Twelvemile Beach Campground Introduce
Are you searching for exceptional "camping near me" with breathtaking lakeside views and the soothing sounds of Lake Superior? Look no further than Twelvemile Beach Campground, nestled in the picturesque area of Grand Marais, MI 49839, USA. This campground offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty of Michigan's Upper Peninsula with well-maintained campsites and direct access to the stunning shores of Lake Superior. Based on recent reviews from fellow campers, Twelvemile Beach Campground provides a memorable outdoor experience, although potential visitors should be aware of certain environmental factors and campground policies.
The overwhelming sentiment from visitors is that Twelvemile Beach Campground is a "Beautiful place!" The allure of lakeside camping is undeniable, offering a chance to wake up to the expansive views of Lake Superior and spend your days exploring its shores. The campground seems to cater to those seeking a natural escape with the convenience of organized campsites.
Environment and Ambiance:
The primary environmental highlight of Twelvemile Beach Campground is its proximity to Lake Superior. Campers can expect "Beautiful lakeside camping" with many sites offering easy access to the beach. One reviewer specifically mentioned a "Two minute walk to beach" from their "woods side of the loop" campsite (Site 34), indicating a variety of camping environments within the campground, some closer to the water and others more secluded in the woods.
The beach itself is described as "amazing for long walks and sunsets," suggesting a vast and scenic shoreline perfect for leisurely strolls and enjoying the spectacular sunsets over Lake Superior. The open expanse of the lake and the surrounding natural landscape contribute to a sense of tranquility and natural beauty.
However, the environment also presents potential challenges. One reviewer noted that "great winds coming off of Lake Superior" can occur, and during adverse weather conditions like strong winds or rain, "they close the beaches for dangerous water conditions." This highlights the importance of checking the weather forecast before planning a trip and being prepared for potential disruptions to beach access and water activities like kayaking. The unpredictable nature of Lake Superior weather should be a key consideration for visitors.
Another environmental factor to be aware of, particularly during certain times of the year, is the presence of mosquitoes. One reviewer who visited during the first week of June mentioned that while "The beach was fine," the mosquitoes in the "woods at my site" were "heavy." They wisely advise bringing "good bug protection" to mitigate this issue, which is common in wooded areas of the Upper Peninsula, especially during the early summer months.
Services and Amenities:
Based on the available reviews, the services and amenities at Twelvemile Beach Campground appear to be focused on providing well-maintained campsites and access to the natural environment. Specific mentions include:
- Well-Taken Care Of Campsites: Multiple reviewers praise the condition of the campsites, indicating that they are regularly maintained and kept in good order. This contributes to a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience.
- Spacious Sites: One reviewer described the sites as "Nice quite sites with lots of space," suggesting that campers have ample room to set up their tents or RVs and enjoy some privacy.
- Beach Access: The campground's key feature is its direct and easy access to Twelvemile Beach on Lake Superior, making it ideal for beach lovers and those wanting to enjoy the lake.
However, one significant amenity that is explicitly noted as missing is "bear boxes." The campground "recommend keeping food in car" as a precaution against attracting wildlife. This is an important safety guideline that visitors must adhere to, especially when camping in areas with potential bear activity. Proper food storage is crucial for the safety of both campers and wildlife.
The reviews do not mention the availability of other common campground amenities such as restrooms, showers, water hookups, or electrical service. Therefore, potential visitors should be prepared for potentially rustic conditions and plan accordingly, possibly needing to be self-sufficient for certain needs.
Features and Highlights:
Twelvemile Beach Campground boasts several appealing features that attract campers:
- Lakeside Location on Lake Superior: The prime location directly on the shore of one of the Great Lakes offers stunning views, beach access, and the unique experience of camping by a vast freshwater lake.
- Beautiful Beach for Walks and Sunsets: The beach is highlighted as being perfect for long, scenic walks and enjoying the breathtaking sunsets over Lake Superior, a major draw for photographers and nature lovers.
- Quiet and Spacious Campsites: The combination of quiet surroundings and ample space at the campsites allows for a more relaxed and private camping experience.
- Variety of Campsite Environments: The mention of "woods side of the loop" sites in addition to the proximity to the beach suggests a range of campsite settings to suit different preferences.
- Potential for Water Activities: While kayaking was hindered by weather during one reviewer's visit, the lake location offers potential for various water activities when conditions are favorable.

Twelvemile Beach Campground Reviews
What a Beautiful place!Campsites are well taken care of. Unfortunately the weather was not great when we visited with great winds coming off of Lake Superior. If wind or rain is in the forecast I would advise it is not worth it to come out, they close the beaches for dangerous water conditions. We weren’t able to kayak either. We didn’t have any issues with this but one thing to note is no bear boxes, they recommend keeping food in car.
Jul 12, 2024 · Jordan MarshallBeautiful lakeside camping. (Site 34 woods side of the loop.) Two minute walk to beach. Nice quite sites with lots of space. Beach is amazing for long walks and sunsets. The one negative were the mosquitoes!!!! The beach was fine but in the woods at my site they were heavy. That said what would you expect for first week in June. Just bring good bug protection and you’ll be fine.
Jun 07, 2023 · Brendan BrownTwelve mile beach campground was serenity, blissful just heavenly! So peaceful and quiet. The camp host was incredible and so friendly. The campsite itself was very clean with ample space. The bathrooms were amazingly clean, but at night make sure you take a flash light. Staff clean the bathrooms regularly. We stayed at campsite 2 which was conveniently located right next to the bathroom with a boardwalk leading to it, but still had plenty of privacy. The steps to the beach were just across the street but still had privacy. During the day we went hiking to Ausable light house which was a super nice easy walk. This whole place was incredible.
Jun 22, 2022 · Deborah WilliamsWhat a great place to camp! We arrived on a Wednesday (July 4th) at 10am and there was only 2 spots available which we expected with the high demand of the 34 sites. Over the next couple mornings there was 5 to 10 open sites available each morning. There are post at each site that says when the campers are planning on checking out. The bugs were really bad our first night, but from what I hear is normal during this time of the year, but over night northern winds came in and blew them inland. The weather was amazing 80's and 50s at night. The camp site was great, I really liked the fire pits and how they adjust easily, there was also a picnic table and lantern hook. There is running water but we didn't use it because we brought enough for the 4 days we were there. I would recommend that everyone would stay here, if you don't find a spot then there are several other camp grounds close. If you need firewood there are several local people that sell it within 5 miles of the campsites. And there is a county store 10 or so miles down the road.
Jul 09, 2018 · Levi MartinThe far western edge of twelvemile Beach is where the trail to the Au Sable light station begins. Such a pretty beach and apparently there's twelve miles of it to explore so enjoy.
