Doran Campground Introduce
Welcome to Doran Campground, a highly popular and well-regarded coastal camping destination located in the picturesque town of Bodega Bay, California. As a premier option within the "Camping Near Me" category, Doran Campground offers a unique blend of beachfront access, modern amenities, and a plethora of recreational activities, making it an ideal choice for families, individuals, and groups seeking a memorable outdoor experience on the Sonoma Coast. This detailed introduction provides an objective overview of the campground's stunning environment, its extensive services, diverse features, and important promotional considerations, all based on comprehensive public information and authentic customer reviews.
Doran Campground is situated at 201 Doran Beach Rd, Bodega Bay, CA 94923, USA. For direct inquiries, you can reach the park office at (707) 875-3540 or +1 707-875-3540. The campground's environment is truly its most defining characteristic. It is located on a narrow, crescent-shaped peninsula, offering a unique position with views of both Bodega Bay and Bodega Harbor. The park features a wide, two-mile stretch of sandy beach, providing direct access to the ocean. Reviewers consistently praise the "great" campsites and the overall natural beauty. The coastal climate in Bodega Bay can be varied; while winter months can offer "great weather," the area is also known for its cool, often foggy summers and strong winds, especially near the ocean. One review explicitly notes that "it can get quite cold when the wind blows strong," emphasizing the need for appropriate layered clothing. Despite the potential for wind, the south-facing beach typically offers calmer waves than other parts of the Sonoma Coast, making it particularly family-friendly. The environment seamlessly blends natural beauty with accessible recreational spaces, from sandy shores to areas suitable for fishing and bird-watching.
Doran Campground provides a comprehensive array of services that contribute to a comfortable camping experience. It accommodates a variety of camping styles, including tent, trailer, and RV campers, with over 120 reservable sites available year-round. These sites are distributed across five distinct areas: The Shell, Gull, and Cove campgrounds situated between Bodega Harbor and Doran Beach Road, and the Jetty and Miwok campgrounds positioned between Bodega Bay and Doran Beach Road. Miwok is specifically designated for tent camping with vehicle parking in an adjacent lot. A significant service highlight is the provision of potable water at each campsite, often directly via a "water faucet," which is a considerable convenience for campers. Each spot also comes equipped with a "fire pit" (often with a grate) and a "table," facilitating outdoor cooking and dining. The restroom facilities are consistently praised, with reviews noting that "Bathrooms/showers are great." These restrooms feature flush toilets and coin-operated showers, offering a level of comfort not always found in public campgrounds. While electrical hookups are generally not available at Doran Campground (except at Stillwater Cove Regional Park, a different location), generator hours are permitted from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. An RV dump station is also available on-site, though a fee of $10 is typically charged for its use. The park is managed by Sonoma County Regional Parks, ensuring professional oversight and maintenance.
The features of Doran Campground are numerous and cater to a wide range of outdoor activities. The "2-mile stretch of beach" is a primary feature, ideal for activities such as walking, picnicking, playing in the sand, flying kites, surfing, and bird-watching. For families, it's an "ideal spot for natural outdoor activities" where "Kids can enjoy playing on the beach while catching clams and crabs." Crabbing, in particular, is "well known" at Doran, especially during the Dungeness crab season from November to June, making the jetty a popular spot for both crabbing and rock fishing. The park also boasts a boat launch, providing direct access to Bodega Bay and Bodega Harbor, suitable for boats up to 20 feet in length, and an ADA-accessible kayak launch. This feature makes it excellent for kayaking, paddleboarding, and general boating. Beyond water activities, Doran offers walking and hiking trails, including a 1.3-mile trail through grassy dunes that connects to an ADA-accessible boardwalk with benches and viewing areas. Dogs are allowed on a leash on the beach and in the campground, with a small fee per dog, per night, expanding the park's appeal to pet owners. Accessibility is also a key feature, with ADA-accessible campsites available and all-terrain wheelchairs provided for free use on a first-come, first-served basis.
From a promotional standpoint, Doran Campground is actively marketed as a premier coastal getaway by Sonoma County Regional Parks. Its popularity means "reservations are almost always fully booked during holidays," emphasizing the need for early booking, often up to six months in advance. The ability to sometimes secure a spot due to cancellations is also a useful tip for potential visitors. Promotional materials highlight its family-friendly environment, diverse recreational opportunities, and proximity to Bodega Bay's local dining options and attractions. The park's commitment to accessibility, including ADA-compliant facilities and equipment, is also a significant selling point. The fees include one vehicle per site, with an additional fee for a second non-towed vehicle. Quiet hours are observed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and amplified music is not allowed. Campfires are permitted in designated fire rings, but strict rules apply, including bans during Red Flag Warnings or high wind advisories. The park encourages "Leave No Trace" principles, emphasizing responsible waste management and wildlife protection. While one review mentions the need to cut out some "iceplant" at campsites, overall, the sentiment from visitors is overwhelmingly positive, with many returning "at least once a year." This consistent positive feedback, coupled with its robust amenities and prime coastal location, firmly establishes Doran Campground as a top choice for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in Northern California.

Doran Campground Reviews
In the winter sometimes we get lucky with great weather. It was the best weather for the whole week on the first week of December. Camp sites are great, although they need to cut out some of that iceplant. Bathrooms/showers are great. We go there at least once a year.
Dec 27, 2024 · Steve ScovilleThis place is very popular, so reservations are almost always fully booked during holidays. However, you can sometimes secure a spot due to cancellations from existing reservations. It is well known for crabbing. Kids can enjoy playing on the beach while catching clams and crabs, making it an ideal spot for natural outdoor activities. However, since the campground is surrounded by the sea, it can get quite cold when the wind blows strong. Each spot has a water faucet, a fire pit, and a table available.
Sep 10, 2024 · DanielMy all time favorite place to camp. But don't take my word for it. Here are some pictures! ❤️
Feb 01, 2025 · Jennifer HayesThis is a great place to camp as long as the 24hr "hoon!... hoon!... hoon!..." of the bay safety beacon horn doesn't bother you too much. From the jetty, you can see (and hear) a little island covered in sea-lions. Bring your binoculars and/or super-zoom camera.Fire rings are good quality, and each has a side grate that you can cook on, if you want, though the bars of the grate are wide apart, so place food carefully. This campground was quite a bit more busy and crowded feeling than the smaller one further in the bay, but has a different view from the beach, so both are neat to stay at.If you can, get a site on the outer loop next to the beach, as there isn't much beach view from the inner sites.
Oct 02, 2024 · Taf FishyThis was a great 3 night stop. Really Great of leash dog beach! (when the tide allows) on the bay side. A HUGE beach on the ocean side.I fit my 35' class a in a site marked 26'. It fit fine with our tow vehicle parked in the spot as well...Price was nice, although it was 10 bucks if ya wanted firewood and $2 for a five minute shower.
