South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground Introduce
For local outdoor enthusiasts in and around Shingleton, Michigan, searching within the "camping near me" category, South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground, located in Shingleton, MI 49884, offers a potentially serene lakeside camping experience within the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Based on available user reviews, this campground appears to be particularly appealing for those seeking a quiet, nature-focused getaway with opportunities for fishing. However, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of the current condition of the associated hiking trail.
Environment: South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground benefits from its location within a Michigan State Forest, suggesting a natural and potentially wooded environment. The presence of Gemini Lake as a central feature implies that many campsites might offer direct or easy access to the water. One reviewer specifically mentioned securing a large campsite right on the water, highlighting the potential for picturesque lakeside camping. The environment likely offers a sense of tranquility and immersion in nature, away from more developed or crowded campgrounds. While the reviews don't explicitly detail the types of trees or surrounding landscape, typical Michigan State Forests feature a mix of deciduous and coniferous trees, contributing to a diverse and scenic environment throughout the seasons.
The mention of a "weekend fishing trip" and the successful catch of Pike and Smallmouth Bass directly from the shore indicates that South Gemini Lake is a significant environmental feature and a draw for anglers. The ability to fish directly from a lakeside campsite adds considerable appeal for those who enjoy this activity. The reviewer's use of a two-person inflatable fishing raft suggests that the lake is suitable for small watercraft, further enhancing recreational opportunities.
It's worth noting the reviewer's comment about "bugs being bad," which is a common experience in many lakeside and forested environments, particularly during the summer months. This suggests that visitors should come prepared with appropriate insect repellent and potentially screening solutions, as the reviewer themselves was prompted to purchase an enclosed screen tent after their visit.
Services and Features: Based on the limited information and the nature of many Michigan State Forest campgrounds, we can infer some likely services and features at South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground:
- Campsites: The reviewer mentioned the availability of "big ones right on the water" and having their "pick of all the campsites" during their July visit. This suggests the presence of multiple campsites of varying sizes, some with direct lake access. The total number of sites and whether they are primarily for tents or also accommodate small trailers or RVs is not specified.
- Picnic Tables: The reviewer noted that "most of these state forest campgrounds have picnic tables," implying that each campsite at South Gemini Lake likely includes a picnic table for convenient outdoor dining and meal preparation.
- Restrooms: One review explicitly states that the "Restrooms are clean," which is a significant positive for any campground. The type of restrooms (e.g., vault toilets, flush toilets with running water) is not mentioned, but the cleanliness is a notable feature.
- Boat Access: The successful use of an inflatable fishing raft suggests that there is likely some form of access to Gemini Lake for small boats, although a formal boat launch is not explicitly mentioned. Shoreline access appears to be readily available from some campsites.
- Fishing Opportunities: As highlighted by the positive fishing experience, the lake offers opportunities to catch Pike and Smallmouth Bass. Anglers should ensure they have the necessary Michigan fishing licenses and are aware of any regulations specific to Gemini Lake.
However, based on the negative review regarding the South Gemini Pathway, it's important to note a significant potential drawback for those interested in hiking:
- South Gemini Pathway Condition: The trail is described as being in "really bad shape." Specific issues include a rotted bridge that is essentially non-existent and another bridge that is dangerously loose. The trail is also reported to be "quite overgrown" with markings that are "hard to find if they are even there." This indicates a trail that is currently hazardous and not recommended for use without significant caution and potentially not at all in its current state. The reviewer expresses disappointment as it "looks like it was a nice trail before it fell into disrepair" and notes that it "needs soy major TLC."
Other potential services and features common in state forest campgrounds, but not specifically mentioned for South Gemini Lake, could include:
- Fire rings or designated areas for campfires at each site.
- Potable water sources (though not explicitly confirmed).
- Trash receptacles (though not explicitly confirmed).
- Potentially vault toilets in addition to the mentioned "clean restrooms."
Services like electrical hookups, RV dump stations, or playgrounds are less common in more rustic state forest campgrounds and are not mentioned in the reviews, so their presence is unlikely unless further information becomes available.
