MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND Introduce
For those in search of a "camping near me" experience that emphasizes privacy and a connection with nature in the Mad River area of California, MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND, located on Lower Mad River Rd, Mad River, CA 95552, USA, presents an intriguing option. This campground appears to offer a more secluded and less crowded camping environment, appealing to individuals and small groups seeking tranquility. You can reach them at (707) 574-6233 or +1 707-574-6233 for inquiries about availability and specific site details.
The environment surrounding MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND is characterized by its natural setting along the Mad River. The presence of the river suggests opportunities for riverside camping, with at least a couple of sites reportedly located directly on the riverbank. This offers the potential for scenic views and the soothing sounds of flowing water, enhancing the overall camping experience. The general area of Mad River is known for its forested landscapes and natural beauty, providing a backdrop of trees and potentially wildlife. One reviewer also mentions the proximity of Ruth Lake, a "big huge beautiful lake," despite a large burn in the area the previous year. This suggests that campers at MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND have access to a larger body of water for recreational activities such as fishing and enjoying lake views, although it's noted that other campgrounds closer to the lake might offer direct lake view access. The availability of a day-use area past the campgrounds and a marina, offering lake access with shade and sun, further expands the environmental attractions for those staying at MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND.
The services and features at MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND seem to be basic yet functional, catering to a more rustic camping experience. One key piece of information is the affordable nightly rate of $12. The campground provides chlorine-treated drinking water, which is a significant convenience for campers. Essential facilities such as toilets and garbage disposal are also available on-site, contributing to a more comfortable and environmentally responsible camping experience. The reviewer who stayed on a Sunday afternoon noted being the only camper present, with no apparent on-site monitoring except for morning trash removal, highlighting the potential for a very private and unmanaged feel. While this can be appealing for some, it's worth noting the lack of active supervision. The mention of other campgrounds down the road having "running water only" suggests that MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND, by comparison, offers at least treated drinking water at designated points, and the toilets are likely vault toilets rather than flush toilets given the "only" distinction of running water elsewhere.
A significant feature of MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND is the sense of privacy it offers, particularly during less busy times. The reviewer specifically chose to return to this campground for its privacy, indicating that it provides a more secluded experience compared to other nearby options. The availability of a couple of sites right on the river is another notable feature, offering a unique camping experience with direct access to the waterway. For those interested in fishing, the proximity to Ruth Lake is a definite plus, with one reviewer reporting catching a good-sized silver salmon. The day-use area near the marina, accessible to those staying at MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND, provides further lake access with the added benefits of shade and sunny spots suitable for solar power, as well as a location where fishing has been successful.
Promotional information for MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND is limited. The price of $12 per night is itself a significant draw, indicating a very affordable "camping near me" option. There is no mention of any discounts for longer stays, seniors, or other groups. The value proposition seems to be centered on the low cost and the potential for a private camping experience in a natural setting with basic amenities provided. The fact that the campground was nearly empty on a Sunday afternoon in the shoulder season (implied by the late summer fishing success) might suggest that it is less heavily trafficked than other campgrounds in the area, potentially offering a more spontaneous "camping near me" option without the need for extensive advance booking, although this could vary depending on the time of year and local events.
The directions provided by one reviewer, noting that the day-use area might be easy to miss ("You have to kind of look for it or you might miss it like I did"), suggest that while the campground itself is located on Lower Mad River Road, specific points of interest like the prime fishing spot at the day-use area require a bit of exploration to find. This adds a sense of discovery for those willing to venture slightly beyond the immediate campground. The mention of other campgrounds nearby with lake view access indicates that while MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND itself might not offer these views directly from all sites, the proximity to the lake and its recreational opportunities is a significant benefit for those staying here.
In conclusion, MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND offers a budget-friendly "camping near me" option in a natural setting along the Mad River in California. Its key features include a low nightly rate of $12, the provision of chlorine-treated drinking water, on-site toilets and garbage disposal, and the potential for a very private camping experience, especially during off-peak times. The availability of a couple of riverside campsites and the proximity to the beautiful Ruth Lake, with its fishing opportunities and accessible day-use area, enhance its appeal. While the campground appears to offer basic amenities and a less managed environment, its affordability and potential for solitude make it an attractive choice for those seeking a more rustic and private "camping near me" getaway in the Mad River region.

MAD RIVER CAMPGROUND Reviews
12$ per night. Chlorine treated drinking water provided. Toilets and garbage on site.
Aug 24, 2024 · BrookeVery few people here. I pulled in on Sunday afternoon I was the only one here. Nobody monitoring the campground except for emptying the trash in the morning. There are a couple campgrounds down the road one with a lake view access. Toilets and running water only. Couple sites right on the river. I came back here for the privacy. Ruth lake just down the road a big huge beautiful lake despite the large burn last year. Caught a good size silver salmon. There's a day use area past the campgrounds and Marina to the right which you have access to the lake with shade and Sun for solar which is where I caught my fish awesome place. You have to kind of look for it or you might miss it like I did .

Sep 06, 2016 · JacobI camped here with a small group. We were the only campers around which was nice. There was easy river access, lots of poison oak around. The bathroom closest to our camp site was just awful. Others were fine but it was a little walk. If you want to get into the river bring water shoes because there are rocks. Great fun all around just the bathroom was a turn off.
