Lock 22 Camping Introduce
Are you a local user seeking a "camping near me" destination that caters to a more adventurous and self-sufficient style of outdoor exploration? Lock 22 Camping, located in Sheffield, IL, along the historic Hennepin Canal State Trail, offers a unique camping experience primarily geared towards bike packers, hikers, and those interested in primitive car camping. Based on the available customer reviews, this small camping area provides direct access to the scenic Hennepin Canal and basic amenities for an overnight stay, although potential visitors should be aware of certain limitations.
The environment of Lock 22 Camping is intrinsically linked to its location right on the lock of the Hennepin Canal. The canal itself is described as an "awesome waterway with plenty to see and do," suggesting a rich natural and historical landscape to explore. Campers can expect to be situated alongside this waterway, offering opportunities for scenic views, potential fishing, and access to the Hennepin Canal State Trail for biking and hiking. The surrounding area is described as having "great photo opportunities with some fall colors," indicating its aesthetic appeal, particularly during certain times of the year.
A key feature of Lock 22 Camping is its suitability for specific types of outdoor activities. The first reviewer explicitly states that this is a camping area primarily for "bike packing, maybe hiking or even some primitive car camping." This sets expectations for the type of camping experience available and suggests that it is not designed for large campers or those seeking a more traditional campground setup with extensive amenities. The focus is on providing a convenient overnight stop for those actively exploring the Hennepin Canal State Trail.
The camping area itself is described as "relatively flat and grassy," making it a "pretty nice place to pitch a tent." This basic amenity caters well to bike packers and hikers who typically carry lightweight tents. The presence of "some fire grates and picnic tables" offers essential facilities for cooking and enjoying meals outdoors. However, the limited number of these amenities might be a consideration for larger groups. The reviewer notes that with space for around five couples, the two fire pits and two picnic tables might not be sufficient for everyone if the groups are not acquainted and willing to share.
One significant environmental caveat mentioned is the potential lack of shade. The reviewer points out that "most of the trees are gone and not sure why they didn't replant," leading to the concern that "if it's hot there probably isn't going to be much shade." This is an important factor for campers to consider, especially during the summer months. Bringing adequate sun protection and potentially shade structures might be necessary for a comfortable stay.
In terms of services, the reviews highlight some limitations. Notably, "the water spigot doesn't work," so campers must ensure they bring an adequate supply of water for their needs. The reviewer expresses disappointment with this, attributing it to the state of Illinois. This lack of a functioning water source underscores the primitive nature of the camping experience at Lock 22.
On the positive side, the reviewer mentions that "there is a pit outhouse that was nice and clean." The availability of a clean restroom facility, even a basic one, is a significant convenience for campers. This suggests that while some amenities are lacking, basic hygiene needs are addressed.
The primary draw of Lock 22 Camping appears to be its location directly on the Hennepin Canal, providing immediate access to the waterway and the associated trail. This allows campers to easily resume their biking or hiking journey or to explore the canal for its scenic and recreational opportunities. The reviewer notes that "being right on the lock and having a place to access the Hennepin is what it's for." The Hennepin Canal itself is described as having "plenty to see and do," although the reviewer also mentions that some areas are in need of updating due to funding limitations.
The mention of "cool signage with the maps and info of the Hennepin right off the parking lot that you can't read anymore" suggests that while there was an effort to provide visitor information, maintenance might be lacking. This further reinforces the impression of a more basic, minimally serviced camping area that relies on its natural and historical setting for its appeal.
Based on the reviews, there is no information regarding specific promotional offers or fees associated with camping at Lock 22. As it is located along a state trail, it might be managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and could have minimal or no fees for primitive camping. Local users should check the official website of the Hennepin Canal State Trail or contact the IDNR for any information regarding permits, fees, or regulations for camping at designated areas like Lock 22.
For local users seeking a "camping near me" experience that prioritizes direct access to the Hennepin Canal for bike packing, hiking, or primitive overnight stays, Lock 22 Camping in Sheffield, IL, offers a scenic and convenient location. The flat, grassy area is suitable for tent camping, and basic amenities like fire grates and picnic tables are available, albeit in limited quantities. However, campers must be prepared for the potential lack of shade and the absence of a working water spigot. The presence of a clean pit outhouse is a plus. The primary appeal lies in the immediate access to the "awesome waterway" and the associated recreational opportunities of the Hennepin Canal State Trail.
In conclusion, Lock 22 Camping provides a no-frills "camping near me" option for those looking to explore the Hennepin Canal by bike or foot or to enjoy a primitive overnight stay in a scenic location. While it lacks some of the amenities of more developed campgrounds, its direct access to the canal, relatively flat and clean camping area, and basic facilities make it a suitable choice for self-sufficient travelers. Local users should be aware of the potential for limited shade and the need to bring their own water. For those whose priority is the beauty and accessibility of the Hennepin Canal, Lock 22 Camping offers a convenient and potentially rewarding experience.

Lock 22 Camping Reviews
Understand that this small camping area is for bike packing, maybe hiking or even some primitive car camping. This isn't a campground where you are going to back up to with your camper, string up some lights and get some s'mores on. Being right on the lock and having a place to access the Hennepin is what it's for. The Hennepin is an awesome waterway with plenty to see and do, unfortunately due to the tight wads in the state of Illinois some of the areas of the Hennepin are in need of updating. Like the cool signage with the maps and info of the Hennepin right off the parking lot that you can't read anymore. The camping area is relatively flat and grassy with some fire grates and picnic tables, a pretty nice place to pitch a tent. The caveat is if it's hot there probably isn't going to be much shade since most of the trees are gone and not sure why they didn't replant. Be aware the water spigot doesn't work so hopefully you have brought enough water, again thank you state of Illinois. There is a pit outhouse that was nice and clean. All and all not a bad place to get off the bike and catch some z's and look at the stars.
Dec 20, 2022 · Ron LarsonIt was a chilly October evening but we stopped and captured some photos. Great photo opportunities with some fall colors.
Oct 16, 2022 · Sean FlynnHubby and I were bike touring the Hennepin and feeder canals. We camped at Lock 23, but we wanted to check out Lock 22 for the future. Do NOT expect water here. (as the IDNR brochure map shows.) There is a spigot but...The raccoon that fried in the well pump box is still there. Exactly like you see cartoon skeletons when they bite hot wires. It's been there a longgggg while. The pit toilets building is a nice structure but doesn't appear to have been swept out since the spring. And no TP, bring your own. Primitive camping here would be okay. The grounds are pleasant, although not shady. It's a long distance from I-80,so no highway noise(unlike Lock 23 cg)
Jun 05, 2024 · Ben SlowThe Hennepin canal lock 22 was alway a great place for camping the weekend. Plenty good fishing through the past 40 years. I visited 4/8/24 eclipse day and it has changed a little but it looks very nice still.
Apr 08, 2024 · Walter LongMy favorite place to get away and camp. Fish too. For under 10 dollars a night.
