For local residents in and around Gatesville, North Carolina, seeking a serene and well-maintained "camping near me" destination, the Merchants Millpond Family Campground, located at 47 US Hwy 158 Business E, Gatesville, NC 27938, presents an attractive option. Based on the available customer reviews, this campground offers a peaceful atmosphere, particularly during the winter, coupled with clean facilities and spacious, secluded campsites, albeit with a focus on primitive camping.
The environment surrounding Merchants Millpond Family Campground appears to be a significant draw for visitors seeking a tranquil escape. The first review specifically mentions it being a "very nice and quiet campground in the winter months," suggesting a peaceful ambiance that allows for relaxation and a connection with nature without the potential crowds of peak season. While the reviews don't provide extensive details about the natural landscape, the name "Merchants Millpond" strongly implies the presence of a millpond, which could offer scenic views, opportunities for wildlife observation (aquatic and terrestrial), and a generally natural and potentially diverse ecosystem. The surrounding area of Gatesville, NC, is part of the Inner Banks region of North Carolina, known for its coastal plains, waterways, and natural beauty. Campers might expect a landscape characterized by forests, wetlands, and the tranquil waters of the millpond.
The services and features of Merchants Millpond Family Campground, as gleaned from the customer reviews, highlight a focus on providing a clean, comfortable, and private camping experience, primarily catering to those who prefer a more rustic approach:
- Clean and well-kept facilities: A recurring positive point in the first review is the cleanliness of the "grounds, sites, and restrooms/showers." This indicates a commitment to maintaining a pleasant and hygienic environment for campers, which is a significant factor in overall satisfaction.
- Spacious campsites: The second review explicitly mentions "Great camping sites. Spacious," suggesting that campers can expect ample room at their chosen site, allowing for comfortable setup and a feeling of not being too close to neighboring campers.
- Secluded campsites: In addition to being spacious, the campsites are also described as "secluded." This implies a degree of privacy and immersion in nature, where campers can enjoy a sense of solitude and escape from the more communal feel of some campgrounds.
- Easy access: The campground offers an "Easy to locate entrance off the main highway," making it convenient for local users and those traveling from nearby areas to find and access the location.
- Primitive campsites: A crucial piece of information from the second review is that the "Sites are primitive, with no electric hookup or water at the individual sites." This clearly indicates that this campground caters to those who are comfortable with a more traditional camping style, relying on their own power sources (e.g., generators, solar) and bringing their own water.
- Restrooms and showers: Despite the primitive nature of the individual campsites, the first review mentions "restrooms/showers," indicating that communal facilities are available for campers' use. The fact that these are reported as "very clean and well kept" adds significant value to the overall experience.
The customer reviews offer valuable perspectives for local users considering Merchants Millpond Family Campground for their "camping near me" needs. The first reviewer's intention to make it a "goto" destination after two recent visits speaks volumes about the positive impression the campground has made, particularly highlighting the cleanliness and quiet atmosphere during the winter months. This suggests that those seeking a peaceful retreat, especially outside of peak season, might find this campground particularly appealing.
The second review reinforces the appeal of the campsites themselves, emphasizing their spaciousness and seclusion. This is a significant advantage for campers who value privacy and a more immersive natural experience. However, the explicit mention of "no electric hookup or water at the individual sites" is a critical piece of information for potential visitors to be aware of, ensuring they come prepared for primitive camping.
Given the information available, local users considering Merchants Millpond Family Campground can anticipate:

Merchants Millpond Family Campground Reviews
A very nice and quiet campground in the winter months. The grounds, sites, and restrooms/showers are very clean and well kept. I've been here twice the past month, and it's probably going to become one of my goto's.
Feb 19, 2025 · Michael FirthGreat camping sites. Spacious, secluded and quiet. Easy to locate entrance off the main highway. Sites are primitive, with no electric hookup or water at the individual sites.
Nov 04, 2024 · Xplore Kayak ToursThis is one of the best state parks we’ve stayed at in North Carolina. Very private with large sites and nice, clean bathrooms with hot showers. The family campground is not at the visitor center. We checked in at visitor center and they gave us directions to campground. They also have firewood for sale at the visitor center so if you want wood buy it while you’re there. We will be back to this campground.
Dec 06, 2022 · Robin BA perfect small campground except that the dumpster emptying service came at 3 am and was very loud.Very wooded sites offer lots of shade. Kayaking in Bennets Creek (swamp) at the nearby state park is gorgeous.Very easy hiking trails are lovely tooNo playground.Very clean restroom and hot showers.Dog friendly.Picnic area available a couple of miles away near the state park visitor center.
May 21, 2024 · Hillary ColvinWonderful spot.Very quiet and very wooded. No light pollution if you're into star or moon gazing, but you'll have to go to a small (50 yards) circle of clearing near the showers/toilets to see the sky. Which, there are some strong lamps illuminating that. If you're a serious night sky gazer, you could set up a t-scope somewhere nearby but might have to drive a mile or so.No electric for the sites (coming next year, we were told), and one water outlet for the circle of 12-15 sites. Plenty of water available, at considerable pressure. Hold onto your water jug/carriers!GREAT area for tent campers, and for "boondocking" RVs and trailers. The shower/toilet facilities are great, with good hot water and lighting, and I saw large heater units so probably comfy in the winter. We were also told that there will be a whole new shower/toilet thing next year.Easy access to things up and down the road (gas station, roads to somewhere, the boat launch, etc.). There are a couple of trails leading straight out of the campground, and several trails in the Park that those trails tie into. We've found that NC is seriously upgrading a lot of their state park's trailer camping spots (hence "next year" for the campsites and the "necessary"). Other NC state parks that we've visited have been very well done. This campground was very well set up originally, but getting dated for modern tastes. It's still a great place. If you're a tent camper but would like a nearby shower and "necessary", this place is perfect. Spacious sites, so privacy. Seems to be a solid tradition of quiet among the campers whether tent or RV.
