Post Pile Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a tranquil and scenic "camping near me" experience near Prineville, Oregon, Post Pile Campground offers a promising retreat. Described by visitors as a "beautiful serene place" with "beautiful views" and "easy access to river," this campground appears to prioritize natural beauty and a peaceful atmosphere for those looking to unwind and connect with the outdoors. While specific details about the campground's amenities are limited in the provided reviews, the emphasis on its serene environment and riverside location suggests a focus on a more natural and less developed camping experience.
Post Pile Campground's allure lies in its picturesque setting and direct access to the river, making it an attractive option for those who enjoy riverside camping and the associated activities. The mention of "serene" suggests a quiet and calming environment, ideal for escaping the stresses of daily life. The beautiful views further enhance the appeal, promising a visually rewarding camping experience.
Environment: Riverside Beauty and Tranquility
The key environmental features of Post Pile Campground are its "beautiful serene place" atmosphere, the "beautiful views" it offers, and its "easy access to river." The specific type of river is not mentioned, but riverside camping often provides opportunities for fishing, wading, and enjoying the sights and sounds of flowing water. The serenity of the location suggests a relatively quiet and undisturbed natural setting, potentially away from significant noise or crowds. The beautiful views imply scenic landscapes, which could include surrounding vegetation, geological formations, or the river itself.
The lack of mention of specific vegetation or terrain makes it difficult to paint a detailed picture of the environment. However, the overall impression is one of natural beauty and tranquility, making it an appealing destination for those seeking a peaceful outdoor experience close to the water.
Services and Amenities: Basic Natural Camping
The limited information from the reviews suggests that Post Pile Campground offers very basic amenities, focusing on the natural setting rather than extensive facilities. The most crucial piece of information regarding services is the explicit statement that "There is no drinking water here." This is a critical consideration for anyone planning to camp at Post Pile Campground, as they will need to bring their own potable water supply.
The review does mention that drinking water can be obtained from Chimney Rock Campground, which is located a "short drive away." This indicates a potential nearby resource, but campers at Post Pile will need to factor in the travel to Chimney Rock for water needs. The absence of any mention of other amenities like restrooms, fire rings, picnic tables, or trash disposal suggests that these may be limited or non-existent at Post Pile Campground. Campers should be prepared for a more primitive camping experience and plan accordingly.
Features: Riverside Access and Scenic Serenity
The primary features of Post Pile Campground that are highlighted in the reviews are:
- Easy Access to River: This is a significant draw for those who enjoy water-related activities such as fishing, wading, or simply relaxing by the riverbank. Easy access enhances the enjoyment and convenience of a riverside camping experience.
- Beautiful Views: The scenic vistas offered by the campground contribute to a more enjoyable and visually rewarding stay. The nature of these views is not specified but likely encompasses the river and the surrounding landscape.
- Serene Atmosphere: The tranquility of the location provides a peaceful escape from the noise and activity of more developed areas, making it ideal for those seeking relaxation and a connection with nature.
These features suggest that Post Pile Campground is best suited for campers who prioritize a natural and quiet environment with direct river access over extensive amenities.
Important Considerations for Your Visit
Local users considering camping at Post Pile Campground should be particularly aware of the following:
- No Drinking Water: This is a critical factor. Campers must bring an adequate supply of drinking water for the duration of their stay. Relying on a nearby campground for water requires planning and transportation.
- Limited Amenities: The lack of mention of other facilities suggests that campers should be prepared for a more primitive experience. This likely means bringing all necessary camping gear, including water containers, cooking equipment, lighting, and possibly portable toilet facilities if restrooms are not available. Inquire locally for a comprehensive list of available amenities before your trip.
- Proximity to Chimney Rock Campground: While Chimney Rock offers a water source, be aware of its location and accessibility from Post Pile Campground. Factor in travel time if you plan to utilize this resource. It might be prudent to contact Chimney Rock Campground to confirm water availability for visitors of other campgrounds.
- Riverside Camping Considerations: When camping near a river, be aware of potential hazards such as changing water levels, strong currents, and insects. Take necessary precautions to ensure safety and comfort.
- Leave No Trace Principles: Given the likely lack of extensive facilities, it is crucial for campers to adhere strictly to Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and minimizing their impact on the environment.
- First-Come-First-Served: Like many smaller, less developed campgrounds, Post Pile might operate on a first-come-first-served basis. Arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak seasons, may be necessary to secure a campsite. Information on reservations is not provided.
- Potential for Limited Cell Service: The serene and potentially remote nature of the campground might also mean limited or no cell phone service. Plan accordingly for communication and emergencies.

Post Pile Campground Reviews
This is a beautiful serene place. There is no drinking water here, but you can get that from Chimney Rock campground a short drive away
Sep 05, 2020 · Chris RiehlBeautiful views. Easy access to river. Loved it!
Jul 20, 2020 · SodapopWent fishing here, didn’t catch anything but it was still nice.I never went in the bathroom, but according to a friend who was there with me, there were cicada wings on the ground. (I just thought that was interesting
Jun 25, 2022 · Gina PutzoluBeautiful, clean, quiet& peaceful. Many campgrounds along this windy valley road. We're in a 33 foot motorhome and no problems manuevering or finding an empty site. There are restrooms however bring anything you need, this area is completely unattended during the shutdown, cell service and network availability is extremely spotty. For camp fire though youre in the woods, county does patrol occasionaly and even picking up wood thats down is prohibited. Fly fishing maybe get you something other than snags and lost lures but as i dont fly fish, thats all ive received. Roads are NOT MAINTAINED at this time and are extremely dangerous when freezing, also watch for rocks that slide onto road abd occasional deer. The campsites are all close to the road as it runs parallel with the river. This site is 18 miles from Prineville, and thats the closest store of any kind. Due to the corners its a good half hour or better drive in the current conditions, and my right foot is lead if thats any indication.
Jan 19, 2019 · Virginia Rose CarterThis is a Great campground your close to the water and it’s small but lots of room for each site, From what I can tell and how it’s layout is it seems it’s meanly for tents and small RVs/trailers. There are many and I mean many campgrounds along this Road there’s a spot for everyone! :)
