Plaskett Creek Campground Introduce
For those searching for "Camping Near Me" in the iconic Big Sur region, Plaskett Creek Campground stands out as an "unbelievably beautiful" and highly-regarded destination. Located at 69345 CA-1, Big Sur, CA 93920, USA, this US Forest Service campground offers a prime camping experience within the breathtaking Los Padres National Forest. While it's part of the national forest system, it's distinct from more primitive backcountry sites, providing a balance of natural immersion and convenient amenities. You can contact them at (805) 434-1996 or +1 805-434-1996 for inquiries, though reservations are typically made through Recreation.gov.
Environment and Setting:
Plaskett Creek Campground is set in a picturesque "country park-like setting" nestled among a scattered canopy of large Monterey Pines and Monterey Cypress trees. This provides ample shade throughout the day, creating a cool and inviting atmosphere. The ground is often described as grassy, adding to the pleasant, natural feel of the campsites. The campground is situated at an elevation of about 200 feet, on the east side of Highway 1, offering a sense of seclusion while remaining easily accessible.
A significant environmental highlight is its incredible proximity to the Pacific Ocean. The campground is "just across Highway 1" from Sand Dollar Beach, which is the largest sandy beach in the Big Sur area. This means campers are within "walking distance" – often a quick 5-minute trek – of the beach, where they can hear the "sounds of the ocean all night while we sleep." The "amazing stretch of coastline adjacent to the campground" offers sweeping views and opportunities to experience the rugged beauty of Big Sur. The area is also home to diverse wildlife, including fox, bobcat, deer, and raccoon, though mountain lions and bears are rare within the campground itself. The presence of a small stream to the north of the grove, near the entrance, adds to the natural charm.
The serene environment of Plaskett Creek makes it a "tranquil atmosphere" that invites visitors to "unwind and explore the rich surroundings of Big Sur." Even though some sites might be in a central meadow area with less privacy, the perimeter sites often offer more seclusion and shade.
Services and Features:
Plaskett Creek Campground provides a range of essential and highly appreciated services and features that contribute to its popularity:
Campsites: The campground boasts 44 individual campsites, designed for both tent camping and RVs. Sites are generally "well-maintained" and include a paved parking pad, picnic table, and a fire ring with a pedestal grill. RVs up to 50 feet can be accommodated at some sites, though it's important to check specific site details when reserving. There are also a few first-come, first-served sites (typically two) and three group campsites available by reservation, accommodating up to 40 people and 10 vehicles.
Restrooms: A significant advantage for a Forest Service campground, Plaskett Creek features "flush toilets and sinks in bathrooms," which are consistently praised for being "clean" and "immaculate." This elevated amenity significantly enhances the comfort level for campers.
Water Access: Drinking water is available through "spigots in the campground." While the camp host does not sell bottled drinking water, the availability of potable water on-site is a crucial convenience.
Exceptional Camp Hosts: A standout feature, as overwhelmingly highlighted in reviews, is the presence of "unbelievably kind hosts," specifically Michael and Punky. They are described as the "pinnacle of hospitality," "generous and welcoming," "hilarious and extremely knowledgeable about the surrounding area." They go above and beyond, offering assistance with directions (crucial in an area with limited cell service), providing local attraction recommendations (like Limekiln State Park and the monastery), and even selling essential supplies like firewood and "various first aid supplies" from a dedicated table.
Camp Store/Supplies: While not a full-fledged store, the ability to purchase firewood directly from the camp hosts is highly convenient, especially given the frequent need for fires for cooking and warmth. The availability of basic first-aid supplies is an added benefit for campers.
Pet-Friendly: Plaskett Creek Campground is pet-friendly, allowing dogs to stay as long as they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them, adhering to state and county laws.
Recreational Activities: The campground serves as an excellent base for a multitude of outdoor activities. Direct access to Sand Dollar Beach makes it popular for "surfing, fishing (with required permits for those over 16), swimming, exploring, and sunbathing." "Various hiking trails with sweeping views" lead into the hills, offering opportunities for further exploration. The Willet hiking trail is within walking distance. Visitors can also enjoy fishing for surfperch and rockfish.
