Pere Marquette Campground Introduce
For local residents in search of "camping near me" in the Grafton, Illinois area, Pere Marquette Campground, situated at 62037, Grafton, IL 62037, USA, offers a state park camping experience with access to a variety of outdoor activities and natural beauty. Based on customer reviews, this campground provides a blend of essential amenities and a connection to the surrounding environment, making it a worthwhile option for those who appreciate a more traditional camping setting.
One reviewer simply stated it's a "Good place to camp," highlighting the availability of "Plenty of outside stuff to do and reasonable rates." This suggests that Pere Marquette Campground is an affordable option for those looking to engage in outdoor recreation. While the specifics of these activities aren't detailed in this brief comment, it sets the stage for a campground with a focus on enjoying the natural surroundings.
Another review provides a bit more detail, characterizing the campground as "a little primitive for some" but also noting that it's "a typical state park type of campground." This suggests that while the amenities might not be luxurious, they are in line with what one might expect from a state-run facility. The reviewer mentions a "Decent shower house" that isn't "fancy at all," indicating that basic hygiene needs are met. For those with RVs, the presence of a "Dump station and community water spigots" is noted, which the reviewer points out makes it "a little bit like boondocking" in terms of water access. Importantly, the review also mentions that "There are electric hookups on the lots," which is a significant convenience for many campers.
The terrain of the campsites is also described, with the reviewer stating that "most of the lots are pretty level." This is a practical consideration for both tent and RV campers, making setup more straightforward. However, another camper who tent camped on the electric side noted that "The sites are all gravel (vs. paved) and many don’t have a flat grass space big enough for a tent." This is valuable information for tent campers, suggesting that while electric hookups are available, finding a perfectly grassy and level spot for a tent might be a challenge on some sites. This reviewer did mention they "lucked out with our site," implying that some sites are better suited for tent camping than others.
A significant advantage of Pere Marquette Campground appears to be its location and accessibility to other park features. The reviewer who tent camped noted that "It’s an easy walk to the lodge, visitor center, and trails." This proximity to key areas of Pere Marquette State Park enhances the camping experience, allowing easy access to park information, potential amenities at the lodge, and the numerous hiking trails the park is known for. The fact that the "Shower house is heated" is also a notable comfort, especially during cooler weather.
Nature enthusiasts will likely appreciate the environment of Pere Marquette Campground. The reviewer who tent camped "Loved that it very birdy, especially in the morning and evening," even listing specific species observed: "Owls, eagles, woodpeckers." This makes the campground an appealing destination for bird watching. However, it's worth noting that this reviewer mentioned, "No camp store and didn’t see anything in the nearest town." This implies that campers should come prepared with all necessary supplies, as on-site or very nearby shopping options may be limited. On a positive note, they did mention that "Wood from the camp host burned good though," suggesting that firewood is available for purchase from the campground.
Based on these reviews, Pere Marquette Campground offers a state park camping experience with reasonable rates and access to outdoor activities, likely including hiking given its proximity to trails. The presence of electric hookups on most level gravel sites is a plus, although tent campers should be aware that grassy, flat areas for tents might be limited on some sites. The availability of a decent, heated shower house and a dump station caters to basic needs. The campground's location within Pere Marquette State Park provides easy access to the lodge, visitor center, and the park's natural attractions, including abundant birdlife.
However, potential campers should be aware that the campground is described as somewhat "primitive" and lacks a camp store, with limited options in the nearest town. Therefore, it's advisable to bring all necessary supplies with you. The availability of firewood from the camp host is a convenience for those planning to have campfires.

Oct 29, 2024 · Corie DavisThe park was hit pretty good after the last storm, but they got it cleaned up well for our 1st camping trip of the season. All the park staff were very nice that we encountered. If they had sewer hook-ups at the stations, it would have been perfect! I think we will be back for sure tho.
Mar 25, 2024 · Heather WScott the campground host does a great job, the campground is very nice with lots of mature trees. I wish that they had water run to each site. You will need to bring extra hose if you intend to fill your tanks while here.
