The environment of Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area is centered around the picturesque Pinewoods Lake. Reviews indicate that the campground offers direct access to the lake, suggesting opportunities for scenic walks along the paved trail that runs alongside it. The presence of a boat launch site near the day-use area implies that the lake may be suitable for small watercraft, although this is not explicitly confirmed in the provided information. The campground itself is described as "little" but "nice," suggesting a smaller, more intimate setting. The area is noted for its natural beauty, providing a tranquil backdrop for camping. While there is no mention of extensive wooded areas within the campground itself, the general region of Ellsinore, Missouri, is known for its forests and natural landscapes, indicating that the recreation area likely offers a connection to the surrounding wilderness. However, one important environmental factor to be aware of, as highlighted by a reviewer, is the significant presence of ticks. Campers are advised to take precautions, such as avoiding vegetation and conducting thorough tick checks on themselves and their pets.
The services at Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area are geared towards a more basic camping experience, often referred to as primitive or dry camping. Notably, the campground does not offer sewer, water, or electric hookups at the individual campsites. However, it does provide essential amenities for a comfortable stay. There are 15 paved campsites available, each equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring for campfires, and a pole for hanging a lantern, offering a degree of convenience despite the lack of hookups. Restroom facilities are provided in the form of two vault toilets, which are described as clean by a reviewer. It is important to note that showers are not available within the campground itself. However, one reviewer helpfully points out that a truck stop with clean shower facilities is located approximately five minutes away from the recreation area, offering an off-site solution for those needing showers. The campground is pet-friendly, allowing visitors to bring their pets, provided they remain on a leash at all times. It is also a "pack it in and pack it out" facility, meaning there are no dumpsters or a dump site available, and campers are responsible for removing all their trash upon departure. This policy helps maintain the cleanliness and natural state of the area.
The features of Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area emphasize its natural setting and the provision of basic but essential amenities for a comfortable primitive camping experience. The paved campsites offer a stable and clean area for setting up tents or parking smaller RVs that do not require hookups. The inclusion of a picnic table and a fire ring at each site enhances the camping experience, providing dedicated spaces for dining and campfires (subject to any local regulations). The lantern pole is a thoughtful addition for convenient nighttime lighting. The presence of two vault toilets ensures basic sanitation needs are met, and their cleanliness is a notable positive. The paved trail along the lake offers an opportunity for leisurely walks and enjoying the scenic views. The boat launch site suggests potential for water-based activities on Pinewoods Lake, although details about permitted activities and boat types are not provided. The pet-friendly policy allows owners to enjoy the outdoors with their animals. The "pack it in and pack it out" policy promotes environmental responsibility and helps preserve the natural beauty of the area. However, the significant presence of ticks is a notable feature that requires campers to be vigilant and take necessary precautions.

Pinewoods Lake Recreation Area Reviews
Really nice little campground. No sewer, water, or electric but clean and quiet. I will definitely camp here again when in the area. Outhouse type bathrooms which were clean. No showers, but there is a truck stop about 5 minutes away with clean shower facilities. Pet friendly but must remain on leash.
Apr 07, 2024 · Stephen LutherThis is a great site. There are 15 paved sites, each with a picnic table, fire ring and a pole to hang a lantern. There are two vault toilets, one in the campground and the other and the day use/boat launch site. There is a paved trail along the lake. No water, dumpsters or dump site. Pack it in and pack it out.The only negative is there are a LOT of ticks! Luckily they're easy to spot on my white dog but I have to do a tick check EVERY time he goes outside. Avoid the vegetation and you'll see a lot less. Make sure you tick-check yourself.
May 25, 2022 · Life with SpockGreat recreation area. Lake, trail, picnic tables, pavilion (reservations available), campground with ring tables. Non flush bathrooms.Great stop on my way.So pretty and trail around the lake.
Dec 08, 2023 · Sueanne Cmehil-Warn2nd time camping here & it’s really lovely, quiet & safe. Nice walk around the lake, standard vault toilets, dumpster, mostly shaded. Water spigots don’t work. There’s a cool pier & boat launch.Looks like they’ve had to start charging fees now: $15/night, half off with the Senior pass. It’s worth it.
