Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site Introduce
Welcome, local outdoor enthusiasts! Are you searching for the perfect "camping near me" experience? Look no further than the Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site, nestled within the beautiful Kathio State Park in Onamia, Minnesota. This destination offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, just a short distance from civilization.
Located at Kathio, State Park Road, Onamia, MN 56359, USA, the Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site provides a serene escape with stunning natural beauty. Based on feedback from fellow campers, you can expect a picturesque setting centered around the gorgeous Black Bass Lake. The autumn season is particularly breathtaking, with vibrant fall colors painting the landscape.
However, it's important to be aware that accessing this campsite involves a hike that some visitors have described as difficult, featuring both "soaking wet areas" and "high dry areas." Proper footwear and preparation for varying trail conditions are highly recommended. Parking for the site is conveniently located at the sanitation station, situated just past the park office.
Once you arrive at the campsite, you'll find several useful amenities to enhance your experience. These include a picnic table for enjoying meals amidst nature, a large bear box to securely store your food and scented items (a crucial consideration, as fresh bear paw prints have been observed in the area), and a designated sand tent site for comfortable pitching. While the park's website mentions a vault toilet, recent visitors have noted difficulty locating one, with an open pit toilet being the available option, albeit somewhat hidden. A fire pit is also provided, perfect for evening campfires and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
One of the standout features of the Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site is its proximity to the lake itself. For those looking to explore the water, there are two canoes available for rent further down the trail. It's essential to note that these canoes are rented separately, so be sure to make a reservation if you plan to use them. Additionally, past visitors have reported that both paddles were broken, so bringing your own is highly advisable if you intend to paddle. Interestingly, it's also possible to rent a boat on the lake without needing to reserve this specific campsite, offering another avenue for water-based activities.
Privacy is another appealing aspect of this location, as it's situated approximately two miles away from civilization, allowing for a more secluded camping experience. However, some road noise can be expected, so it's something to keep in mind if you are particularly sensitive to such sounds.
Given the presence of wildlife, particularly bears, it is strongly recommended that visitors take necessary precautions. This includes being meticulous about food storage in the provided bear box and considering bringing bear spray for added safety. The overall consensus from those who have visited is that the Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site offers a very enjoyable experience, with many expressing their intention to return.
For local users searching for "camping near me," the Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site in Kathio State Park presents a wonderful opportunity to connect with nature. While it requires a bit of a trek to reach and has some rustic amenities, the reward is a beautiful and relatively private lakeside setting. Remember to prepare for the hike, potential wildlife encounters, and the available toilet facilities. Consider reserving a canoe and bringing your own paddles if you wish to explore the lake. Keep in mind the possibility of road noise while you enjoy the stunning natural environment, especially the picturesque autumn colors.
To make the most of your "camping near me" adventure at Black Bass Lake, we recommend checking the Kathio State Park's official website for the most up-to-date information on trail conditions, canoe rentals, and any park advisories. Come prepared to embrace the natural beauty and enjoy a memorable backpacking experience in Minnesota!

Black Bass Lake Backpacking Site Reviews
Beautiful campsite. You must note that there is a difficult hike with soaking wet areas, and high dry areas. The parking is located at the sanitation station, Just past the park office. The park site claims to have a vault toilet in the area but we couldn’t find one. There is a picnic table, large bear box, and small tent pad.
Apr 06, 2025 · Ev MillGorgeous lake and fairly private! About 2 mi from civilization. You do get some road noise, so keep that in mind. I went here in autumn and the colors were stunning!Comes with a fire pit, bear locker near site entrance, sand tent site, table, and open pit toilet which is a little hidden. There are 2 canoes further down the trail that are rented separately, so be sure to reserve one if you want to go out on the lake. Both paddles are currently broken, so bring your own. You can also rent a boat without reserving this campsite.I saw fresh bear paw prints around the site when i arrived, so be careful with food/scented items and bring bear spray!Overall very enjoyable and i will come back someday!
