Wolden Recreation Area Introduce
Are you searching for "camping near me" in the Estherville, Iowa area? Look no further than the Wolden Recreation Area, located at 1744 360th Ave, Estherville, IA 51334, USA. This campground offers a space for both van parking/tent camping and appears to accommodate RVs as well, making it a potential option for various camping preferences. Let's delve into what you can expect from this local camping spot based on available information.
From a natural environment perspective, the reviews indicate that the camping sites at Wolden Recreation Area are primarily grass. This suggests a more natural, perhaps softer ground for tent pitching compared to gravel pads. While the reviews don't extensively detail the surrounding landscape, the mention of it being a "fairly quiet campground" hints at a potentially peaceful environment, away from significant noise pollution. If you appreciate a quieter setting for your camping experience, this could be a point in its favor.
In terms of services and features, the information provided points to the availability of electricity at the campsites. This is a significant convenience for those wanting to power devices or use appliances during their camping trip. Additionally, one reviewer mentioned being close to a water faucet, suggesting that access to water for filling up tanks or other needs is available, at least in certain areas of the campground. However, it's important to note that the review explicitly states "just electricity," implying that other hookups like sewer might not be standard at all sites. Campers planning to bring RVs should consider this and potentially inquire further about specific site amenities.
Considering the features of the campground, the reviews offer a mixed perspective. On the positive side, the relative quietness of the campground is highlighted as an advantage. This could appeal to individuals and families seeking a more tranquil outdoor experience. However, some practical aspects seem to present challenges. Several reviews mention that the sites are "not as spacious as one would like," which could mean limited room for setting up larger tents, awnings, or enjoying a significant amount of personal space between campsites. Furthermore, accessibility appears to be a concern, with remarks about it being "tight getting into your spot" and a "very tight squeeze at both entrances of the campground," especially for those with larger vehicles or "big rigs." Potential visitors with larger RVs or trailers should exercise caution and perhaps inquire about the ease of access and the size of individual campsites before booking.
Now, let's address some of the less positive feedback from recent visitors. One particularly concerning review details an experience of alleged harassment by the local county sheriff, seemingly based on the camper not having a tent or RV despite having paid for a van parking/tent area and not violating any rules. This individual reported feeling "targeted" and "profiled," especially as they had out-of-county license plates. This is a serious accusation and something potential visitors might want to be aware of. It's important to note that this is just one person's experience, but it does raise questions about the interactions some visitors might have with local authorities in the area.
Another point raised by the same reviewer is the perceived discrimination against vehicles with out-of-county plates. While this is anecdotal, it's a factor that might make some travelers feel uneasy. The reviewer's contrasting experience between a late 2022 visit (which was enjoyed for its quietness) and an early 2023 visit (the negative one) suggests that the experience at the campground might vary.
In summary, Wolden Recreation Area offers a potentially quiet camping environment in Estherville, Iowa, with the benefit of electric hookups and nearby water access. However, prospective campers should be aware that the sites might be less spacious, and access can be challenging, particularly for larger vehicles. Additionally, recent feedback includes a serious allegation of harassment by local law enforcement, which potential visitors might want to consider alongside the positive aspects of the campground's tranquility. As a platform focused on "camping near me," we aim to provide a comprehensive view based on available information, allowing you to make informed decisions for your outdoor adventures.
For local users in the "camping near me" category, Wolden Recreation Area presents itself as a no-frills option focused on providing basic amenities like electricity in a potentially quieter setting. If you prioritize a peaceful atmosphere and don't require extensive site space or hookups beyond electricity, this could be a viable choice. However, it would be prudent to consider the recent negative experiences shared by a visitor regarding interactions with local authorities and the challenges with site size and campground access, especially if you are traveling from outside the county or with a larger vehicle. We encourage you to weigh these factors when deciding if Wolden Recreation Area aligns with your camping needs.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Wolden Recreation Area online. To inquire about availability, pricing, or any specific concerns you might have (such as site dimensions or access for larger vehicles), it would be best to contact the campground directly, if contact information is publicly available. When searching for "camping near me," it's always a good practice to look for the most up-to-date information and consider a range of reviews to get a well-rounded understanding of what to expect. We hope this detailed introduction helps you in your search for the perfect local camping spot.

Wolden Recreation Area Reviews
I'm so angry! I paid for a peaceful van parking/tent area and was harassed on two different occasions by the local county sheriff! They came out because I, a 61 year old grandmother didn't have a tent up or RV! No rules were violated!!!Wasn't even playing any music, yelling, making any noise whatsoever!!!I was targeted, profiled the first night as suspicious! Seriously?? Two days later, again, the same deputy came out told me it was for the same reason!! I informed him, I was going to file harassment, and he turned and left!!Seems to be a discrimination against any plates outside of the county! This was my second stay. The first one was at the end of 2022 season. This disgusting one was opening season 2023! The first one was actually quiet, enjoyed it. Hence the return!
May 28, 2023 · Gail AyresAll sites seem to be just grass, no gravel. Also, just electricity, but we were close to a water faucet to fill up.The sites aren't as spacious as one would like, but it is a fairly quiet campground. Give and take.It can be tight getting into your spot. It's also a very tight squeeze at both entrances of the campground, so be careful if you have a big rig.
