Old Shady Rest Campground Introduce
For local users in the Mammoth Lakes, CA area searching for "Camping Near Me," Old Shady Rest Campground stands out as a highly recommended and exceptionally well-located option. Situated on Sawmill Road, just a stone's throw from the vibrant Mammoth Lakes Village, this campground offers a unique blend of immersive natural beauty and unparalleled convenience. Managed by the Inyo National Forest, Old Shady Rest provides a comfortable and feature-rich camping experience for both tents and RVs, making it a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
The environment at Old Shady Rest Campground is truly picturesque, defined by its towering "tall lovely pine trees" that provide ample shade and a classic forest ambiance. The campsites are nestled beneath these majestic trees, creating a serene and private atmosphere despite the campground's proximity to town. The setting is ideal for nature lovers, with the crisp mountain air and the sounds of the forest creating a relaxing backdrop for your stay. Reviewers consistently highlight the "amazing" natural surroundings, offering a sense of being deep in the wilderness while still having modern conveniences nearby. While the campground is forested, it's worth noting that "a few ant holes" have been observed around tent setup areas, a minor detail to be aware of in any natural environment. The overall impression is one of a clean, well-maintained, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor space that truly embodies the spirit of Sierra Nevada camping.
In terms of services, Old Shady Rest Campground provides a high level of comfort and convenience for a national forest campground. A standout feature is the presence of "clean restrooms" with "flush toilets," a significant upgrade from the vault toilets often found in more primitive sites. Each campsite is well-equipped with a "fire pit" for evening campfires (when conditions allow and with a valid fire permit), a "picnic table" for outdoor dining, and a "good size bear box" for secure food storage. This latter amenity is particularly crucial given that Mammoth Lakes is active bear country. Potable water is readily available throughout the campground. The campground also benefits from the presence of "Amazing Camp Host, Mike and Trudy," as enthusiastically noted by a past guest. These hosts are invaluable, providing assistance, answering questions "with kindness," and offering helpful directions to "best trails, restaurants and more." This level of on-site support greatly enhances the camper's experience, providing a personal touch that sets Old Shady Rest apart.
Old Shady Rest Campground boasts a wide array of features that cater to diverse interests. Its prime location is arguably its most significant feature. Being "close to town" and having "shopping nearby" means campers have easy access to groceries, restaurants, gear rentals, and other urban amenities without sacrificing the natural camping experience. Crucially, "hiking trails right out your door" offer immediate access to the extensive trail network of the Inyo National Forest, providing opportunities for leisurely strolls or challenging backcountry excursions. The campground is also directly adjacent to the Town of Mammoth Lakes’ paved multi-use path system, which provides excellent opportunities for biking and walking. The campground is "dog friendly," allowing furry companions to join in the adventure, though they must be kept on a leash. The size of the campsites is generally considered "good size," offering ample space for tents or RVs. The affordability of the campsites, described as "pretty cheap too," makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers looking for a quality camping experience. The combination of easy access to wilderness trails and urban conveniences makes Old Shady Rest an exceptionally versatile base for exploring the Mammoth Lakes area.
For those considering a trip, some promotional and practical information about Old Shady Rest Campground is essential. The campground typically operates seasonally, usually from late spring (around mid-May or early June) through the fall (around mid-October), depending on snowmelt and weather conditions. It's always best to confirm exact opening and closing dates with the Inyo National Forest. While some reviews mention "plenty of spots" available during their visit, reservations are highly recommended, especially during peak summer months, weekends, and holidays, as this is a very popular campground. Reservations can typically be made through Recreation.gov, and booking well in advance (up to six months) is advisable to secure a desired site. Fees for campsites are generally competitive, contributing to its "cheap" reputation, but specific rates should be checked on Recreation.gov. The maximum length of stay is usually 14 days. The campground can accommodate a range of RVs, though specific site dimensions vary, and it's always wise to check site details when making a reservation. The excellent reputation of the camp hosts and the clean facilities are frequently cited reasons why visitors, like the one who "stayed for 10 days" and plans to "defiantly be back," return year after year. For current conditions, fire restrictions, and any alerts, contacting the Inyo National Forest at (760) 873-2400 or checking their official website is recommended. Old Shady Rest Campground truly delivers on its promise of a comfortable and convenient camping experience at the heart of the magnificent Eastern Sierra.

Old Shady Rest Campground Reviews
Loved this campground! We stayed for 10 days and still did not get to see or visit all the places we wanted to. Amazing Camp Host , Mike and Trudy answered every question with kindness, helped in directing us to some of the best trails, restaurants and more. Clean restrooms, dog friendly, fire pit, picnic table, good size bear box, hiking trails right out your door, shopping near by. We will defiantly be back.
Sep 08, 2023 · Karen CunninghamReally nice camp ground! There were plenty of spots when i was there. Lots of tall lovely pine trees. It was pretty cheap too, fire pits and flush toilets. I really enjoyed my stay there! It's also close to town. Just be careful setting up tents, there were a few ant holes around.
Jun 17, 2018 · IDon'tWannaBeMe1231234I love camping. Reconnecting with the quiet solitude of nature to fully relax and disconnect from city life is truly magical... however being woken up by pounding live rock music at 11:30 PM for two nights in a row is kinda harshing my vibe. I can't advise anyone camp here unless they plan to be out til 2 AM partying... for everyone else, there's got to be better places in Mammoth. And there are absolutely better places in California. Will be returning to work next week even more tired and burnt out than before. It's a shame because the grounds themselves are really nice.
Sep 01, 2024 · Alex BelzerOne of the best camping places in Mammoth lakes. Well maintained and close to the town. The toilets were clean and had good lighting. Would love to come again next year :)
Oct 01, 2022 · SharathFirst time here and we loved it. The bathrooms are kept pretty clean and so is the site. It was quiet and the host (the guy) didn’t get his name was very accommodating !
