Beautiful property on Lake Martin. Called to make reservations and they called back in within an hour to complete. Travelled there in a small camper/van. The lake had nice sandy bottom so I swam from my campsite. Many docks around the campground for people with boats which seemed to be assigned to certain campsites. Also had a marina. We didn't have a boat so I don't know how that worked. Bathrooms were old but clean and well provisioned. Had a great hot shower with excellent water pressure. Lots of dock work being done in preparation for summer. Property hilly, many sites not flat. Might be difficult for large RV's. Peeked into cabins which looked old but clean and neat. Porches around cabins getting a little rickety. Nice sandy beach with volleyball net. Playground for kids. Almost no one there on Easter weekend. Need to support this Rec center so it can continue!!!! Hidden gem. - Bonnie Harris

Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area Introduce

For local users in Alabama searching for "camping near me" with a picturesque lakeside setting, the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area, located at 350 Air Force Rd, Dadeville, AL 36853, USA, offers a unique retreat on the shores of beautiful Lake Martin. This recreation area, while associated with Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, appears to be accessible to a wider audience and provides a range of camping and recreational opportunities. Based on customer reviews, it offers a blend of natural beauty and basic amenities, making it a potentially attractive option for families and individuals seeking a lakeside getaway.

The environment of the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area is consistently described as beautiful, with its prime location directly on Lake Martin being a major highlight. The lake features a nice sandy bottom in swimming areas, allowing for enjoyable swimming directly from campsites. The property is noted to be hilly, which can affect the levelness of some campsites, potentially posing a challenge for larger RVs. However, this terrain likely contributes to scenic lake views from various points within the recreation area. The presence of many docks around the campground suggests ample access to the water for boating enthusiasts, with some docks seemingly assigned to specific campsites. A marina is also located on the property, further supporting boating activities. The presence of a sandy beach with a volleyball net indicates a dedicated area for recreational beach activities. While the property is undergoing some dock work in preparation for the summer season, the overall environment offers a blend of natural lakefront beauty and facilities for water-based recreation.

The services at the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area include the provision of campsites suitable for small campers/vans, and potentially larger RVs, although the hilly terrain might make some sites less suitable for very large vehicles. Reservations can be made by phone, with a reported efficient call-back system for completing the booking. The campground offers basic but functional amenities, including bathrooms that are described as old but clean and well-provisioned, with great hot showers and excellent water pressure. For boating needs, a marina is available, although details on its services are not fully elaborated. The presence of assigned docks suggests a system for boat owners to have convenient access to the lake. Recreational facilities include a sandy beach with a volleyball net and a playground for children. While boat rentals (pontoon boats, jet skis) were advertised, recent feedback indicates that many of these were not in working condition, and jet skis are no longer available. Only limited options like a water tricycle and a paddle boat were reported to be functional. Despite these limitations, the staff is consistently described as friendly and helpful.

Key features of the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area include its direct access to Lake Martin with a sandy bottom for swimming, numerous docks for boat access, and a marina. The availability of campsites caters to different types of campers, although the hilly terrain is a point to note for those with larger RVs. The presence of clean and well-maintained (though older) bathrooms with good showers is a significant plus. Recreational amenities such as a sandy beach, volleyball net, and playground enhance the family-friendly appeal of the area. While the advertised boat rentals were largely unavailable at the time of the review, the potential for bringing your own boat and utilizing the docks and marina remains a key feature for boating enthusiasts. The availability of cabins, described as old but clean and neat, offers an alternative to traditional camping, although the porches were noted to be somewhat rickety. The fact that the recreation area was reportedly almost empty during Easter weekend suggests that it might offer a less crowded camping experience, especially during certain times of the year. The reviewer's call to support the rec center highlights its value as a "hidden gem."

Customer reviews provide a mixed but generally positive view of the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area. One reviewer praised the beautiful property, the ease of making reservations, the enjoyable swimming experience, and the clean and well-provisioned bathrooms with excellent showers. They also noted the ongoing dock work and the hilly terrain. The second review highlighted the friendly staff and enjoyable stay but pointed out the significant issue with the unavailable boat rentals, despite being advertised. This indicates a potential discrepancy between advertised and currently available amenities. However, the reviewer still expressed their intention to return, suggesting that the overall experience, likely driven by the location and staff, was positive. Both reviews collectively paint a picture of a scenic lakeside recreation area with friendly service and basic but functional amenities, though potential visitors should be aware of the current limitations regarding boat rentals and the hilly terrain.

For local users searching for "camping near me" on Lake Martin, the Maxwell-Gunter AFB Lake Martin Recreation Area offers a potentially appealing option, especially for those who value direct lake access for swimming and boating, and appreciate a less crowded environment. The availability of cabins offers an alternative for those who prefer not to tent camp or bring an RV, although their condition should be considered based on the review. The friendly staff seems to be a consistent positive aspect of the visitor experience.
