Maine Blackwater Outfitters Introduce
For local users in search of "camping near me" with a specific interest in guided hunting experiences, particularly bear hunting in Maine, Maine Blackwater Outfitters, located at 1670 Masardis Road, Masardis, ME 04732, USA, presents a potential option. You can reach them at (207) 540-4101 or +1 207-540-4101 to inquire about their services and availability. Based on recent customer reviews, the outfitter appears to offer guided bear hunts and cabin accommodations.
One reviewer who participated in a bear hunt in September 2024 with their 12-year-old son provided a detailed account of their experience. On the positive side, they noted that the cabins were "very clean" and the food was "very good." They also mentioned that Dick, presumably one of the guides, was knowledgeable about bear hunting. This suggests that Maine Blackwater Outfitters provides a certain level of comfort in terms of lodging and meals for their clients.
However, this same reviewer also raised several significant concerns that prospective clients should be aware of. These concerns led to a one-star rating for the trip. Firstly, the reviewer mentioned an incident where Dick allegedly made a negative comment about the reviewer's son's sniffing due to allergies, stating he couldn't hear the dogs. This could indicate a lack of sensitivity or patience towards clients, particularly those with medical conditions.
Secondly, the reviewer noted that Dick cursed "an extreme amount," which might be a consideration for individuals or families with children who prefer a more professional or less profane environment. Additionally, the reviewer stated that all the vehicles they were in smelled of marijuana, which could be a concern for those sensitive to such odors or who have legal restrictions or personal preferences regarding cannabis use.
A serious safety concern was also raised, with the reviewer, an 18-year law enforcement officer, stating that Dick drove over 80 mph on a two-lane road. This behavior could be alarming for clients prioritizing safety during their experience.
Another significant issue reported was related to guide licensing. On the fourth day of the hunt, it was discovered that Dick and another guide apparently did not have their guide licenses. This resulted in a delay of several hours while another licensed guide had to be called in, nearly causing the clients to miss a day of hunting. The reviewer noted that this was reportedly a recurring issue and that there seemed to be no contingency plan in place, indicating potential organizational problems.
Furthermore, the reviewer recounted an incident where Dick allegedly beat his dogs in front of the reviewer's son for chasing what Dick initially thought was a moose, but later determined was not. Such behavior towards animals, especially in the presence of children, could be deeply disturbing for some individuals.
Finally, the reviewer mentioned that Dick made a comment suggesting that their son might not enjoy hunting, despite the son having hunted since the age of four and never complaining during the trip. This could indicate a lack of understanding or misjudgment of clients' interests and experiences.
In contrast to this negative experience, another reviewer described their first bear hunt with Maine Blackwater Outfitters as one they would repeat. They praised Dickey, Cole, and Josh as "amazing" and knowledgeable about Maine black bears. This reviewer highlighted the guides' dedication to baiting and setting up hunting spots. They also mentioned Dickey's 30 years of experience as a significant factor in the outfitter's success and claimed to have learned a great deal about bears during their six-day trip. This positive review also complimented the "amazing" food, the clean cabins with TV and internet, and the services of Mike, the butcher, who prepared the harvested meat. This reviewer enthusiastically recommended Maine Blackwater Outfitters for a "great experience."
Considering these two contrasting reviews, local users searching for "camping near me" with an interest in a guided bear hunting experience at Maine Blackwater Outfitters should weigh the positive feedback regarding knowledgeable guides, good food, and clean cabins against the serious concerns raised about professionalism, safety, potential legal issues (guide licensing), and treatment of animals. It is important to recognize that experiences can vary, and these two reviews offer different perspectives on what a trip with this outfitter might entail.
Currently, there is no specific promotional information available in the provided reviews. Potential clients would need to contact Maine Blackwater Outfitters directly at the provided phone numbers to inquire about pricing, availability for guided hunts or cabin rentals, any package deals, or seasonal promotions they might be offering. It would also be prudent to ask about their guiding credentials, safety protocols, and policies regarding client interactions and the treatment of animals.
