Peconic River Campground falls under the "camping near me" category for those who appreciate a more natural and less developed camping environment. Based on feedback from previous visitors, this campground offers a distinct experience characterized by its natural beauty and certain rustic amenities. It's important for potential campers to be aware of the specific features and limitations to ensure it aligns with their expectations for "camping near me."
Environment and Scenery:
The campground's environment is highlighted by its picturesque view of Peconic Lake. Campers can enjoy the tranquil sight of the lake, which serves as a backdrop for relaxation and outdoor activities. The presence of hawks fishing over the lake adds to the natural charm and provides opportunities for wildlife observation. While swimming in the lake is not permitted, the view itself contributes significantly to the peaceful ambiance of the campground. The surrounding area includes some marshy sections, particularly noticeable after rain, so campers should be mindful of this when choosing their campsite and navigating the grounds.
Services and Facilities:
Peconic River Campground offers a more rustic camping experience compared to some larger, more developed campgrounds. Key services and facilities include:
- No Electric Hookup: This is a significant point for campers relying on electricity for their RVs or other equipment. Be prepared for off-grid camping with alternative power sources if needed.
- Amazing Well Water Access: Campers consistently praise the quality of the well water available at the campground, noting it to be superior to city water.
- Individual Fire Pits: A notable feature is the abundance of wonderful little fire pits scattered throughout the campground, providing a dedicated space for campfires and cooking at each site.
- Porta-Potties: Restroom facilities are provided in the form of porta-potties. While some reviewers noted a typical porta-potty smell, they also mentioned that the facilities were kept clean. It's advisable for campers to bring their own hygiene supplies like wipes and toilet paper as a precaution.
- Shower (Potentially Cold): A shower facility is available, but at least one reviewer noted that the water was cold. Campers who value warm showers might need to consider this or plan accordingly.
- Pet-Friendly: Dogs are permitted at the campground. However, it is strongly recommended that pets be kept on a leash, particularly due to the presence of swans that may come onto land.
The campground is privately owned, and check-in is reported to be easy, often handled via a simple phone call with the friendly owner, Taylor.
Features and Activities:
While Peconic River Campground emphasizes a more natural and relaxed camping experience, it offers several features and opportunities for activities:
- Lakeside Views: Enjoy the serene views of Peconic Lake, perfect for morning tea or simply unwinding in nature.
- Wildlife Observation: The presence of hawks and swans offers opportunities for observing local wildlife.
- Campfires: The provided fire pits encourage traditional camping experiences like gathering around a fire for warmth, cooking, and storytelling.
- Pet Exploration: The campground is pet-friendly, allowing dogs to explore and meet other canine companions (while leashed).
- Peaceful Atmosphere: Many reviewers highlight the peaceful and quiet ambiance of the campground, often lulled by the sounds of owls and crickets at night.
While swimming in the lake is not an option, the campground's proximity to the Peconic River and the broader Long Island area might offer opportunities for other water-based activities or exploration a short drive away.
Promotional Information and Local Context:

The campground's location in Calverton provides access to the eastern part of Long Island, which is known for its natural beauty, including the Peconic River and nearby Long Island Sound. While the campground itself focuses on a more basic camping experience, its location allows for potential exploration of the surrounding region, including:

Given its private ownership, it might be worthwhile to contact the campground directly at the provided phone numbers to inquire about any seasonal rates or special offers that may be available during your planned visit.
Why Choose Peconic River Campground for "Camping Near Me"?

Peconic River Campground Reviews
Cute little privately owned campground. Nice view of Peconic Lake. Sadly no swimming in the lake. No electric hookup, and amazing well water access. Much better than city water. Be careful of the marsh during the rain, lol. So many wonderful little fire pits dotted around the campgrounds. Dogs are permitted, I just highly recommend that they be leashed, just in case the swans decide to come on land.
Jul 18, 2024 · Alicia Chylde (Darkie)This was everything I expected it to be and better. It was rustic and peaceful. We appreciated the fire pit because we opted to leave our portable one home. There were porta-potties (yes smelly but it was clean and I brought wipes to clean the seat, as well as brought my own toilet paper even though there was some in there) a shower (I didn't use it but heard it was cold). I've learned after years of camping to not put total cleanliness and hygiene expectations into others hands, so I make sure to bring what I need.Having a morning cup of tea looking out over Peconic Lake watching the hawks catch fish was so relaxing. Our dog was so thrilled to meet other dogs and explore sniff spots.I see another reviewer complained about traffic noise. Well it's Long Island and difficult to get away from that, but even the train didn't bother me. I found the place to be quiet and peaceful with the occasional noise from civilization. I was lulled to sleep by an owl and crickets. How can you beat that?! Taylor was friendly and it was easy checking in with just a phone call he answered right away. Definitely will be back.
Aug 28, 2023 · Liz GoldnerBeautiful place with amazing staff. Very relaxed environment. there isn't much to do if your not a fisherman but I enjoy it and it's spacious. No electricity and water is spread out. Porta potty and 1 outdoor shower. This Camping for Campers not glampers.
Jul 07, 2023 · Long Island BigfootThis is going to be our fifth time there of many to come I am sure. I personally use my own toilet, I do use shower there and works amazingly well, love the very cold water. There is always room and this is probably one of the most important reasons for us to go back, our schedule doesn't leave much time to plan so it is very last minute let's go camping :)Sometimes you can hear the noise from expwy some others not, it depends. The train for sure, but it is not a big deal 30 seconds of train noise (you should come live next to the subway in the city) that's annoying...The host it is simple and he doesn't bother about a thing; (Could be that we leave the spot in shape always as you all should). We come in a comercial vehicle which some campgrounds don't allow, well here is not a problem folks. So to me ☆☆☆☆☆By the way the lake it is beautiful, can't wait to camp in winter to see it from the spot.
Nov 22, 2022 · Soledad González TorradoI was a little hesitant to stay at this campground based on the reviews, but I've learned over the years that you shouldn't let other's opinions dictate yours. My friend and I stayed at Peconic River Campground last weekend on Saturday night and had a great experience! This was a spontaneous trip for us, so we were happy to find someplace that specialized in walk-ins - they don't take reservations and the campground never fills. We rolled into the campground around 1:00pm and called the number on the sign. The owner told us to set up camp anywhere on their lot and his son would swing by later to collect $40 cash. A little pricey considering the simple accommodations (water hose & pit toilet), but hey, it's Long Island. We set up our hammocks in the wooded section and took a walk down by the Peconic River - beautiful at sunset!Yes, the accommodations are basic. Yes, the upkeep could be better. Yes, there are ticks (welcome to camping folks). However, overall we didn't experience any problems with either the hosts or our campsite. The convince of rolling in last minute and choosing a campsite anywhere on the lot was worth any other inconveniences. So is it a 5 star campground? Probably not. But I do believe it's better than the rating it currently has. I wouldn't hesitate to return!
