Palisades Campground Introduce
For local residents seeking a peaceful and conveniently located "camping near me" experience, Palisades Campground near Prineville, Oregon, offers a tranquil retreat. Described as a "quiet little spot not too far away from home to get away," this campground provides a relaxed atmosphere with access to the water for various recreational activities. The spaciousness of the campsites and the scenic beauty of the area, likened to "Miniature Grand Canyon Vibes," make it an appealing destination for those looking to unwind in nature without traveling too far.
Palisades Campground appears to be particularly attractive for those who enjoy water-based activities such as kayaking and swimming, as well as the unique experience of "mud bugging." The gentle flow of the water is highlighted as a positive feature for swimming, suggesting a safe and enjoyable environment for aquatic recreation. The overall ambiance is described as "beautiful and laid back," promising a relaxing camping experience amidst natural beauty.
Environment: Scenic River Setting with Spacious Campsites
The environment of Palisades Campground is characterized by its scenic beauty, which evokes the feeling of a "Miniature Grand Canyon." This suggests the presence of interesting geological formations, possibly cliffs or steep banks along the river, contributing to a visually striking landscape. The campground's proximity to the water provides easy access for various activities and likely enhances the overall natural appeal. The fact that the water wasn't too swift is a significant environmental detail, making it suitable and safe for swimming.
The campsites themselves are noted for being "far enough apart that it didn't feel crowded," even during a Thursday-Sunday stay. This spaciousness contributes to the quiet and laid-back atmosphere, allowing campers to enjoy a sense of privacy and tranquility. The environment seems to strike a balance between natural immersion and a comfortable camping experience without feeling overly dense or populated.
Services and Amenities: Basic Comforts with Room for Improvement
Based on the limited information in the reviews, Palisades Campground offers basic amenities, with some aspects receiving mixed feedback:
- Water Access: The campground provides direct access to the water, which is a primary feature for activities like kayaking, swimming, and mud bugging. The gentle current is a notable positive aspect for swimming.
- Bathroom Facilities: The review mentions that the "Bathroom was decent when we got there but not so pleasant or clean when we left." This suggests the presence of some form of restroom facility, likely a vault toilet given the context of less developed campgrounds. However, the cleanliness appears to be an issue that can deteriorate over time during a stay.
The reviews do not mention other common campground amenities such as drinking water sources, fire rings, picnic tables at individual campsites, trash disposal, or RV hookups. The focus seems to be on the natural setting and water access, with basic sanitation facilities provided but potentially requiring more consistent maintenance.
Features: Water Recreation, Spaciousness, and Scenic Beauty
The key features of Palisades Campground that make it appealing to local users are:
- Access to Water Activities: The campground's prime location with access to a river suitable for kayaking, swimming (due to the gentle current), and mud bugging offers a range of recreational opportunities for water enthusiasts.
- Spacious Campsites: The generous spacing between campsites enhances privacy and contributes to a less crowded and more peaceful camping experience.
- Scenic Beauty ("Miniature Grand Canyon Vibes"): The unique geological landscape provides a visually stunning backdrop for camping and outdoor activities, offering a memorable and picturesque setting.
- Quiet and Laid-Back Atmosphere: The overall ambiance of the campground is described as quiet and laid-back, making it an ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and a break from more bustling environments.
- Proximity to Home: The reviewer's comment about it being "not too far away from home to get away" highlights its convenience for local residents looking for a quick and easy escape into nature.
These features combine to create a campground that prioritizes a natural and relaxed experience with a focus on river-based recreation.
Important Considerations for Your Visit
Local users planning a camping trip to Palisades Campground should be aware of the following:
- Bathroom Cleanliness: The fluctuating cleanliness of the bathroom facilities is a concern. Campers should be prepared for potentially less than ideal conditions, especially towards the end of their stay or during peak usage times. Bringing personal sanitation supplies might be advisable.
- Cell Service Limitations: The review notes that "US Cellular had no service but an occasional message would go in or out if you were walking around." This indicates very limited or unreliable cell phone service, which is important to consider for communication and emergencies.
- Lack of Mentioned Amenities: The absence of comments on drinking water, fire rings, picnic tables, and trash disposal suggests that these amenities might not be readily available at each campsite or within the campground. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient in these areas, bringing their own water, cooking equipment, and a plan for managing their trash (pack it out if necessary). Inquire locally for a comprehensive list of available amenities before your trip.
- First-Come-First-Served: The reviews do not mention reservations, implying that campsites are likely available on a first-come-first-served basis. Arriving early, especially on weekends or during peak seasons, may be necessary to secure a good spot.
- Mud Bugging: This activity is mentioned as a feature. Local users familiar with this might know what to expect, but those unfamiliar might want to inquire about what it entails and if any specific gear or precautions are needed.
- River Safety: While the water is described as not too swift for swimming, it's always important to exercise caution when around rivers. Be aware of potential hazards like slippery rocks, varying depths, and changes in current, especially if engaging in kayaking or swimming.

Apr 04, 2025 · Jabin MaddoxNice spot along Crooked River. Most people seemed to be there for day use. Early June there was almost nobody else around. Mid July was much busier but by no means crowded.
Jul 12, 2022 · Scooter McHooterGreat campground o n the Crooked River but far too many people from out of state that shouldn't be there now with Covid 19. If you're not local please stay in your own state and help protect our own people ber.