In conclusion, Maine Blackwater Outfitters offers guided bear hunts and cabin accommodations in Masardis, Maine, catering to those specifically seeking this type of outdoor experience near them. While some clients have reported positive experiences with knowledgeable guides, good food, and clean lodging, others have raised significant concerns regarding professionalism, safety, guide licensing, and treatment of animals. Local users considering this outfitter should carefully consider these contrasting viewpoints and conduct thorough due diligence by contacting Maine Blackwater Outfitters directly with specific questions and concerns before making a booking decision. It is essential to ensure that the outfitter's practices and standards align with your expectations and values for a safe, ethical, and enjoyable hunting or camping experience.

Maine Blackwater Outfitters Reviews
My son age 12 and I went on a bear hunt September of 2024. The cabins were very clean and the food was very good. Dick was knowledgeable however actions made this trip a 1 star. I'll start off to say I am an avid hunter and have been on many hunting trips from Montana to South Carolina to Ohio and points in between.... my son has also killed many whitetail deer, wild boar hogs and many other animals. First off my son has allergies and sniffs a great deal during allergy season which was in during the trip, at one point Dick told another guide "I can't hear the dogs because the kid is sniffing". Dick also cursed an extreme amount which wasn't a terrible thing because I do as well at times. All of the vehicles we were in smelled of Marijuana. At one point Dick traveled on the two lane road at over 80 mph. I've been a law enforcement officer over 18 years and this was concerning. My son was able to harvest a bear and I should have but messed up the shot which is hunting and had no effect on this review. Day 4 of the hunt Dick had a issue that is apparently reoccurring according to his son and the other guide.... they did not have their guide license therefore another guide had to be called which took hours and there was no plan in place for the occurrence and we nearly had to miss a day of hunting. Dick also beat his dogs in front of my son for chasing a moose which Dick later determined it wasn't chasing a moose. At one point Dick said "maybe this wasn't a thing for your son he doesn't like hunting". This came after we stopped and Dick ran through the woods and we followed...my son never complained etc. Again my son has hunted since he was 4 and loves it. I would not recommend this outfitter especially for children.
Jan 04, 2025 · Eric RussellMy first bear hunt, but want be my last! Dickey,Cole, Josh were amazing! These guys know Maine Black bear, they were busy every day putting out bait, setting up future spots for hunters! Dickey has been in business for 30 years, his knowledge and experience is what makes Black water hunters so successful! I learned more about bears in 6 days that I had in 50 years. From their ability to see movement to their nose which is 7 times better than bloodhound. The food was amazing I gained 5 lbs, nice clean cabins with TV and Internet. Mike is awesome butcher my taxidermist was happy, meat was quartered and ready to cut up or bag and carry home in cooler! Maybe I'll get moose tag in 25. Anyway if you want great experience call Blackwater outfitters you want be disappointed!
Sep 06, 2024 · jeff sellsWe had a group of 10 with 2 twelve year olds that participated in the Saturday youth hunt. Dickie, Cole, Josh and the rest of the team did a great job of putting everyone but one person (he isn’t very quiet) in front of a bear. The food was excellent, the cabins and accommodations were better than expected and we felt like we were treated like family. Good times around the bonfire and enjoying the company of everyone and the dogs. We had 3 other hunters at camp, not part of our group, and they were great company as well. This baited hunt took place in 2024 and we plan on doing a hound hunt in 2026. If one of the party wasn’t getting married in 2025 we would have been there then. One of the party has started getting moose application points. We had time to go fishing on Scopan Lake and shot some clays as well. Highly recommended.
Sep 03, 2024 · Steve PrallAlthough I was unsuccessful in my hunt it wasn't for lack of efforts on blackwater outfitters staff. They did everything possible to make it a successful hunt, the cabins were great and Gloria did a fabulous job in the kitchen serving us our meals.
Sep 08, 2024 · michael graverGroup of 4 we went to bear hunt and all we can say is wow! We're to begin, the cabins wer awesome . The food with the cook and her husband, if you went hungry that would have been your own fault. It's like going to grandma's house morning noon and night! Dicky's spaghetti and burgers and fries the best! Now for the hunt was an adventure to say the least. They go out of there way to get you on a bear and the rest is up to you. Dicky and Cole and Mike all I can say is the best! Now for the dogs awesome. Can't come soon enough for next year. Thank you from "BUSHWACKERS "
