributes to the separation and potential privacy of the camping area.

The location in Big Pool, MD, places it within the broader context of the C&O Canal National Historical Park, offering access to the historical and natural attractions along the canal. Hikers and bikers can explore the towpath, locks, and other features of the park as part of their journey. Licking Creek serves as a convenient overnight stopping point along this route.

Promotional Information:

Based on the information provided, Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite is described as one of the "free sites on the C&O." This indicates that there is likely no fee to camp at this location, which is a significant benefit for budget-conscious travelers. As a free, trailside campsite, traditional "promotional information" in the sense of discounts or packages is generally not applicable. The primary draw is the convenience and accessibility for those using the C&O Canal Towpath.

For local users who are planning a section hike or bike ride on the C&O Canal and are looking for a "camping near me" option along the way, Licking Creek offers a free and relatively private place to camp. However, they should be aware of the steep hill for access and the noise from I-70. It's also crucial to remember that the water from the pump is non-potable, so carrying or having a plan to obtain potable water is essential.

Summary for "Camping Near Me" Users:

If your search for "camping near me" involves a hike or bike trip along the historic C&O Canal Towpath, Licking Creek Hiker Biker Campsite in Big Pool, MD, provides a free and conveniently located option. The site offers a large grassy area with some privacy from the trail, bordered by trees. Be prepared for a steep hill when accessing the site, especially with a loaded bike, and be aware of potential noise from nearby I-70. While a water pump is available, the water is non-potable, so plan accordingly. Licking Creek serves as a basic yet functional overnight stop for those exploring the scenic and historical C&O Canal.