Promotional Information: No specific promotional information, such as discounts, seasonal rates, or special offers, is mentioned in the provided data. Michigan State Forest campgrounds typically operate on a fee basis, and reservations might be required or recommended, especially during peak seasons. For local users interested in camping at South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground, it would be essential to contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or visit their official website to inquire about camping fees, reservation procedures, and any current advisories or updates regarding the campground and the South Gemini Pathway. The provided phone number, (906) 341-2355 or +1 906-341-2355, might connect to a local DNR office that could provide more specific information about this campground.
Recommendations for Local Users: For those in the Shingleton area or planning a trip to the Upper Peninsula and searching for "camping near me," South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground offers the allure of lakeside camping and good fishing opportunities. The quiet and natural environment, as suggested by the reviews, could be ideal for a relaxing getaway. However, potential visitors must be aware of the reported poor condition of the South Gemini Pathway and exercise extreme caution or avoid it altogether until it is repaired. Contacting the Michigan DNR for the most current information on campground status, fees, reservations, and trail conditions is highly recommended before planning a visit.
In conclusion, South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground appears to be a quiet, lakeside campground near Shingleton, Michigan, particularly suited for fishing enthusiasts. The campsites, some directly on the water, offer a pleasant setting with picnic tables, and the restrooms are noted as clean. However, the significant disrepair of the South Gemini Pathway is a serious consideration for hikers. Local users should prioritize contacting the Michigan DNR for the latest updates and to make reservations if necessary, ensuring a safe and enjoyable camping experience while being mindful of the trail conditions.

South Gemini Lake State Forest Campground Reviews
A little late to this review as we went back in July, but my girlfriend and myself had an amazing time here for a little weekend fishing trip!We were lucky enough to have our pick of all the campsites, and took one of the big ones right on the water. We couldn’t have asked for a better set up. Bugs were bad but we knew that coming in. I’ve slowly been adding to my camping arsenal, and this trip is what pushed me to finally get an enclosed screen tent. Most of these state forest campgrounds have picnic tables, so I figure next time I can just put the screened in tent right over that and eat/cook without getting attacked.Fishing was amazing! We had a 2 person blow up fishing raft and caught a solid amount of Pike and Smallmouths. Pike were all small, but my girlfriend caught one of the biggest smallies I’ve seen in person, and it was right from the shore at our campsite! It was an amazing trip, and we will definitely be back.
Feb 09, 2025 · Joe FudaczCampground are nice & quiet. Restrooms are clean. South Gemini Pathway is in really bad shape. One bridge is so rotted its not really there and other is so loose it is a hazard.Trail is quite overgrown & markings are hard to find if they are even there. Too bad cause it looks like it was a nice trail before it fell into disrepair. It needs soy major TLC
Aug 30, 2024 · TracieGreat Campground on the quiet side of lake. 8 sites total on small loop. It is rustic but what we love. The vault toilet were extremely clean for what they are. We had site 4 right on the water. Plenty of room for my 28 motorhome. Site 5 on water. Boat launch for no motorized. The guys were catching fish. Dirt road was good going slow towing my kia soul. Heavy rains made traveling adventurous or challenging depending on how you look at things. Dried up in a day or two. No service which is good. 6 mile dirt road took about half hour out to paved road and the middle section of Pictured Rocks. Munising to the left Grand Marquis to the right.
Sep 08, 2020 · Ziglerson TravelsQuiet campground with 9 sites on the south side of Gemini Lake. Sites 4 and 5 sit right on the water and offer great views. Lake was very quiet with a few homes on it, great for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. There are 2 pit toilets here that were hands down the cleanest ones I have ever used, like brand new! There is a 1.6 mile hiking loop that leaves right from the park, which offers lake views most of the hike. There are some downed trees and it has not been maintained well, but still a good hike. Lots of fresh blueberries to pick on the way. If this campground is full there are 3 others that are very close by (within 10 minutes). There is no cell service, but there is good signage indicating how to get to all of the nearby campgrounds, which are also on small lakes.
Sep 06, 2023 · Alyssa BattleA very beautiful spot to camp. No water except a well pump, no electric and no dump station. There are vaulted toilets but bring your own TP.Price went up to $20 which is pretty discouraging since they don't really keep the campground maintained. The site had a lot of garbage on it.There is a trail right from the campground, but it is not maintained at all. All the guide post have fallen over or decayed away... Be prepared to turn around because the ramps are wore down and you will soak your shoes. The mosquitoes are really bad! The swarms of them make it unbearable to hike. It was cold out when we went, but as soon as it got warm, we had to leave.
