Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 Introduce
For local residents in the Appling, Georgia, area and particularly for military personnel, veterans, and their families searching for "camping near me," Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2, located at 4398-4350 Trout Dr, Appling, GA 30802, USA, offers a promising lakeside camping experience. Based on the available reviews, Pointes West Army Resort is generally well-regarded as "one of the best campgrounds around," known for its lakefront sites and full hook-up availability. However, it is currently undergoing recovery efforts due to damage from Hurricane Helene. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of the campground's environment, services, features, and current status based on the provided information.
The environment of Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 is consistently described as lakeside, with reviewers noting "Lake side everywhere" and the overall enjoyment of the location during previous visits. This suggests that the campground offers scenic views of a lake, likely providing opportunities for water-related activities such as fishing, boating, and enjoying the natural beauty of the waterfront. The presence of mature trees, as indicated by the shade mentioned in reviews of other parts of Pointes West, likely extends to Camping Area 2, offering a comfortable and shaded camping environment. The general sentiment of enjoying time spent at Pointes West underscores the natural appeal of the location as a relaxing outdoor retreat.
In terms of services and features, one significant aspect highlighted in a review is the availability of "Full hookups." This is a crucial amenity for RV campers, typically including connections for electricity, water, and sewage at each campsite. The presence of full hookups indicates that Camping Area 2 is well-equipped to accommodate recreational vehicles, making it an attractive option for those traveling with RVs and seeking the convenience of these services. While a permanent bathroom facility was reported as "out of service" in one review, a temporary "portable John" was available for use. This suggests that while there might be ongoing infrastructure challenges due to the hurricane damage, efforts are being made to provide basic sanitation facilities. The mention of work being done to "re open" the campground implies that repairs and improvements are underway to restore full services.
A key feature of Pointes West Army Resort, as indicated by its name and a review of another area within Pointes West, is its affiliation with the military community. It is described as "a nice place for military and veterans to spend time together," with "Proper ID required" for access or certain privileges. While this specific review refers to "Points West" generally, it is reasonable to assume that Camping Area 2 also shares this welcoming environment for military personnel, veterans, and their families. This focus on the military community creates a unique and supportive atmosphere that might be particularly appealing to those with a military background.
Currently, Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 is in a state of recovery following damage from Hurricane Helene. One reviewer noted the "mess and many down camp sites" resulting from the hurricane. This indicates that the campground was significantly impacted and is currently undergoing restoration. However, the same review also expresses optimism about the reopening, stating, "It is amazing the work being put in to re open one of the best campgrounds around." This suggests that dedicated efforts are underway to repair the damage and restore the campground to its previous high standards. The anticipated reopening is mentioned as "hopefully in December," although the specific year is not provided (based on the current date of May 7, 2025, this likely refers to December 2025, assuming the review is relatively recent). Local users should be aware of the current closure and the anticipated reopening timeframe.
Another issue mentioned in a review is the overgrown and unkept grass around the campsites. This suggests that grounds maintenance might have been affected by the hurricane or is part of the ongoing recovery process. Potential visitors should be prepared for the possibility of such conditions upon reopening, although it is likely that these issues will be addressed as part of the restoration efforts. The fact that a permanent bathroom was out of service also indicates potential disruptions to typical amenities during the recovery phase.
Considering the "camping near me" category, Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 holds significant potential as a premier lakeside camping destination in the Appling, GA, area, particularly for the military community. Its full hookup availability is a major draw for RVers, and the lakefront setting offers a beautiful and recreational environment. While currently impacted by hurricane damage, the ongoing efforts to reopen and the positive past reviews suggest that it will once again be a highly desirable location. Local users, especially those affiliated with the military, should monitor updates regarding the reopening in December. Once fully operational, it promises a rewarding camping experience with excellent amenities and a welcoming atmosphere.
Promotional information is somewhat limited due to the current closure. However, the strong positive sentiment in past reviews, the reputation as "one of the best campgrounds around," the lakeside location, and the availability of full hookups all serve as inherent promotions for Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2. The anticipation of its reopening, as expressed by a returning visitor, further highlights its appeal. For local users and the military community, the promise of a restored and excellent lakeside camping experience with full amenities is a significant incentive to plan future trips to Camping Area 2 once it reopens.
In conclusion, Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 near Appling, GA, offers a highly regarded lakeside camping experience with full hookups, particularly welcoming to military personnel and veterans. While currently undergoing recovery from Hurricane Helene, with an anticipated reopening in December, its past reputation and the ongoing restoration efforts suggest a promising future. Pointes West Army Resort - Camping Area 2 Reviews
Always enjoy going to Pointes West, however this time the damage from hurricane Helene has made for a mess and many down camp sites. Grass around campsites should be taken care of as it is overgrown and unkept. Bathroom was out of service, however there was a portable John located outside to be used.
