Phelps Island Campground Introduce
Are you seeking a truly unique "camping near me" experience? Consider Phelps Island Campground, located near Buck Mountain Island, Diamond Point, NY 12824, USA. Unlike traditional campgrounds, Phelps Island offers camping on a small island, providing a distinctive and potentially secluded getaway for local users looking for something different. Access to this campground is primarily by water, adding an adventurous element to your camping trip.
Based on a detailed review from a visitor, Phelps Island, while small, possesses varied terrain and features. The island has a central hill, naturally dividing it into a North and South side, each with its own characteristics. This unique geography contributes to the diverse camping opportunities available on the island.
Environment and Location:
Phelps Island is situated on Lake George, a renowned and beautiful lake in upstate New York. The review highlights that the South side of the island features a flat area particularly well-suited for pitching tents. Throughout the island, there are wooden camping platforms available, providing an elevated base for tents. The reviewer recommends placing a tarp on these platforms before setting up a tent directly on the wood, likely for added protection and comfort.
In contrast, the North side of Phelps Island is described as dropping sharply into the water. This suggests that campsites on the North side might offer more direct waterfront access but could be less suitable for traditional tent setups due to the terrain.
The entire island is surrounded by docks, which is a significant advantage for those interested in kayaking. The reviewer notes that Phelps Island is a great island to kayak around, implying that the shoreline offers interesting features to explore from the water. The proximity of the island to the mainland shore is also mentioned, estimated to be about the length of a football field. Across from a rocky point on the South side of the island, there is a flat area on the shore, indicating a potential landing or access point from the mainland.
Further along the shore, about 200 feet North of this flat area, there is a low cliff. This detail paints a picture of a varied shoreline landscape surrounding Phelps Island. The channel between Phelps Island and the shore is designated as a no-wake zone, likely due to its size and the presence of boat traffic. The reviewer observed large motorboats passing through this channel at least once an hour during the day, which is something to be aware of in terms of noise and water conditions.
On the mainland side, opposite Phelps Island, there is an unmarked trail. The reviewer notes that heading south on this trail eventually leads to private property, suggesting that while there might be opportunities for some onshore exploration, it's important to be mindful of property boundaries.
Services and Amenities:
The review primarily focuses on the natural environment and layout of Phelps Island, with limited information about traditional campground services. The presence of wooden camping platforms can be considered an amenity, providing a more stable and potentially drier base for tents compared to pitching directly on the ground. The docks around the island also serve as an amenity, particularly for those arriving by boat or planning to kayak.
The review does not mention the availability of restrooms, water sources, fire pits, or other common campground amenities. Given that it's an island campground, it's possible that it offers a more primitive camping experience where campers need to be self-sufficient. Local users considering Phelps Island should likely inquire about what facilities, if any, are provided.
Features and Highlights:
- Island Camping: A unique opportunity to camp on an island in Lake George.
- Wooden Tent Platforms: Offers elevated and potentially drier tent sites.
- Kayaking Destination: Docks around the island make it ideal for kayaking exploration.
- Distinct North and South Sides: Provides varied terrain and camping options.

If you are looking for a departure from traditional mainland campgrounds and are comfortable with a potentially more rustic and water-access-oriented experience, Phelps Island could be an excellent choice. The description of the island's layout, with flat tent areas on the South side and the steeper, waterfront North side, indicates a variety of camping environments to suit different preferences.

Phelps Island Campground Reviews
Is a small island but still big enough that it has a hill in the middle with a separate North and South side. The South side especially has a flat area that is ideal for tents. There's wooden camping platforms that you can put a tent on throughout the island. Put a tarp on top of the platforms instead of your tent directly on the wood. The north side drops sharply into the water. There's docks around the entire island which is good since it's a good island to kayak around. The distance from the island to the shore is close to a 🏈 field and there is a flat area on the shore across from the rocky point that sticks out from the South side of the island. There is a low cliff on the shore about 200 feet North of the flat area across from the South side pf the island. The channel between Phelps island and the shore is big enough to be a no wake zone. Large motorboats go through that channel at least once an hour throughout the day. On the shore side there is a trail that is unmarked. If you go south far enough you will come to private property
