Poison Butte Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a picturesque "camping near me" experience along the scenic Crooked River in Oregon, Poison Butte Campground offers an appealing option. Situated near Prineville, this campground is particularly noted for its beautiful natural setting, excellent fishing opportunities, and suitability for tent camping. While the number of campsites is limited and operates on a first-come-first-served basis, the allure of the location and the quality of the facilities make it a sought-after destination for those looking to connect with nature close to home.
Poison Butte Campground is positioned as a gateway to enjoying the recreational opportunities offered by the Crooked River and its surrounding environment. Its reputation as a "beautiful place to fish and enjoy nature" highlights its primary draws. The campground seems to cater primarily to tent campers, although the possibility of accommodating small RVs or trailers cannot be entirely ruled out without further information.
Environment: Riverside Beauty and Natural Serenity
The defining environmental feature of Poison Butte Campground is its location "on the Crooked River." This riverside setting offers numerous benefits, including scenic views, the soothing sounds of flowing water, and direct access for fishing and potentially other water-related activities, although swimming or boating are not explicitly mentioned in the reviews. The beauty of the area is a recurring theme, suggesting a tranquil and visually appealing natural landscape. The suitability for enjoying nature implies the presence of surrounding vegetation, possibly trees providing shade, and opportunities for observing local wildlife.
One reviewer specifically mentioned that "The camp spots looked nice for tent camping," indicating that the individual campsites are well-situated and conducive to a comfortable tent camping experience. This might include relatively level ground, perhaps some natural barriers for privacy, and proximity to the river or other scenic elements. The altitude is not mentioned, but being located along a river in central Oregon, it likely experiences typical high desert climate patterns with warm days and cooler nights, especially during the shoulder seasons.
Services and Amenities: Clean and Basic Facilities
Based on the available reviews, Poison Butte Campground offers essential and well-maintained basic amenities:
- Vault Toilets: One reviewer specifically noted that the "Vault toilets were clean." This is an important aspect of any campground, and positive feedback regarding cleanliness contributes significantly to a positive camping experience.
- Garbage/Recycling Area: The presence of a "garbage/recycling area" indicates that the campground promotes responsible waste management, helping to keep the environment clean and appealing for all visitors. The fact that this area was also noted as "clean" suggests good maintenance practices.
The reviews do not mention the availability of other common campground amenities such as potable water sources, fire rings or picnic tables at individual campsites, or RV hookups. The focus seems to be on providing a natural setting with clean and functional basic facilities for tent campers and those primarily interested in fishing and enjoying the river.
Features: Fishing and Riverside Camping
The primary features of Poison Butte Campground that make it attractive to local users are:
- Excellent Fishing on the Crooked River: The campground's location directly on the Crooked River is a major draw, particularly for anglers. The review mentioning it as a "beautiful place to fish" underscores this. The Crooked River is known for its trout fishing, and staying at Poison Butte Campground provides convenient access to prime fishing spots.
- Scenic Riverside Tent Camping: The positive comment about the "nice" tent camping spots suggests that the campground is well-suited for those who prefer tent camping and want to be close to the river. The natural beauty of the area enhances this experience.
- Clean Basic Facilities: The provision of clean vault toilets and a well-maintained garbage/recycling area ensures a more comfortable and environmentally responsible camping experience compared to campgrounds with neglected facilities.
While the limited number of campsites and the first-come-first-served policy might be considered drawbacks in terms of securing a spot, the quality of the location and basic amenities are definite features for those who do manage to get a site.
Important Considerations for Your Visit
Local users considering a camping trip to Poison Butte Campground should be aware of the following:
- Limited Number of Campsites: The review explicitly states that there are "not many campsites in this campground." This small size contributes to the intimate atmosphere but also means that availability can be scarce.
- First-Come-First-Served: Campsites are allocated on a "first come first serve so hard to get a spot" basis. This policy requires arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak seasons, to have a chance of securing a campsite. There is no indication of an online reservation system.
- Focus on Tent Camping: While not explicitly stated as exclusively for tents, the positive comments about tent camping spots and the lack of mention of RV amenities suggest that the campground is primarily geared towards tent campers. RVs or trailers might be accommodated if space allows, but hookups are unlikely.
- Water Availability: The reviews do not mention the availability of potable water. Campers should be prepared to bring their own water for drinking, cooking, and washing.
- Fire Regulations: Information regarding fire pits or campfire regulations is not provided in the reviews. It is essential to check current fire restrictions in the area before planning to have a campfire and to use designated fire rings if available.
- Potential Crowding: While the campground itself has few sites, its popularity due to the fishing and scenic location might lead to crowding in the area, particularly along the river access points.
- Respect Local Sentiments: One of the reviewers expressed frustration about out-of-state visitors during a specific time. While this sentiment is subjective and context-dependent, local users should be mindful of community feelings and always practice respectful and responsible tourism.

Poison Butte Campground Reviews
Beautiful place to fish and enjoy nature. The camp spots looked nice for tent camping. Vault toilets were clean as well as the garbage/recycling area.
May 10, 2024 · S. SmithNice spot on the Crooked River but not many campsites in this campground. First come first serve so hard to get a spot. Every campground was full but unfortunately most of the people were from out of state and shouldn't be here now. If you're not from Oregon please dont camp here
