Midway Campground Introduce
For local residents in Washington State seeking a unique and picturesque camping experience within the 'camping near me' category, Midway Campground on Orcas Island offers a well-maintained retreat with access to beautiful lakes and a variety of outdoor activities. Located in Olga, WA 98279, USA, this campground provides a stunningly gorgeous setting for a memorable getaway. It's important to note that reaching Orcas Island requires a ferry ride, and reservations for both the campground and the ferry are highly suggested due to their popularity, especially during the camping season.
The environment surrounding Midway Campground is characterized by the scenic beauty of Orcas Island, the largest of the San Juan Islands. Campers can choose campsites located either directly by the lake or overlooking it, providing fantastic views, particularly during sunrise and sunset. The presence of lakes is a central feature, offering opportunities for various water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. The calm waters are ideal for leisurely exploration and enjoying the serene island scenery from a different perspective. For those who enjoy fishing, the lakes are also home to a variety of fish, promising a chance for a relaxing angling experience.
Beyond the lakes, the environment around Midway Campground boasts numerous hiking and biking trails, catering to different skill levels and interests. Exploring these trails allows visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Orcas Island, discover hidden coves, ascend to viewpoints with panoramic vistas, and encounter the island's diverse flora and fauna. The combination of lakeside and woodland environments ensures a rich and varied outdoor experience for campers.
In terms of services and amenities, Midway Campground is reported to be well maintained. A significant convenience is the availability of clean bathrooms. For those looking to freshen up, a shower is also accessible, although it operates via a coin slot. This is a valuable amenity, especially for longer stays. For campers who may have forgotten firewood, a firewood dispenser is conveniently located before the campground entrance, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a campfire, a quintessential part of the camping experience.
A crucial piece of information for those planning a trip to Midway Campground is the strong recommendation for campsite reservations. Due to its popularity, especially during peak season, walk-up availability is described as very slim. To secure a spot, it is essential to book in advance. Furthermore, since Orcas Island is accessible by ferry, it is equally important to reserve your ferry ride to the island at the same time as you book your campsite. Both campground and ferry reservations tend to fill up quickly, so early planning is key to a successful trip.
One aspect to consider regarding the camping experience at Midway Campground is the potential for a "community camping" atmosphere. While the location is stunningly gorgeous, one reviewer noted that this can sometimes mean encountering noisy neighbors and occasional road noise. Therefore, while the natural beauty is undeniable, those seeking complete solitude might find it somewhat elusive here. However, the overall positive sentiment in the reviews suggests that the beauty and amenities of the campground more than compensate for these occasional disturbances.
For pet owners, Midway Campground is dog-friendly, allowing you to bring your furry companions along on your camping adventure. This is a significant plus for many local users who enjoy outdoor activities with their dogs. The presence of lakes also provides opportunities for dogs to cool off and enjoy the water, under appropriate supervision and adhering to any campground rules regarding pets.
Promotional aspects of Midway Campground are evident in the glowing reviews that highlight its well-maintained facilities, clean bathrooms, convenient firewood access, and the stunning views of the lake, especially during sunrise and sunset. The abundance of water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding, along with the excellent fishing opportunities and the extensive network of hiking and biking trails, serve as strong selling points for outdoor enthusiasts. The fact that visitors express a desire to return ("we will definitely be back!") speaks volumes about the positive experiences at Midway Campground.
The combination of lakeside camping with mountain views (implied by the island's topography), the availability of essential amenities, and the plethora of recreational activities make Midway Campground a highly attractive destination for local users searching for 'camping near me' that offers more than just a place to sleep. The need for advance reservations underscores its popularity and the desirability of its location and offerings.
In conclusion, Midway Campground on Orcas Island provides a fantastic camping experience for local residents in Washington State. Its well-maintained facilities, access to beautiful lakes for water activities and fishing, extensive hiking and biking trails, and stunning scenic views make it a worthwhile destination. While it may not offer complete solitude, the overall beauty and range of amenities ensure a great outdoor time. Remember to plan ahead and make reservations for both the campground and the ferry to secure your spot at this popular and picturesque island camping retreat.

Midway Campground Reviews
This campground is well maintained. Clean bathrooms and shower is available by coin slot. Forgot your firewood? A firewood dispenser is also available before the campground entrance. Campsites are either by the lake or overlooking the lake. It's a great view during sunrise and sunset. Campsite reservation is highly suggested and at the same time reserve your ferry ride to Orcas Island to get there. Both reservations fill up fast during the camping season. There are first come first serve campsites but chances are very slim. If you're into water activities, the lakes are great for kayaking, canoeing, and for standup paddle boards. And don't forget your fishing poles. The lakes has varieties of fish to play with. Hiking trails are everywhere as well as bike trails. Take advantage of these amenities and you'll have a great outdoor time.
Oct 14, 2021 · HiwakaiDogs allowed? Yes. Wood vending machine? Yes. Lakes? Yes. Mountains? Yes. Solitude? Sort of...Community camping means noisy neighbors and occasional road noise, but it's still well worth it. A stunningly gorgeous place to camp, we will definitely be back!
May 29, 2021 · Emily MichaelA great camp site with tables and fire pits. Water stations are nearby for dishwashing as well as a firewood vending machine. Hot showers available nearby, but bring quarters!
May 22, 2023 · James HwangI go to this campground every year in late March. Just me & my dog.If you want to spend your nights in the most beautiful and serene place on earth, then you won't wanna miss staying here.Every year up til this year the showers were coin operated. Now they are FREE!! There's nothing better than a hot shower after walking in the woods all day. Well one thing is better, that they are free! The park rangers come by almost hourly to check/clean the bathrooms & campsites. And after my dog & I got a little too far from the truck & wasn't back til way after dusk the park ranger waited at our truck to let us out the gate so we weren't locked in all night! She wasn't upset at all, just wanted to make sure we were OK and got out the gate before locking up.When we hike we don't use trails so sometimes making it back before dark is a challenge. I appreciated her waiting on us. As that walk back down the mountain in the pitch dark wouldn't have been my cup of tea!You won't be let down staying here. It's my home away from home!!
Mar 28, 2024 · Tomi Tobin FernandezWe visited mid week in late July and the campground was fully booked. Not a ton of privacy between sites but well located to explore the island. Restrooms were pretty decent.... I would stay again but would look elsewhere beforehand
