Twin Lakes Campground Introduce
For those seeking an unforgettable outdoor adventure in the heart of the Eastern Sierra, Twin Lakes Campground in Mammoth Lakes, California, stands out as a premier destination under the "Camping Near Me" category. Located at 518 Twin Lakes Rd, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546, USA, this popular campground offers a captivating blend of stunning natural beauty, convenient amenities, and a wealth of recreational opportunities. As one of the lowest lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, Twin Lakes is accessible year-round by car and serves as a bustling hub of activity during the warmer months, making it a highly desirable spot for families, anglers, hikers, and all outdoor enthusiasts.
The environment at Twin Lakes Campground is truly picturesque. It is nestled within a beautiful lodgepole pine forest, providing ample partial shade and a sense of privacy at many of its campsites. The campground derives its name from the two stunning lakes it borders, which are uniquely connected by the impressive Twin Falls, a cascading waterfall that tumbles into one of the lakes, creating a scenic backdrop. The area sits at an elevation of 8,600 feet at the base of the majestic, snow-capped Mammoth Mountain, adding to the dramatic alpine scenery. The mountains surrounding Twin Lakes are teeming with diverse wildlife, including black bears, mountain lions, mule deer, pine martens, pikas, and various species of fish and birds. Visitors are consistently reminded that this is active bear country, and each campsite is equipped with bear-proof food storage lockers, which campers are required to utilize to protect both their food and the local wildlife.
Twin Lakes Campground provides a comprehensive array of services and amenities designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The campground is a large facility with approximately 94 to 95 sites, split into different sections, some closer to the shore and others set on a hill, offering varied perspectives of the surrounding landscape. Each spacious campsite comes with a picnic table and a campfire ring, perfect for meals and evening gatherings. Essential facilities include clean restrooms with flush toilets and readily available potable drinking water from pressurized spigots distributed throughout the grounds. While the campground itself does not offer RV hookups, a significant advantage for campers at Twin Lakes is the presence of a convenient on-site general store. This store is a treasure trove for campers, providing not only basic supplies and fishing tackle but also offering boat rentals and, notably, paid shower facilities and a fish-cleaning station. The campground is typically open from late May or early June through October, depending on snow conditions and weather, making it crucial to check opening and closing dates when planning your trip.
The features and activities available at and around Twin Lakes Campground are truly abundant, cementing its reputation as a top choice for "Camping Near Me" searches. For fishing enthusiasts, Twin Lakes is a prime location for trout fishing, with rainbow, brook, and brown trout commonly found. Anglers can enjoy casting from the shore, particularly near the bridge at Lower Twin Lake, or take an inflatable or non-motorized boat out onto the calm waters. The area is renowned for regularly stocking trophy-sized Alpers trout, enhancing the fishing experience. Beyond fishing, the campground serves as an excellent base for hiking. Several trails, including a 4-mile trail on Mammoth Mountain and shorter nature trails along the lakes, cater to various skill levels. Reviews often highlight the "gorgeous trees and beautiful trails" available for exploration.
One of the unique features that truly elevates the Twin Lakes experience, as highlighted by customer reviews, is the availability of a free trolley ride. This trolley provides convenient access around the Lakes Basin and offers "historic story-time" on the way to the lake, making it an enjoyable and informative activity for both kids and adults. This added convenience means campers can easily explore the wider Mammoth Lakes Basin without constantly relying on their vehicles. The proximity to the town of Mammoth Lakes also offers a significant advantage, providing access to additional amenities such as shopping, restaurants, and other services. Visitors frequently mention the convenience of the on-site general store and the ease of access to other attractions. The opportunity for kayaking, paddleboarding, and even e-biking (as mentioned by a customer) further diversifies the recreational options. The overall ambiance is often described as peaceful and idyllic, with one reviewer feeling "like tepees and Indians used to surround the waters in the past," and praising how the lodge and campgrounds are "snuggled beautifully into the wilderness feel of the area."
Regarding promotional information and booking, Twin Lakes Campground is incredibly popular, often boasting a high reservation rate, with some reports indicating it is booked about 92% of the time during peak season. This popularity means that securing a campsite, especially for high-demand weekends or during the peak summer months, requires early planning. Reservations can typically be made up to six months in advance via Recreation.gov. While specific promotional "packages" are not typically offered for Forest Service campgrounds, the consistent positive reviews and the campground's desirable location act as strong incentives. Customer testimonials frequently praise the helpfulness of the staff, such as the "absolutely wonderful" recreation coordinator Trudy, who went above and beyond to assist campers in finding last-minute availability. The average nightly rate for a campsite is approximately $18.58 to $20.35, though it's always advisable to check Recreation.gov for the most current pricing and reservation details. The peace of mind offered by knowing that facilities are clean and well-maintained, as noted by visitors who found the "clean bathrooms" to be a highlight, further enhances the appeal of Twin Lakes. The overall experience of "barbecuing by the lake" and enjoying "spacious" campsites under the "gorgeous trees" reinforces why Twin Lakes Campground is a highly recommended and frequently revisited destination for anyone searching for "Camping Near Me" in California's majestic Eastern Sierra.

Twin Lakes Campground Reviews
My family and I were a massive group of two cars— driving from Irvine, CA to Mammoth Mountain on a Friday evening in July at 8pm —it goes without saying, there were VERY sparse sites available. We called the recreation coordinator at Twin Lakes to figure out where to go and Trudy was absolutely wonderful. She helped us with finding a space last minute with very minimal availability. We were all stressed because we had come so far and it was late, but she did not let us down! She contacted various camp hosts for us, despite poor phone connection, and figured out which site had space to accommodate our group. She gave us very clear instructions including how to pay for the site and how to get there, . There’s no way to reserve a spot that late, and it is first come first serve, so she also gave us some backup options if all else failed. We would have been completely lost without her. Thank you Trudy @ Inyo Recreation. As for the campground, we had an AMAZING weekend!! We took our inflatable boat out on the water, and barbecued by the lake. There was even a free trolley ride with a historic story-time on the way to the lake it was very fun for kids and adults. The campground was spacious. We enjoyed the gorgeous trees and beautiful trails. Clean bathrooms and a nice convenience store on site. I would definitely recommend. A great place for families, and everyone else!

The lodge and campgrounds were snuggled beautifully into the wilderness feel of the area 💕We spent the day kayaking on the lake... next time, e-bikes! And, there's peaceful hiking trails as well 🚶🏼♀️Will definitely be going back (which wasn't our plan before we saw Twin Lakes!!
Nov 10, 2024 · Toni EshomWe loved this campground. Great Lake to fish and do activities. Beautiful scenery 👌
Jan 18, 2025 · Saira CovarrubiasThe rooms at the lodge are comfortable but small and don't have attached bathrooms/toilets. The cottages are a better option for a family. The lodge itself is a 100 years old and quaint. Love the atmosphere and ambiance, and you couldn't beat the location or the views of mammoth mountain and the surrounding areas.
Jun 02, 2024 · Vikram KarumbaiahGreat camp sites. Friendly host and friendly people at the convenience store located within walking distance from all the sites. Shower price is a bit steep, but convenience is always pricey. Bathrooms were cleaned daily.
