Maple Grove Campground Introduce
For local users in the Wahkon, Minnesota area searching for "camping near me," Maple Grove Campground, located on County Rd 34 in Wahkon, MN 56386, presents a camping option with a mix of positive and negative feedback from recent visitors. To provide an objective introduction, it's crucial to consider all aspects of the environment, services, and features as described in the available reviews.
The environment surrounding Maple Grove Campground appears to be closely associated with the natural beauty of the region, particularly its proximity to Father Hennepin State Park and Mille Lacs Lake. One reviewer mentioned that a "beach a few minutes drive away" was "gorgeous," and another noted the presence of "trails nice to hike" and "beaches around the lake were fun to walk alongside." They also highlighted a "great swim beach at the park," indicating that access to lake activities is a significant environmental feature for campers at Maple Grove. This suggests that the campground benefits from the scenic landscapes and recreational opportunities offered by the nearby lake and state park, making it appealing for those who enjoy hiking, beach outings, and potentially swimming.
However, not all aspects of the environment received positive feedback. One camper who visited in early July 2023 described their camping experience as a "nightmare with the amount of bugs that came out at night." They further noted "thousands of dead bugs," suggesting a potentially significant insect issue during certain times of the year. This is a crucial environmental factor that local users should be aware of when considering a stay at Maple Grove Campground, particularly during the summer months.
In terms of services, the reviews offer a mixed perspective. One positive aspect highlighted by a camper who stayed over the 4th of July weekend was that "the bathrooms were close and cleaned daily." This indicates a basic but essential service is maintained. Additionally, they noted that "the wood for sale was sheltered so it stayed dry to help with fire starting," which is a thoughtful amenity for campers wanting to enjoy campfires. However, another reviewer mentioned only "1 working bathroom stall and minimal showers," suggesting that the restroom facilities might be limited and potentially insufficient, especially during busier periods. This discrepancy in reviews regarding the bathroom situation warrants consideration.
The layout of the campsites is also a factor to consider. One reviewer who stayed at site 66 commented that "campsites are really close to each other with minimal privacy." This suggests that some or all of the sites might offer a less secluded camping experience, which could be a drawback for those seeking more space and privacy. On the other hand, the same reviewer noted a "strict 10:30pm quiet hours," which, while potentially restrictive for some, can be a positive feature for those seeking a peaceful night's sleep, especially given the reported bug issues that make being outside after dark "unbearable" for some.
The features of Maple Grove Campground seem to be closely tied to its location near Father Hennepin State Park and Mille Lacs Lake. The access to hiking trails and beaches has already been mentioned as significant features. The presence of a "great swim beach at the park" is another key feature for those interested in swimming and enjoying the lake. The availability of firewood for sale on-site is a convenient feature for campers wanting to have campfires. However, the limited number of working bathroom stalls and minimal showers, as reported by one reviewer, could be considered a negative feature for some campers who prioritize these amenities.
Promotional information is not explicitly provided in the reviews. However, the positive experiences shared by some campers, such as enjoying the 4th of July weekend despite not having electricity, and the appreciation for the clean bathrooms and sheltered firewood, can be seen as indirect endorsements. The mention of the proximity to the "gorgeous" beach and the "great swim beach at the park" also serves as a promotion for the location's natural attractions. Conversely, the negative feedback regarding the bug infestation and limited bathroom facilities acts as a cautionary note for potential visitors. Local users considering Maple Grove Campground should weigh these contrasting experiences when making their decision.
One reviewer's comment, "It's a great place for a day trip but I do not recommend staying the night," is a strong piece of feedback that local users might find particularly relevant. This suggests that the campground might be better suited for short visits to enjoy the nearby lake and park amenities rather than extended overnight stays, possibly due to the issues with bugs and limited facilities. However, the positive experience of the camper who stayed over the 4th of July weekend indicates that some visitors have had enjoyable overnight stays, particularly if they are prepared for potential limitations like the absence of electricity at some sites (as this reviewer booked late) and the need to manage expectations regarding privacy and bathroom availability.
For local users considering Maple Grove Campground, it is advisable to contact them directly at (320) 676-8763 or +1 320-676-8763 to inquire about the current conditions, particularly regarding bug levels and the status of the bathroom facilities. Asking about campsite availability, privacy levels, and any specific amenities offered at individual sites would also be beneficial. Given the mixed reviews, direct communication with the campground management can provide the most up-to-date and accurate information to help local campers make an informed decision about their "camping near me" experience.

Maple Grove Campground Reviews
I went in early July. 2023 and camping was a nightmare with the amount of bugs that came out at night. Campsites are really close to each other with minimal privacy (stayed at site 66). Strict 10:30pm quiet hours which is fine since being outside after dark is unbearable with the bugs anyways. Only 1 working bathroom stall and minimal showers. Thousands of dead bugs. It's a great place for a day trip but I do not recommend staying the night. We drove to a beach a few minutes drive away and that was gorgeous!
Jul 13, 2023 · Jess BreheimWe really enjoyed our camping experience here over the 4th, even without electricity available. (We decided too late for a busy holiday weekend to book one) The bathrooms were close and cleaned daily. The wood for sale was sheltered so it stayed dry to help with fire starting. Even though it was a holiday weekend it was still quiet and peaceful. The trails were nice to hike and the beaches around the lake were fun to walk alongside! We didn't swim this time but they do have a great swim beach at the park! I look forward to heading to Father Hennepin again!
Jul 09, 2022 · Autumn MolletThis is the better of the two campgrounds at Father Hennepin State Park. You are near the beach and connecting trails and very near Mille Lacs Lake. The sites are fairly spread out, and shaded and seam to be semi secluded. This is the option to avoid camping crowds.
Jul 01, 2023 · Wyatt W. PenkeCame here at the end of September with our pop up. Even with the rain all weekend the site was beautiful and the colors were awesome! The walking paths are great and right along the lake. We will be back!
Sep 27, 2020 · Allison AThe place is beautiful, the beach in the lake is great despite of the flies and is near the campground, with picnic tables. But the campsites are full of mosquitoes, the bug spray doesn't work! Also a lot of spiders climbing in the tent... But it's nature!
