North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground

Shingleton, MI 49884, USA

4.0
It's in the middle of nowhere, and it's beautiful! My site overlooked the lake from above, and inspired me! It has sunning views, primitive latrine buildings, and a boat launch. Just don't listen to Google Maps to get here; me and one other person followed Google maps to the State Forest Campgrounds. It took us on a road that shouldn't be called a road, featuring overgrown tire ruts with trees growing between them, and large mud pits. He got stuck and had to pay around $550 for a wilderness tow. I feel like I barely got out of there, zooming over wet pits of potential vehicle-sinking doom. Point is: use the signs posted, not Google Maps. (Even the "good" roads out here are pretty iffy, so have a good vehicle like a pickup or SUV.) This is so worth it. - David Coleman

North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground Introduce

Are you searching for "camping near me" that offers a serene and private escape into nature, perfect for boondocking enthusiasts? North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground, located near Shingleton, MI 49884, USA, might be exactly what you're looking for. Situated "in the middle of nowhere," as one delighted camper described it, this campground within the state forest provides stunning lake views and a sense of secluded tranquility. However, it's crucial for local users to be aware of the access conditions and limited amenities before planning a visit.

The overwhelming positive aspect highlighted by reviewers is the natural beauty and privacy of the location. One camper whose site overlooked the lake from above found it "beautiful!" and even "inspired" them, emphasizing the scenic views. The majority of the campsites are reported to be "on the lake and private," making it an ideal destination for adults seeking a peaceful retreat away from crowded campgrounds.

Environment and Ambiance:

The environment at North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground is characterized by its natural, somewhat remote setting centered around North Gemini Lake. Campers can anticipate "sunning views" of the lake from many sites, creating a picturesque backdrop for their stay. The surrounding state forest likely offers a wooded environment, contributing to the sense of seclusion and providing shade. The absence of significant development further enhances the natural ambiance.

However, the remoteness also comes with a caveat regarding accessibility. Multiple reviewers strongly caution against relying on Google Maps for directions. One camper recounted a harrowing experience of being led onto a severely overgrown and treacherous "road that shouldn't be called a road," resulting in another camper's vehicle getting stuck and requiring an expensive wilderness tow. The advice is clear: "use the signs posted, not Google Maps." Even the "good" roads in the area are described as "pretty iffy," suggesting that a vehicle with good clearance, such as a pickup or SUV, is highly recommended.

The campground is described as being best suited for adults, primarily because there are "no real hiking trails or places to ride bikes" within the immediate vicinity of the campsites, according to one reviewer. This suggests that the focus is more on relaxation, enjoying the lake, and the privacy of the individual campsites rather than extensive recreational activities within the campground itself.

Services and Amenities:

North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground offers very limited, primitive amenities, consistent with a boondocking or off-grid camping experience:

  • Primitive Latrine Buildings: The only restroom facilities mentioned are "primitive latrine buildings," which typically consist of basic, non-flush toilets (like pit toilets or vault toilets). Campers should be prepared for rustic bathroom conditions.
  • Boat Launch: A significant amenity for those wishing to enjoy North Gemini Lake is the presence of a "boat launch." This allows campers to bring their own boats (likely non-motorized or with restrictions depending on lake regulations) for fishing, paddling, or leisurely exploration of the water.
  • Drinkable Water: One reviewer explicitly states, "Yes on drinkable water," indicating that a potable water source is available within the campground, although the location and accessibility might vary.
  • No Electric Hookups: It is clearly stated that there are "NO electric" hookups available at the campsites. Campers relying on electricity will need to bring their own power sources, such as generators or solar setups.
  • No Showers: Similarly, there are "NO showers" at the campground. Campers will need to plan for alternative methods of personal hygiene.
  • No Camper Hookups or Sewage Dumping: For RV campers, there are "NO camper hookups" for water or electricity, and no facilities for "dumping of sewage." This reinforces the boondocking nature of the campground.

The access to the campground is via a "Dirt road," which, as mentioned earlier, can be challenging, especially after rainy weather. A "normal car or rv" is not recommended if rain has been in the forecast. While "small backroad RVs would be fine," even larger RVs (up to 26ft have been seen) reportedly "struggled."

Features and Highlights:

Despite the limited amenities and access challenges, North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground offers unique features that appeal to a specific type of camper:

  • Private Lakefront Campsites: The "Most of the sites are on the lake and private" aspect is a major draw for those seeking solitude and direct access to the water.
  • Stunning Lake Views: The "sunning views" from many campsites provide a beautiful and inspiring natural backdrop.
  • Boat Launch for Lake Access: The availability of a boat launch enhances the recreational opportunities on North Gemini Lake.
  • Peaceful and Remote Setting: Being "in the middle of nowhere" contributes to a quiet and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for escaping the noise and crowds of more developed areas.
  • Excellent for Boondocking: For those who enjoy self-sufficient camping with limited amenities, this campground is "Highly recommend" for its boondocking and privacy.

Promotional Information and Why Choose North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground:

For local users searching for "camping near me" who value privacy, natural beauty, and a true off-grid experience, North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground in Shingleton, Michigan, is a hidden gem worth considering. Imagine waking up to the peaceful sounds of the lake, enjoying your morning coffee with stunning water views from your secluded campsite, and having direct access for boating and fishing on North Gemini Lake.

If you are an experienced camper comfortable with boondocking and prepared for rustic conditions (primitive toilets, no showers, no hookups), this campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The privacy of the campsites ensures a tranquil and undisturbed retreat, perfect for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature.

However, it is absolutely crucial to heed the warnings about directions and vehicle suitability. Rely on posted signs rather than GPS, and ensure you have a vehicle capable of navigating potentially rough dirt roads, especially if there has been recent rainfall. While smaller RVs might be manageable, larger ones are likely to struggle with the terrain.

North Gemini Lake State Forest Campground is ideal for adults looking for a quiet, private lakeside camping experience focused on the natural environment rather than extensive campground amenities or recreational facilities within the campground itself. If you are prepared for self-sufficiency and have the right vehicle, the reward is a beautiful and secluded camping experience in the heart of Michigan's state forest.
