Matson's Big Manistee River Introduce
For local users in search of a "camping near me" experience with a focus on river access and a rustic atmosphere, Matson's Big Manistee River Campground, located at 2680 Bialik Rd, Manistee, MI 49660, USA, presents a noteworthy option. Situated right across the drive from the renowned Big Manistee River, this campground caters particularly to those interested in fishing and enjoying the natural beauty of the river environment. Reviews from campers provide insights into the campground's strengths and weaknesses, offering a balanced perspective for potential visitors.
One reviewer described Matson's Big Manistee River Campground as a "great rustic campsite," immediately setting the expectation for a more natural and less developed camping experience. This rustic charm can be appealing to those who prefer a closer connection with nature and a less structured campground setting. The prime location "right across the drive from the river" is a significant advantage for anglers and anyone wishing to easily access the Big Manistee River for various activities.
The staff at Matson's Big Manistee River Campground are consistently praised for their friendliness. The reviewer specifically mentioned that the "staff was incredibly friendly" and even went above and beyond by offering a "suggested charter for my buddy to harvest some salmon." This proactive and helpful attitude from the staff can greatly enhance a camper's experience, providing valuable local knowledge and assistance in making the most of their visit, particularly for those interested in fishing.
Another reviewer offered a more detailed breakdown of the campground based on their personal criteria for a good campsite. They listed "Good size lots" as their top priority, followed by "Clean restrooms," "Friendly hosts/campers," "Amenities," and "Something special." Applying these criteria to Matson's, the reviewer noted that the campground has "very small lots." This could be a significant consideration for campers with larger tents or RVs, or those who value having ample space around their campsite for privacy and activities.
In contrast to the small lot sizes, the reviewer acknowledged that Matson's has "clean restrooms," which is a crucial aspect of any campground and contributes significantly to the overall comfort and hygiene of the camping experience. Clean and well-maintained restroom facilities are often a key factor in campers' satisfaction.
Regarding the social atmosphere, the reviewer found the hosts to be "Friendly" but the other "campers" to be "unfriendly." This highlights a potential inconsistency in the social dynamics of the campground, which might be a consideration for those who highly value a welcoming and interactive community among fellow campers. However, individual experiences can vary, and this observation is subjective.
In terms of "Amenities," the reviewer stated that Matson's has "no amenities." This suggests a more basic campground setup, potentially lacking features such as a playground, laundry facilities, a camp store, or organized activities. Campers looking for a wide range of amenities might find Matson's to be less equipped compared to more developed campgrounds.
The "Something special" at Matson's, according to the reviewer, is "an amazing river" – the Big Manistee River itself. This underscores the primary draw of the campground: its direct access to a renowned river known for its natural beauty and, as suggested by the staff's charter recommendation, its salmon fishing opportunities. The reviewer concluded that Matson's is "Good for boat based fisherman but not families," likely due to the small lot sizes and lack of family-oriented amenities. They advised the owners to "drop a few lots and develop into more amenities," suggesting a potential trade-off between the number of campsites and the overall camper experience.
Based on these reviews, the environment of Matson's Big Manistee River Campground is characterized by its close proximity to the river, offering a natural and potentially scenic setting. The focus seems to be on providing a basecamp for river-related activities, particularly fishing. The campground appears to be more rustic in nature, with clean but perhaps basic facilities and smaller campsites.
The services offered include friendly staff who are knowledgeable about the local area and fishing opportunities. Essential hookups for RVs (electricity, water, sewer) are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, so potential RV campers should inquire about these directly. The availability of a charter suggestion for salmon fishing indicates a connection to local fishing resources.
Key features of Matson's seem to be its direct river access, its appeal to boat-based fishermen, and the friendliness of the staff. The small lot sizes and the reported lack of amenities are important factors to consider, especially for families or those seeking a more amenity-rich camping experience.
Promotional information is not provided in the reviews. Local users interested in staying at Matson's Big Manistee River Campground should contact them directly at (231) 723-5705 or +1 231-723-5705 to inquire about campsite availability, rates, specific amenities offered (such as hookups, fire pits, picnic tables), and any seasonal specials or discounts. It would be particularly important to ask about the size of the campsites to ensure they can accommodate your equipment comfortably.
For local users specifically interested in "camping near me" for fishing on the Big Manistee River, Matson's appears to be a conveniently located option with helpful staff who can provide fishing-related advice. However, those traveling with families or seeking a campground with more extensive amenities and larger campsites might need to consider other options in the area.
In conclusion, Matson's Big Manistee River Campground offers a rustic, river-focused camping experience in Manistee, Michigan. Its key strengths include direct access to the Big Manistee River and a friendly staff. Potential drawbacks include small campsite sizes and a reported lack of amenities. It seems particularly well-suited for boat-based fishermen who prioritize river access over spacious sites and extensive facilities. Local users should contact the campground directly to obtain detailed information about site availability, amenities, and pricing to determine if it meets their specific needs for a "camping near me" getaway.

Matson's Big Manistee River Reviews
Great rustic campsite, my buddy had reserved for the weekend. Right across the drive from the river. Staff was incredibly friendly. And even made a suggested charter for my buddy to harvest some salmon.
Oct 20, 2024 · Samuel LemanskiComponents of a good campsite in descending order or importance: 1. Good size lots; 2. Clean restrooms; 3. Friendly hosts/campers; 4. Amenities; 5. Something special. Matsons has very small lots, clean restrooms; Friendly hosts but unfriendly campers; no amenities and an amazing river. Hence the rating. Good for boat based fisherman but not families. I'd advise the owners to drop a few lots and develop into more amenities.
May 27, 2024 · GrahamGreat campground on the Big Manistee River. We rented the lodge for a multi-family trip and it was perfect for our needs. Clean, comfortable, and a great location on the river. Owners are friendly, helpful, and were quick to respond both before we arrived and while we were onsite.
Jun 17, 2024 · Tim BrushLoved our experience! Great location for kayaking on the Big Manistee River. Cheryl and her staff were super to work with setting everything up for our event with 8 people. We had 2 RVs and a cabin for our group, 1 person had their own kayak, and they accommodated our group without a hitch and always a smile! We had a great time! Thank you!
Aug 13, 2023 · Kristen KnotekGreat place to get away and do some fishing. It sits right on the Manistee River. Great fall salmon fishing and steelhead throughout the fall and winter. The cabins are a little outdated but acceptable. It's a one of a kind experience. One of the only places that you can camp along the river. They offer tent camping, rv camping and cabins. The town of Manistee has a nice beach and lighthouse pier right on Lake Michigan. Lots of interesting places in the area and some pretty decent food in town.
