Trapper's Lake Campground

Shingleton, MI 49884, USA

4.0
Went here in April of 2024, great camp site. Right on a lake with gorgeous views. Very peaceful. Not very windy when I was there, plenty of trees to hang a hammock and plenty of space to pitch a tent without feeling too close to other people at the site. Only knocking a star off because the trip planner PDF said to ask at the Visitor Center about water quality at Trapper's Lake and they were closed until the following month😑and I had to walk about a mile to Lake Superior to get water that I would trust wasn't contaminated. Other than that, though, 10/10 would love to go back again in the future. - Cody

Trapper's Lake Campground Introduce

Looking for a tranquil "camping near me" experience in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula? Consider Trapper's Lake Campground, located in Shingleton, MI 49884, USA. Based on recent visitor feedback, this campsite offers a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature, with stunning lake views and a peaceful atmosphere. While some practical considerations exist, the overall experience appears to be highly positive for those seeking a serene outdoor escape.

The Environment: Lakeside Beauty and Proximity to Lake Superior

Trapper's Lake Campground boasts a prime location directly on the shores of Trapper's Lake, offering campers gorgeous waterfront views right from their site. The environment is described as very peaceful, suggesting a setting where you can truly relax and enjoy the natural sounds. The presence of plenty of trees is a notable feature, providing ample shade and opportunities to hang a hammock for ultimate relaxation. Campers have also appreciated the spaciousness of the sites, noting that there is enough room to pitch a tent without feeling crowded by neighboring campers. This sense of space and the natural tree cover contribute to the overall tranquility of the campground.

Adding to the appeal of Trapper's Lake Campground is its proximity to Lake Superior. One reviewer mentioned a short hike to Lake Superior, emphasizing that following trail markers is essential as online maps may not be entirely accurate. This accessibility to the Great Lake offers campers the chance to explore its shores and enjoy its vast beauty. The trail to Lake Superior seems to be a worthwhile addition to the camping experience, providing a change of scenery and further opportunities for enjoying the outdoors.

The surrounding area also appears to be of interest to hikers. The mention of trails to Beaver Lake and Beaver Creek suggests that Trapper's Lake Campground can serve as a base for exploring these nearby natural attractions. One helpful tip from a visitor is to utilize "rabbit trails" next to Lake Superior to save time and distance when heading towards Beaver Lake/Beaver Creek. Additionally, a beach hike is reportedly possible up to the creek, offering another way to experience the landscape.

Services and Features: A Natural Camping Experience

Based on the available information, Trapper's Lake Campground seems to offer a more traditional camping experience focused on the natural environment. While specific amenities aren't detailed, the emphasis on the lakefront location, spacious sites, and tree cover suggests a focus on providing a natural and relatively secluded camping setting. Campers should likely be prepared for a more rustic experience, although the positive reviews indicate that the beauty of the location more than compensates for any potentially basic facilities.

One important point raised by a reviewer concerns water availability and quality. The trip planner PDF reportedly advised checking with the Visitor Center about the water quality at Trapper's Lake. However, the Visitor Center was closed during the reviewer's April visit. This led the camper to walk approximately a mile to Lake Superior to obtain water they felt was safe. This suggests that campers should potentially plan to bring their own water or be prepared to source it from Lake Superior if the water quality at Trapper's Lake is uncertain and the Visitor Center is not accessible.

Despite this issue, the reviewer still rated the campsite highly, indicating that the overall experience was positive. The availability of space for pitching a tent and hanging a hammock are features that contribute to a comfortable and enjoyable stay for those who appreciate a more natural camping style.

Features and Activities: Lakeside Relaxation and Exploration

Trapper's Lake Campground appears to offer a range of activities centered around its natural setting:

  • Lake Activities: Being right on Trapper's Lake, campers can likely enjoy activities such as swimming (water quality permitting), kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water's edge and taking in the gorgeous views.
  • Hiking: The proximity to Lake Superior and trails leading to Beaver Lake and Beaver Creek provide opportunities for hiking and exploring the surrounding natural landscape. Following trail markers is advised for accurate navigation.
  • Relaxation: The peaceful environment and ample space, along with the availability of trees for hammocks, make this a great place to unwind and enjoy the tranquility of nature.
  • Wildlife Viewing: Being in a natural area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, there are likely opportunities for observing local wildlife.

The advice regarding the dunes at Beaver Creek – to use the stairs on the right by the creek rather than hiking the dunes – is a useful tip for those planning to explore that area, suggesting that there are specific trails and recommended routes to follow to preserve the natural environment.
