Songdog Ranch Introduce
Welcome to Songdog Ranch, a campground nestled in the desert landscape of New Cuyama, California. Located at 680 Ballinger Canyon Rd, New Cuyama, CA 93254, USA, Songdog Ranch offers an opportunity for those searching within the 'Camping Near Me' category to experience the tranquility and beauty of the California desert. While some reviews highlight the natural beauty and hospitality, others raise concerns about the environment.
One reviewer, who found the campground through Hipcamp, described it as "not a bad campground." However, they expressed being "put off by the loud politicizing of the space." This individual mentioned never meeting the owner but noted that others said the owner is nice. Despite this, the presence of "political advertising displayed within view of our site" significantly detracted from their experience of trying to "get away from everything," leading them to state they "won’t be back."
This reviewer later edited their comment to provide further context. They clarified that the prevalence of political signage upon arrival was surprising and, while acknowledging it as the owner's prerogative, stated that it "very much changed our experience at the site." Expressing a desire to tune out politics due to national division, they indicated an intention to stay at places that do the same. While not questioning the owner's potential niceness, they critiqued the "bad judgment polarizing his public business," drawing an analogy to unwelcome political displays at hotels. They offered to revise their review if the signage were removed.
In contrast to these concerns, another reviewer had a more positive experience, focusing on the natural aspects and the hospitality. They described "breathtaking sunsets in the desert" and found the atmosphere to be "peaceful and serene," highly recommending a visit to "relax and unwind." This reviewer also noted "very clean bathrooms" and described the owners as "very friendly" and their dogs as "so sweet."
Based on these mixed reviews, the environment at Songdog Ranch appears to offer both natural beauty and potentially intrusive political displays. The desert setting promises stunning sunsets and a sense of peace and serenity for some visitors. However, the presence of political advertising within the campground is a significant factor that negatively impacted at least one reviewer's experience, contrasting with the desire for a politically neutral escape for some campers.
The services and features of Songdog Ranch can be gleaned from the reviews. The availability through Hipcamp suggests a platform for booking and potentially viewing site details. The mention of "clean bathrooms" indicates that restroom facilities are provided and maintained. The friendly demeanor of the owners and the presence of their dogs suggest a personal touch in the hospitality offered. However, specific amenities such as the availability of water, fire pits, picnic tables, or other common campground features are not explicitly detailed in these reviews.
The features of Songdog Ranch seem to include its location in the desert, offering opportunities for enjoying sunsets and a quiet environment. The cleanliness of the bathrooms is a noted positive aspect. The friendliness of the owners and their pets may contribute to a welcoming atmosphere for some. However, the prominent display of political signage is a unique and potentially divisive feature that significantly affected at least one visitor's perception of the space as a place to escape from societal divisions.
Promotional information is not directly present in the reviews. However, the positive aspects mentioned – breathtaking sunsets, peaceful and serene environment, clean bathrooms, and friendly owners – could be considered indirect promotion. The availability through Hipcamp also serves as a way for potential campers to find and book the location. Conversely, the negative feedback regarding political displays might deter some individuals seeking a neutral and apolitical camping experience.
For local users searching within 'Camping Near Me' who are considering Songdog Ranch, it is essential to weigh the positive comments about the natural beauty, cleanliness, and friendly owners against the negative feedback regarding the political environment. Individuals seeking a politically neutral retreat may want to inquire directly with the owners about the current presence and prominence of political signage before making a booking. Others who are less concerned about such displays may find the desert scenery and hospitality appealing.
To obtain more comprehensive information about the services, amenities, and current environment at Songdog Ranch, interested individuals should contact the owners directly using the provided phone numbers: (805) 266-1314 or +1 805-266-1314. Inquiring about campsite details, available facilities, and the current atmosphere regarding political displays would be prudent before planning a visit. Additionally, checking the Songdog Ranch listing on Hipcamp may provide further details and potentially more reviews from other campers.
In conclusion, Songdog Ranch in New Cuyama, CA, offers a desert camping experience with the potential for breathtaking sunsets and a peaceful atmosphere, along with friendly owners and clean facilities. However, a significant consideration for potential visitors is the reported presence of prominent political signage, which has negatively impacted the experience of at least one reviewer seeking a politically neutral escape. Local users within the 'Camping Near Me' category should carefully consider these mixed perspectives and potentially seek further clarification from the owners to determine if Songdog Ranch aligns with their preferences for a camping getaway.

Songdog Ranch Reviews
Not a bad campground, which we found through hipcamp. But we were put off by the loud politicizing of the space. Never met the owner, and people say he’s nice. But we came here to get away from everything, and found that political advertising was displayed within view of our site. Won’t be back.Jen, since I can’t respond to your response, I’ll edit my review. I stayed with one other person whose name our stay was under. I didn’t include their name because they didn’t want to have to deal with any potential blowback, and they gave a good review on hipcamp because they felt conflicted about it. What I can say is that when we drove in, we were surprised by how prevalent the political signage was. That’s your prerogative. But it very much changed our experience at the site. Given how much politicians have divided the country I am trying to tune out politics, and I intend to stay at places that do the same. I’m not saying the owner might not be a nice person. I am saying he is showing bad judgment polarizing his public business. May our country survive the politicization we’ve been seeing, it’s horrifying. Imagine if every hotel you went to had a flag for one side or the other. If he hears me and decides to take it down I’d be happy to change my review.

Mar 29, 2025 · Natalie FishburnLove this campground! Beautiful rolling hills, views of the valley (which the mountains have cool looking formations), night time is amazing with dark skies lit up with all the stars, the sites at this campground are far apart so that you feel like you’re out there by yourself, not too hot or cold during Spring, speaking of Spring, all the wild flowers were blooming.
Apr 10, 2021 · Peter NorgaardThird time here ⛺️One of the best campsites two hours from Los Angeles.More than ten locations for any company from very small campsites to large ones with houses. There are also many medium options with and without berths. Each location is uniquely decorated in its own way, but all have at least a plumbing, a grill, a table with benches under the roof, trash containers and a toilet. All locations are at a distance, so you will never intersect with neighbors.I prefer campsites on the hill, but campsites at the bottom have their advantages too. great place for sunrises and sunsets. At night you will have a clear starry sky.
Apr 09, 2022 · Dmitriy MykaloThis was THE coolest campsite I have ever been to! It is on top of a mountain and only has a single lane dirt road to the top so just keep that in mind when driving here. Amazing off-roading about 2 miles farther into the mountains. Jim was so sweet and very accommodating. He has soaker tubs that you can rent ($ based on size) to help with the heat ($20 for the single person). There were ZERO mosquitos/spiders/etc. I think I only saw one or two flies my entire stay. Almost every campsite has its own outhouse (non flushable) but clean, private and with toilet paper. Fire pits, table and potable water at each site. I was solo camping and felt very safe! Adorable ranch dogs too! I will ABSOLUTELY be back again!
