One reviewer who stayed at an electric site in mid-July provided valuable insights into the natural environment and wildlife of Petaga Campground. They noted the abundance of mosquitoes and horse flies during that time of year, emphasizing the need for strong insect repellent and even suggesting mosquito head nets for those planning to venture onto the wooded trails. Despite the insect activity, the reviewer described the area as "very beautiful" and highlighted the diverse wildlife encountered, including various types of butterflies and songbirds, chipmunks, red squirrels, loons, owls, hawks, a large garter snake, toads, and numerous leopard and pickerel frogs near the swimming pond. The presence of milkweeds along the roads and paths is also a positive indicator of a healthy ecosystem supporting pollinators.
The reviewer also shared an important experience regarding nocturnal wildlife. Being their first time camping in the north, they were initially unprepared for scavengers and had food raided by raccoons and potentially bears after leaving it unsecured in their netted tent. This serves as a crucial reminder for all campers in the area to properly secure food in vehicles or bear-resistant containers to avoid attracting wildlife. The reviewer noted that after securing their food in their truck, the raccoons returned but left without finding anything, and they could hear a bear attempting to access the dumpster nearby.
In terms of facilities, the reviewer specifically mentioned the "shower building" as being "very well kept up," with cleaning occurring 2-3 times a day. This indicates a commitment to hygiene and guest comfort. They did note that the shower water appeared to be hard and slightly stained, although deemed safe. This is something to be aware of, and personal preferences for water quality might vary. The reviewer also mentioned favorable weather conditions during their stay, with cooler temperatures and comfortable nights, which undoubtedly enhanced their experience.

Jan 29, 2024 · Wyatt W. PenkeWe camped here for 3 nights in one of the electric site in mid July. We prescouted which site we wanted before reserving it online. At this time of the year, mosquitoes and horse flies are in full bloom. We brought plenty of spray repellent. Unless you were sprayed head to toe, they will find a spot to draculate your blood. The wooded trails would've been very nice to walk or hike through but we would've came out like we just lost a fighting match so we passed on the opportunity. Next time we will bring mosquitoe head nets. The area is very wooded and natural, very beautiful place. Lots of wildlife, we saw a few types of butterflies, many kinds of songs birds, chipmunks, red squirrels, loons, owls, hawks, a very large female garter snake, toads and lots of leopard and pickerel frogs at the swimming pond. Surprisingly I didn't see any salamanders, though I wasn't intentionally looking for them but was hoping to see one or two wandering around in the early mornings or late evenings of the moist forest floor. Very nice to see milkweeds along the roads and path too. There are definitely scavengers roaming at night. Our first time camping in the north so it's our fault, we were unprepared for them the first night and left food out in the netted tent. Had racoons and bears came through and raided some of our food. After that night, all food was locked away in the truck. The racoons did come back the 2nd night but left quickly after not finding anything to eat. The bear didn't come by our site but can definitely hear it trying to go through the dumpster because we were close and can see the dumpsters. The shower building was very well kepted up. I think they cleaned it 2-3x a day. Shower water were nice a warm but the water however seems to be very hard just by tasting it and is slightly stained. Visually it is undesirable but safe of course. We were lucky the week we stayed was cooler, temps never really made it past 79 degrees and nights were cool in the upper 50's and low 60's. Made for a very comfortable night.
Mar 08, 2023 · Bee KhangThe campsites are great lots of room. Not tightly packed in. The restrooms are decent. We loved our site and want to come back. It seems like such a large area to camp at!
Aug 14, 2023 · Lindsay SIt was our last time out for the season! The park is beautiful! So much to see and hike. We will return! The staff at the office were extremely helpful and nice!
Nov 18, 2021 · Robin MickleyLoved site 70! A bit close to the cabin spots and sound travels when the leaves are off the trees the fall, so nothing too bothersome. Hunting noises were a bit of a neusance, but we were still able to enjoy every moment! Bathrooms and garbage nearby with some nice easy hiking along the river! Great spot to bring our puppy on his first camping trip!
