Penny Springs Campground

Cascade, ID 83611, USA

4.0
I hate to leave a bad review but this is not a great campground. Sorry for the length, lots of details to share. The road is made of very deep fine dusty dirt and if anyone drives through even at a slow speed it kicks up so much dust!I was the only person at the camp the night I stayed. However there was a steady stream of people driving in during the late evening to use the pit toilets (suppose they were dispersed camping somewhere nearby?)The squirrels were in attack mode the entire time I was there and by the next morning I felt like Bill Murray in Caddyshack... a little crazed and yelling at them to leave me alone! They came in waves and coordinated their attack so one distracted while others tried to go in for anything that wasn’t secure!Double check that EVERYTHING is secured, have a bear canister and hang your bag. Otherwise they will chew through whatever you have! The only reason I didn’t give 1 star is because the hot springs nearby are amazing and mostly make the campground worth it! The last part of the trail down to the springs is pretty steep and in soft dirt! Don’t attempt unless you have good shoes and are pretty agile! Springs were quite hot, but easy to mix in cooler stream water! - Lauri Paulsen

Penny Springs Campground Introduce

For local users searching for "camping near me" in the vicinity of Cascade, Idaho, Penny Springs Campground, located at Cascade, ID 83611, USA, presents a camping option with both notable advantages and potential drawbacks, based on recent customer reviews. Situated close to the river and within walking distance of hot springs, the campground offers a potentially peaceful environment and access to unique natural attractions. However, it's important for prospective visitors to be aware of certain environmental and wildlife considerations highlighted by recent experiences.

The environment of Penny Springs Campground is described by one reviewer as "really peaceful" and close to the river, suggesting a serene setting with the sounds of flowing water. Another camper mentioned the presence of huckleberries, adding to the natural appeal and offering a chance for foraging during the right season. These positive aspects indicate a potentially pleasant outdoor experience with opportunities for relaxation and enjoying the riverside ambiance. However, another review points out a significant environmental factor to consider: the road leading to and within the campground is made of very deep, fine, dusty dirt. This can result in substantial dust clouds being kicked up even by slow-moving vehicles, potentially impacting the air quality and the cleanliness of camping gear. Local users with sensitivities to dust or those planning to visit during dry conditions should be aware of this potential issue.

In terms of services, the available information indicates the presence of a pit toilet and a water source (water pump). These are essential amenities for a basic camping experience. However, one reviewer noted a peculiar situation where a steady stream of people drove into the campground late in the evening seemingly to use the pit toilets, implying that these facilities might be utilized by individuals dispersed camping nearby without their own restroom access. This could potentially lead to increased traffic and usage of the facilities. There is no mention of other common campground services such as trash disposal, fire rings at each site (though one might assume their presence), picnic tables, or any form of hookups for RVs. The limited information suggests a more primitive camping experience focused on basic necessities.

Penny Springs Campground's features include its proximity to some significant natural attractions. Multiple reviewers enthusiastically mention the "amazing" hot springs located nearby, with one stating they are within walking distance and another indicating they are about 1.5 miles north of the campground. The hot springs appear to be a major draw, with one reviewer even suggesting they "mostly make the campground worth it." However, it's important to note the caution about the trail leading down to the springs, which is described as "pretty steep and in soft dirt," requiring good shoes and agility. The springs themselves are reported to be quite hot but offer the possibility of mixing in cooler stream water for a more comfortable temperature. Another notable feature is the good fishing opportunities mentioned by one reviewer, likely in the nearby river. The discovery of huckleberries also adds to the potential for a unique and rewarding camping experience, depending on the time of year.

One significant feature, albeit a less positive one, highlighted in a detailed review is the aggressive behavior of squirrels. The reviewer described an intense and persistent onslaught by squirrels that seemed coordinated in their attempts to access any unsecured food or belongings. This individual likened the experience to the movie "Caddyshack" and strongly advises future campers to take extreme precautions, including securing all items, using a bear canister, and hanging food bags to prevent the squirrels from chewing through them. This suggests that local users planning to camp at Penny Springs should be particularly vigilant about food storage and protecting their gear from wildlife.

Currently, there is no specific promotional information available for Penny Springs Campground in the provided data. Local users interested in camping here should consider the potential benefits of its location near the river and hot springs, as well as the reported drawbacks such as the dusty conditions and the aggressive squirrel population. To inquire about camping fees, availability, or any specific regulations, contacting the campground directly at (208) 373-4100 or +1 208-373-4100 would be advisable. Additionally, checking online camping review platforms or forums might provide more recent insights and tips from other campers who have visited Penny Springs Campground.

In conclusion, Penny Springs Campground near Cascade, Idaho, offers a camping experience with notable natural attractions like nearby hot springs and river access, along with opportunities for fishing and huckleberry picking. However, local users considering this campground should be aware of the potential for very dusty conditions and the reported aggressive behavior of squirrels, necessitating careful food storage and gear protection. While basic amenities like a pit toilet and water pump are available, the overall experience seems to be more rustic. Prospective campers are encouraged to weigh the pros and cons based on the available reviews and contact the campground directly for the most up-to-date information before planning their "camping near me" getaway.
