Miwok campground Introduce
Welcome to Miwok Campground, a hidden gem for outdoor enthusiasts seeking an immersive coastal camping experience in Bodega Bay, California. Located at 201 Doran Beach Rd, Bodega Bay, CA 94923, USA, Miwok Campground is a designated tent-only area within the expansive Doran Regional Park. Easily reachable by phone at (707) 875-3540 or mobile phone at +1 707-875-3540, this campground offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature right on the Pacific coastline. As a featured destination on "Camping Near Me" platforms, Miwok Campground provides an array of services and a captivating environment perfect for local users and travelers alike.
The most striking feature of Miwok Campground is its unparalleled proximity to the ocean. Situated directly on the dunes of the two-mile sandy beach at Bodega Bay, campers can literally feel the ground rumble with the rhythm of the waves hitting the shore. The constant sound of the Pacific, coupled with the distant "singing" of sea lions resting on a nearby island, creates an unforgettable auditory backdrop for your stay. This intimate connection to the marine environment is frequently highlighted by past visitors as a truly magical aspect of the campground.
The surrounding area is part of the breathtaking Sonoma Coast State Park, characterized by its craggy coastline, fertile tide pools, and offshore reefs. The environment boasts a diverse ecosystem with native shrubs, grasses, and wildflowers that burst into color during spring and summer, including yellow and blue lupine, sea pink, and Indian paintbrush. While the weather can be a chilly combination of wind and fog, especially in the mornings, it often burns off to reveal pleasant, sunny afternoons. Visitors are always advised to dress in layers for the varying coastal conditions.
Wildlife abounds in and around Doran Regional Park. Beyond the sea lions, lucky visitors might spot raccoons, rabbits, black-tailed deer, skunks, and squirrels. The Sonoma Coast is a haven for birdwatchers, with approximately 300 identified species, including shorebirds like sandpipers, gulls, cormorants, and pelicans, as well as migratory birds like terns, egrets, and loons along the Pacific Flyway. From December to April, the migrating gray whales can often be spotted from Bodega Head, offering a truly spectacular natural display. The park also features important habitats like sand dunes and pickleweed marsh.
Miwok Campground offers a blend of rustic charm and essential amenities to ensure a comfortable camping experience. While it is a tent-only campground and does not provide electrical hook-ups for RVs, potable water spigots are readily available throughout the park. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for evening gatherings and enjoying a campfire under the stars (ground fires are permitted only in department-maintained fire rings).
One of the most appreciated services, as noted by numerous campers, are the excellent restroom facilities. These include flush toilets and coin-operated hot showers, a welcome luxury after a day of beach activities or hiking. Electrical outlets are also available in the restrooms. While Miwok Campground itself doesn't have showers, campers are able to use the hot showers at the nearby Bodega Dunes Campground. A dump station is also available within Doran Regional Park for a fee, making it convenient for those with self-contained units.
The campground and surrounding Doran Regional Park are known for being well-maintained and regularly patrolled by park staff, contributing to a clean and safe environment for all visitors. While there is no Wi-Fi at the campground, cell service (Verizon and T-Mobile) is generally good, allowing for some connectivity if needed.
Dogs are welcome at Miwok Campground and within Doran Regional Park, provided they are kept on a leash. There is a fee for bringing dogs. It's important to note that while dogs are allowed in the campground and on a specific dog-friendly beach within the park (which has been available on a trial basis and is hoped to become permanent), they are generally not permitted on trails or other sensitive wildlife areas to protect the local fauna.
Miwok Campground, as part of Doran Regional Park, offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. The immediate proximity to the two-mile sandy beach makes it ideal for walking, beachcombing, and playing in the sand. The south-facing beach ensures typically calmer waves compared to other parts of the Sonoma Coast, making it a favorite for families with children.
For those who enjoy more active pursuits, there are ample hiking opportunities on the peninsula and the nearby Bodega Headlands. A 1.3-mile trail passes through grassy dunes on the north edge of the beach and connects to an ADA-accessible boardwalk with benches and viewing areas. The park also boasts a boat launch, providing access to Bodega Bay and Bodega Harbor for kayaking, stand-up paddling, and kite surfing. The jetty on the park's west end is a popular spot for rock fishing and crabbing, as well as exploring sea life in the tide pools (though visitors are reminded not to disturb the creatures).
Accessibility is a key feature of Doran Regional Park. In addition to the ADA-accessible boardwalk, the park offers ADA-accessible restrooms and parking, as well as an ADA-accessible kayak launch, one of the first in Sonoma County. Beach wheelchairs are also available at no charge, further enhancing access to the beach for all visitors.
Beyond the immediate vicinity, the location of Miwok Campground provides easy access to the charming town of Bodega Bay, where you can find local markets, restaurants, and shops for any forgotten supplies or a delicious meal. The area also holds significant historical importance as the traditional home of the Coast Miwok and Pomo people, whose presence dates back thousands of years.
Given its popularity, especially during peak seasons, advance reservations for Miwok Campground are highly recommended. Starting May 1, 2025, camping reservations will be available up to six months in advance, a change designed to make it easier for more people to secure high-demand campsites. You can make reservations online through the Sonoma County Parks reservation website or by calling their reservation line at (707) 565-2267, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For same-day reservations, online booking is available until 11:59 p.m., or you can call the reservation line during operating hours.
It's important to note that a non-refundable change fee applies for any modifications to your reservation, and cancellations must be made no later than your scheduled arrival date. One household may reserve a maximum of two campsites per park per visit, and only one email address per household can be used for reservations. ADA accessible campsites are designated for use by people with disabilities, with specific guidelines for reservation.
Miwok Campground, within Doran Regional Park, is a fantastic choice for those looking for a memorable "Camping Near Me" experience on the California coast. Its stunning natural environment, convenient facilities, and wide range of activities make it a perfect destination for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike. Miwok campground Reviews
One of my favorite camping experiences ever. Right on the dunes at the 2-mile sandy beach on Bodega Bay. At night, you can feel the ground rumble as the waves hit the shore, and listen to the sea lions singing as they rest on a nearby island. Lots of hiking opportunities on the peninsula and the nearby Bodega Headlands. Excellent facilities. Campsites are adequately separated for privacy. Did I mention that it's a few feet from the ocean?
Nov 06, 2022 · David LingnerWe had site N and it was super close to the beach and near the bathrooms.
Jan 09, 2025 · Pia becerraGreat campground. Right by the beach which is very kid friendly as it's in a cove so there's not too many strong waves.
May 15, 2022 · Veena Krishnamoorthycampsites are booked and completely empty. camp host is not ranger so expect less than professional behavior. one of the camp hosts tells people to steal other people's firewood and the other goes around campground harassing the only groups that are there saying "oh I don't remember this campsite is booked". almost all of the campsites are booked. they also failed to remove someone who was illegally parking there.the other group here has about 10 people which seems like a cheap way to camp cause it's about 4 dollars a night a person. they don't seem to be interested in restaurants.also there's a shell of a small crab on the parking lot right next to the parking line. it's either a very mean bird or someone was poaching on the beach.I checked with the ranger, the coin operated shower can be used when surf's up. ☺️ If you happen to be surfing here, there's hot shower. You don't have to be a camper.it's stormy tonight, a different camp host made sure that everybody was okay and she helped me set up shelter for the cold stormy weather. she's absolutely amazing. her and her husband also brought firewood because it's freezing cold tonight. amazing couple.
