Loristica Group Campground

Forest Rd 833, Mackay, ID 83251, USA

4.0
We stayed at this campground for five nights in the middle of June 2024. This is a beautiful area with plenty of options for camping in the sun and the shade. There are several fire pits and picnic tables circling the loop. The drive up to the campground can get pretty steep and the roads have occasional erosion, potholes, and washboards. A large motorhome would not make it to this campground but a smaller one could. The trail around the loop is also relatively rough. I rode my mountain bike around the loop a few times and I had to dodge a lot of rocks and erosion rills.Because this campground is at 8,000 feet above sea level, expect to get winded easily. I'm not in bad shape, but every time I rode my bike, ran, or hiked uphill, I found myself breathing pretty heavily.Water comes and goes at this campground, so be careful where you make camp. I parked my RV in a nice spot only to discover a day later that there was a little creek running underneath.I gave this four stars because of the access. I don't think this place is for everyone, especially if your vehicle doesn't the ability to climb and handle a lot of bumps. - Dustin Heath

Loristica Group Campground Introduce

For local residents and outdoor groups in the Mackay, Idaho area searching for "camping near me," Loristica Group Campground, located on Forest Rd 833, Mackay, ID 83251, USA, offers a potentially beautiful and well-suited destination for group camping. You can reach them at (208) 756-5100 or their mobile number +1 208-756-5100 for inquiries, although reservations for US Forest Service group campgrounds are typically handled through Recreation.gov.

Based on recent customer reviews, the environment of Loristica Group Campground is highly praised. One camper who stayed for five nights in mid-June 2024 described the area as "beautiful" with "plenty of options for camping in the sun and the shade," indicating a varied landscape within the campground itself. The presence of "several fire pits and picnic tables circling the loop" suggests that the campground is designed to accommodate groups comfortably, providing essential amenities for communal gatherings and outdoor cooking. Another reviewer simply stated, "Beautiful Campground," reinforcing the scenic appeal of the location.

However, it's crucial for potential visitors to be aware of the access challenges highlighted in one of the reviews: "The drive up to the campground can get pretty steep and the roads have occasional erosion, potholes, and washboards. A large motorhome would not make it to this campground but a smaller one could." This indicates that the road leading to Loristica Group Campground may be unpaved and in somewhat rough condition, potentially posing difficulties for larger or low-clearance vehicles. While smaller motorhomes might be able to access the campground, those with large RVs should likely consider alternative locations. It is strongly recommended to inquire about the current road conditions with the US Forest Service or check recent reports before attempting to drive to the campground, especially with larger vehicles.

Another environmental factor to consider is the campground's high elevation: "Because this campground is at 8,000 feet above sea level, expect to get winded easily." This is an important health consideration, especially for individuals not accustomed to high altitudes or those with respiratory conditions. Even those in good physical shape might find themselves breathing more heavily during physical activity. It's advisable to take it easy upon arrival, stay hydrated, and be mindful of the effects of the higher elevation.

One review also mentions a unique environmental feature and a potential hazard: "Water comes and goes at this campground, so be careful where you make camp. I parked my RV in a nice spot only to discover a day later that there was a little creek running underneath." This suggests that there might be intermittent or subsurface water flow in certain areas of the campground, which could lead to unexpected wet conditions or even flooding in specific spots. Campers should exercise caution when selecting their campsite and be aware of any signs of past or present water flow.

In terms of services and features, based on the reviews and the fact that it is a US Forest Service group campground, we can infer some likely amenities:

  • Group Campsites: As the name suggests, the campground is designed for group camping, likely offering larger designated areas that can accommodate multiple tents or smaller RVs (keeping in mind the access road limitations).
  • Fire Pits: The mention of "several fire pits" indicates designated areas for campfires, which are essential for group gatherings and cooking. Campers should always adhere to fire regulations and check for any restrictions.
  • Picnic Tables: The presence of "picnic tables circling the loop" suggests that each group site or common area is equipped with tables for dining and other activities.
  • Vault Toilets: US Forest Service campgrounds in more remote locations typically have vault toilets (pit toilets) rather than flush restrooms.
  • Water: The review noting the fluctuating water suggests that a reliable potable water source might not be consistently available. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water or have a plan for purification if relying on natural sources (if permitted and available). It's crucial to verify water availability before your trip.
  • Trash Disposal: US Forest Service campgrounds often have designated trash receptacles, and campers are expected to pack out everything they pack in where services are limited.
  • Hiking Opportunities: The mention of a "trail around the loop" and the beautiful surrounding area suggests potential for hiking, although one reviewer noted that the trail is "relatively rough" for mountain biking with rocks and erosion rills. Hikers should be prepared for uneven terrain.

To obtain the most accurate and up-to-date information about Loristica Group Campground, local users searching for "camping near me" should:

  • Visit Recreation.gov: Search for Loristica Group Campground in the Boise National Forest on the Recreation.gov website or app to check availability, make reservations (group sites often require reservations), and view details about amenities and fees.
  • Contact the Boise National Forest Ranger District (Mackay area): Call the general information number or the specific contact for the Mackay Ranger District to inquire about current road conditions, water availability, group site capacities, and any specific regulations for the campground.
  • Check for alerts and closures: The Boise National Forest website or Recreation.gov will have information on any temporary closures, fire restrictions, or other important alerts affecting the campground.

Regarding promotional information, US Forest Service campgrounds typically do not offer specific "promotions" in the way private campgrounds might. Fees are generally standardized based on the group site capacity and amenities offered. However, it's always worth checking the Recreation.gov website for any potential seasonal discounts or special programs that might apply to group camping.

In conclusion, Loristica Group Campground near Mackay, Idaho, appears to be a beautiful and well-equipped option for group camping in the Boise National Forest. The presence of ample shade and sun options, fire pits, and picnic tables makes it ideal for communal outdoor experiences. However, potential visitors must be aware of the challenging access road, the high altitude, and the potentially variable water situation. While the aggressive mosquitos mentioned by one reviewer are a natural element of the outdoors, being prepared with insect repellent is advisable. For local groups seeking a scenic and accommodating "camping near me" destination, Loristica Group Campground is worth considering, provided they have vehicles suitable for the terrain and are prepared for the environmental conditions. Thoroughly checking official sources for the latest information and making reservations well in advance are highly recommended.
