Monument Campground Introduce
For local users in Michigan seeking a tranquil and secluded "camping near me" experience immersed in nature and with convenient access to local landmarks, Monument Campground in Oscoda Twp offers an exceptional rustic retreat. Located near the iconic Lumberman's Monument, this campground provides large, private campsites in a peaceful setting, perfect for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of Iosco County. While it caters primarily to tent campers and smaller RVs and does not offer electrical hookups or water supply at the sites, its unique features and serene environment make it a fantastic option for a quiet and unplugged getaway.
One of the most consistently praised aspects of Monument Campground is the size and privacy of its campsites. Visitors have been "pleasantly surprised" by how "large and private" the sites are. This spaciousness allows campers to spread out comfortably and enjoy a sense of seclusion, enhancing the overall feeling of being immersed in nature. One reviewer who visited in October noted that even with a few other sites occupied, they "seldom saw or heard anyone else," emphasizing the quiet and secluded atmosphere of the campground. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking a "camping near me" experience that truly feels like an escape from more crowded campgrounds.
A significant feature of Monument Campground is its close proximity to the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center. This offers campers a unique opportunity to easily access the monument and its surroundings. One reviewer highlighted the "awesome" experience of being able to "walk over there in the morning to see the sunrise hitting the beautiful trees on the other side of the river." This provides a memorable and scenic start to the day. Furthermore, the visitor center offers the bonus of "nice bathrooms" for campers to use, which can be a welcome amenity in a rustic campground setting. The presence of a "gift shop" at the visitor center also provides an opportunity to purchase souvenirs or necessities.
The environment of Monument Campground is described as "rustic" and situated in a "loop style" layout. The absence of electrical hookups and water supply at the campsites reinforces this rustic character, appealing to those who prefer a more traditional camping experience and are comfortable being self-sufficient in these regards. As one reviewer pointed out, "if you're expecting electrical hookups or water supply, you'll be disappointed," but for those who value quiet and spacious sites, the campground is "fantastic." The request to have "no running loud generators please" further underscores the emphasis on maintaining a peaceful and natural ambiance within the campground.
The campground's location also provides easy access to the natural attractions of the area. The Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center is noted to have "very easy trails to lookouts of the Ausable River or Cooke Dam Pond." This offers campers the opportunity to explore the scenic beauty of the Ausable River and the surrounding area through leisurely hikes. The availability of these trails right near the campground adds significant value for those who enjoy walking and taking in natural vistas as part of their "camping near me" experience.
The mention of "tents and smaller size RV" being suitable for the loop-style campsites suggests that while larger RVs might find it challenging to navigate or fit, those with tents or smaller recreational vehicles will find comfortable accommodations. Campers with larger RVs should likely inquire about site suitability before booking.

Its prime location within a five-minute walk of the Lumberman's Monument Visitor Center provides access to scenic views, educational exhibits, and even nice bathroom facilities. Monument Campground Reviews
Pleasantly surprised with the large and private campsites. We were there in October, so there were only a couple other sites occupied, but we seldom saw or heard anyone else and it was so quiet and felt more secluded than it really was.The proximity to the monument was also nice. It was awesome to be able to walk over there in the morning to see the sunrise hitting the beautiful trees on the other side of the river, and the gift shop and nice bathrooms over there were a nice bonus as well.If you're expecting electrical hookups or water supply, you'll be disappointed, but for those that enjoy a very quiet and spacious campsite, this place is fantastic.
Oct 31, 2022 · Josh StevensVery nice rustic campsites. Loop style campsites. Tents and smaller size RV. No electric. And no running loud generators please. Five minute walk to Lumbermans Monument Visitor Center with many exhibits. Very easy trails to lookouts of the Ausable River or Cooke Dam Pond.
Aug 11, 2019 · Bernard CavanaughWould have had a five star for sure but one of the 4 bathrooms was out of service and it was the one directly across from our site. Someone said it has been out of service for a long time.
Sep 04, 2023 · Shelly LanderFun times, make sure to bring lots of wood for a fire, no electricity. If you want to party a little loud make sure to stay in the back.
Jul 31, 2021 · Charles (Chuck)The campground offers lush forest sites located in thicket of skinny, coniferous trees. 🌲 🏕️Each site has a picnic table, a pole to hang lanterns & trash, a fire ring, and a charcoal grill.🔥 ♨️🗑️Gravel driveways. 🚗🚗4-5 vault toilets and water sites.💧Poor cell service. 📞🚫Quiet hours 10PM - 6AM. 🤫A pathway connects to the nearby Monument park.Keep going west to find a trailhead. 🥾Search along highway 65 if you need supplies. ⛽🛒Picture is taken from Monument park.
