The environment surrounding Paint Rock Spring Campground is characterized by its natural beauty, including areas of tree cover that provide shade and separation between campsites. One reviewer noted that the campsites were "nicely spaced" and offered some natural cover from both neighboring sites and the sun, suggesting a degree of privacy and comfort. The presence of a river nearby indicates opportunities for riverside activities and potentially scenic hiking trails. However, it's crucial to be aware of the insect situation, as multiple reviewers reported significant issues with mosquitoes and flies, particularly during hiking near the river. One camper described the bugs as "probably the worst I've seen," emphasizing the need for insect repellent and protective clothing, especially during certain times of the year. Despite this, the overall natural environment is described as "amazing," with a highlight being the fire tower offering "amazing views" of the surrounding landscape. The opportunity to potentially observe wildlife, such as a black bear family, further underscores the natural richness of the area.

The process of obtaining firewood is described as "seamless," and the staff are commended for being "extremely helpful," indicating a positive level of customer service. A significant feature of the campground is the fire tower, which is accessible to visitors. Climbing the fire tower is highlighted as a "big highlight" and offers panoramic views. However, it's important to note that the steps are steep, and while there are railings, caution is advised during the ascent and descent.
While the positive aspects of the campground include spacious campsites, essential facilities, and the unique fire tower experience, some drawbacks were also noted by visitors. One reviewer pointed out that the tent areas were "not well designed," with uneven ground. This could impact the comfort of tent campers and might require careful selection of a campsite or the use of leveling techniques. The issue with insects, particularly mosquitoes and flies, seems to be a significant concern, especially during certain times of the year. While one reviewer acknowledged that it might have been a particularly bad year for bugs, the consistent mention of this issue suggests that potential visitors should come prepared with insect repellent and appropriate clothing to mitigate the problem.

Paint Rock Spring Campground Reviews
I camped here with my fiance and a couple friends. The campsites were nicely spaced and we were fortunate to have some covering from other sites and the sun. The bathrooms were nearby and had everything we needed (shower, sinks, etc.) and there was a fun activity calendar posted in the bathroom for the weekend. We went to the fire tower and that was a big highlight. There are railings but the steps are steep, so be careful. We went on a hike as well near the river. Be more mindful than us because the bugs were probably the worst I've seen. I typically get bit a lot regardless, but everyone in the group was eaten alive by mosquitoes. I don't fault the campground because it's been a bad year for them but be wary. Our experience getting wood was seamless and staff were extremely helpful. Overall, 5 stars from me!
Sep 03, 2023 · Adam MorganNature is amazing. You should visit the fire tower and climb up. Amazing view. We saw a black bear family way back after visiting the fire tower. Tent areas are not well designed. The ground wasn't even. There are horrible flies and very cruel mosquitos. The camping area was crowded but people were not noisy.

Aug 14, 2023 · Tusmitha GunabalanNice and quiet we were the only ones in that camp ground that weekend probably because of weather 4 other families in other camp grounds within St. Croix State Park. But we love this park.