Reservations: Given its popularity, reservations are highly recommended, often needing to be made several months in advance through Recreation.gov. The campground is open year-round, but summer is its busiest season. Check-in is at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 12:00 PM. Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and generators are permitted between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
Promotional Information:
Plaskett Creek Campground is promoted as an "absolute gem" for those seeking "Camping Near Me" in Big Sur, especially for those who appreciate both natural beauty and a well-managed, friendly environment. It’s an ideal spot for:
Families: With its amenities, spacious sites, and proximity to the beach, it's a "family-friendly campground" that offers something for all ages.
Surfers and Beach Enthusiasts: Direct access to Sand Dollar Beach makes it a "campers, surfers, spearfishers, and super-relaxers paradise."
Hikers: The abundance of nearby trails with diverse scenery, from coastal views to redwood groves, appeals to avid hikers.
Nature Lovers: The setting among Monterey Pines and proximity to the ocean offers a deep immersion in Big Sur's natural environment.
Those seeking a balanced experience: It strikes a great balance between being in nature and having access to comfortable facilities like flush toilets and potable water, which aren't always guaranteed at Forest Service campgrounds.
The glowing reviews consistently highlight the incredible impact of the camp hosts, Michael and Punky, emphasizing that "it's the people around you who really make a trip outdoors something special." Their local knowledge and willingness to assist (even with navigation issues due to lack of cell service) add immense value to the stay. The campground's strategic location also provides convenient access to other Big Sur attractions, including local towns like Lucia (nearest store), and further south to San Simeon State Park for a dump station. Although cell service can be spotty, this contributes to the disconnect from the digital world and encourages greater appreciation of the surroundings. Plaskett Creek Campground promises not just a place to stay, but a truly welcoming and memorable outdoor experience in one of California's most stunning coastal landscapes.

Plaskett Creek Campground Reviews
An unbelievably beautiful campground with unbelievably kind hosts! Michael and Punky do a wonderful job at running the campground, making sure everyone passing through enjoys their time there. Both of them are hilarious and extremely knowledgeable about the surrounding area. In our case, we had trouble figuring out a path back to the 101 due to the lack of cell service; not only did Michael show us a nearby road that had reopened recently, saving us a bunch of time -- he told us exactly how to safely navigate it and even pitched a couple great attractions along the way (check out Limekiln State Park!). They also have a table stocked with firewood and various first aid supplies which you can purchase from them during the day if you've forgotten anything at home. Be sure to go to them if you need help with anything!Of course, the stretch of coastline adjacent to the campground is amazing. There are various hiking trails with sweeping views, trails that lead into the hills, day-use areas for picnics, pebbly beaches that are perfect for a day in the water. With so much to do, there's certainly never a reason to be bored if you're staying at Plaskett Creek. But as always, it's the people around you who really make a trip outdoors something special. Thank you to our excellent hosts, we can't wait to come back!
Apr 08, 2025 · Max HaberYou will not find camp hosts more generous and welcoming than Michael and Punky. These folks are the pinnacle of hospitality, ready to help however they can. The real effing deal. Not a bad site in the campground. Well-maintained facilities and proximity to several cool locations (ask Michael about Limekiln and the monastery) make Plaskett Creek an absolute gem.
Apr 01, 2025 · Donny BruBiked up to this site and we were so welcomed and well taken care of by Michael. It was like sleeping in a green fairy meadow. There were lilies at the entrance and clean flush toilets. The campground is open and everyone is mostly in site of each other in this big loop which I liked and made me feel secure. I would highly recommend. On the way back we were trying to find out the bus schedule and Michael searched it for us, cutting our ride mileage in half, saved the day!
Feb 19, 2025 · Mari StusserMichael was simply amazing! We had landed here after a long drive and a hard hike hoping for a spot. Michael showed us a spot where we could camp for the night and gave us couple of ideas on things to do around! Very resourceful! The campground is really nice - and the location is amazing!
Apr 25, 2025 · Meena SundarPunky and Michael are the most spectacular and accommodating camp hosts this side of the Mississippi!!!!! We lobe them so much and we love this campground. They do a great job keeping all the restrooms and grounds clean but most importantly bring good vibes and story telling. Definitely camp with them asap!
