Ogechie Campground Introduce
For local users in Minnesota seeking a "camping near me" experience that offers a tranquil escape, Ogechie Campground, situated near Onamia within Kathio State Park, presents a noteworthy option. Located at an address identified as Onamia, MN 56359, USA, and reachable by phone at (320) 532-3523 or +1 320-532-3523, Ogechie Campground appears to provide a more secluded and potentially less crowded camping environment, as indicated by a recent review mentioning having the "whole campground to ourselves on a Thursday." This could be particularly appealing to those seeking peace and quiet in nature.
Ogechie Campground is part of Kathio State Park, a significant natural and historical area in central Minnesota. This location suggests an environment rich in natural beauty, likely encompassing forests, wetlands, and proximity to Mille Lacs Lake. While one review notes that "Can’t see lake ogechie from the trail. It’s more of a swamp/marsh," it still implies the presence of a water body nearby, potentially offering opportunities for wildlife viewing and a unique natural landscape. The broader Kathio State Park is known for its diverse ecosystems, including hardwood forests, oak savanna, and wetlands, suggesting that Ogechie Campground is likely nestled within a similar environment, offering a variety of flora and fauna to observe.
Based on the provided customer reviews, we can glean insights into the services and features available at Ogechie Campground:
- Campsites: The campground offers multiple campsites, with at least 34 individual sites, as one reviewer mentions "#34 is my favorite so far." The specific number of total campsites isn't stated, but it's clearly more than just a few.
- Outhouse Facilities: The presence of outhouses is explicitly mentioned, and a reviewer advises against booking sites 23 or 7 due to their proximity to these facilities and the associated smell. This indicates that the campground provides basic non-flush toilet facilities.
- No Showers: One reviewer explicitly states, "No showers but we were aware." This is an important piece of information for local users planning their camping trip, suggesting that personal hygiene will need to be managed without on-site shower facilities.
- Potable Water (Implied): While not directly mentioned, the fact that it's a functioning campground implies the availability of a source for potable water. Campers should confirm the location and accessibility of water spigots upon arrival.
- Friendly and Helpful Staff: A reviewer noted that the "Lady at the check in station was very helpful and friendly," suggesting positive interactions with campground staff.
- Buggy Conditions: Another significant point from a review is, "Bring bug spray. Very buggy." This indicates that insect repellent is highly recommended, especially during warmer months in Minnesota, particularly near water bodies and wetlands.
- Quiet Atmosphere (Potentially): The experience of having the "whole campground to ourselves on a Thursday" suggests that at certain times, the campground can be very quiet and offer a sense of seclusion.
- Trail Access: Trails are mentioned in the context of not providing a view of Lake Ogechie, indicating the presence of trails within or near the campground, likely for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural area.
The features of Ogechie Campground seem to lean towards a more rustic and nature-focused camping experience. The absence of showers and the use of outhouses point to a less developed campground compared to those with full amenities. The potential for a quiet and secluded atmosphere, however, could be a major draw for those seeking a peaceful retreat. The proximity to Lake Ogechie (even if the views are limited and it has a marshy character) still suggests a connection to a water-based environment, which can be appealing for wildlife observation and the overall ambiance. Being located within Kathio State Park also provides access to the broader park's natural and historical resources, including potential hiking trails, historical sites, and access to Mille Lacs Lake itself, although this review focuses specifically on the Ogechie Campground area.
Based on the reviews, key considerations for local users thinking about Ogechie Campground include:
- Site Selection: Avoiding campsites 23 and 7 due to their proximity to the outhouses and potential odor issues. Reviewer #34 is mentioned as a favorite, suggesting it might be a more desirable location within the campground.
- Self-Sufficiency: Bringing personal toilet paper as a precaution, in case the outhouses are not adequately stocked.
- Insect Protection: Packing and using insect repellent due to potentially buggy conditions, especially during warmer seasons.
- Awareness of Limited Amenities: Understanding that showers are not available on-site.
Promotional information for Ogechie Campground is not included in the provided text. However, typical promotional aspects for campgrounds within state parks might include:

The DNR website is often the primary source for booking campsites and finding detailed information about state park campgrounds. It would also be prudent to inquire about the current conditions regarding insects and the nature of the lake/marsh area to be fully prepared for the camping experience.
In conclusion, Ogechie Campground within Kathio State Park near Onamia, MN, offers a potentially quiet and nature-oriented "camping near me" option for local users. While it provides basic amenities like outhouses and campsites, it lacks showers, and campers should be prepared for potentially buggy conditions. The proximity to Lake Ogechie, described as more of a swamp or marsh, still suggests a unique natural environment with trail access. Careful campsite selection, preparedness for insects, and awareness of the limited amenities are key considerations based on recent camper reviews. For comprehensive details and any available promotions, contacting Kathio State Park or the Minnesota DNR is highly recommended.

Ogechie Campground Reviews
I agree with the person who said don't book 23 or 7... they are right next to the outhouses.. I was in 23 and all I could smell this morning was the outhouses. I also recommend bringing TP with you in case the out houses don't have any. All other campsites I have stayed in at Kathio have been just fine. #34 is my favorite so far.
Sep 24, 2023 · Joslyn HoiumHad the whole campground to ourselves on a Thursday! Very quiet and clean for us. Bring bug spray. Very buggy. Can’t see lake ogechie from the trail. It’s more of a swamp/marsh. Lady at the check in station was very helpful and friendly. Great stay. No showers but we were aware.
Sep 02, 2022 · Paige LuebbertNot bad but next time would get a site away from the road - lots of cars going by at night that weren't just going into the campground. Preferred the other campground at Kathio, much quieter and more access to trails. Ogechie is next to one short trail, and from there a long hike to the rest of the park.
Sep 12, 2021 · Shannon CrisseyDecent camping. The bathrooms are less-than-ideal and some of the campsites are a little closer together than I would have liked. Overall we had a good experience, lots of hiking trails and places to explore in the park. Good for someone new to the camping idea. I wouldn't recommend staying here for more than a few nights.
Sep 25, 2020 · Cole CarterWhatever you do, don’t stay at site #23 or site #7. These sites are essentially on top of each other - no barrier between them whatsoever. It really should be one campsite. Also, the toilet feels like it is in your site as there is also no barrier (not even a couple of bushes) between it and the site. You will feel like people are walking right into your campsite to use it.On top of that, site #23 doesn’t have a tent pad... hands down the worst campsite I’ve ever personally seen.
